A Windy Balloon carrying a Blue Slime.

The Windy Balloon is a unique pre-Hardmode flying enemy that only spawns during the Windy Day event in daytime. It carries a slime which is bound to the string underneath. The balloon will pop if the player hits it or gets too close, or if it reaches the ground or comes in contact with a liquid, causing the slime to fall to the ground. The Windy Balloon itself does not deal damage, whereas the slime attached to it does, both while flying and after the balloon is popped.

The Windy Balloon does not drop any items when popped. Its loot can only be obtained by defeating the slime, which may drop one of the Windy Balloon's unique items along with its regular loot.

There are 7 differently colored variants of the Windy Balloon, all of which behave identically.

Notes

  • The following slimes can spawn attached to Windy Balloons:[1]
Slime Chance
Blue Slime Blue Slime 179/300 (59.67%)
Green Slime Green Slime 179/600 (29.83%)
Purple Slime Purple Slime 179/1800 (9.94%)
Pinky Pinky 1/180 (0.56%)
  • Like the Angry Dandelion, Windy Balloons can only spawn upwind of the player.
  • Windy Balloons' movement always follows the direction of the wind.
  • The unique loot of the Windy Balloon can be seen inside the slime's body, similar to bonus drops. Slimes that spawn attached to a Windy Balloon can never carry a regular bonus drop.
  • The Windy Balloon has no banner and kill count; popping it does not cause the Tally Counter to change. Killing the slime it carries only progresses the banner and kill count for said slime itself.
    • However, popping the Windy Balloon is required in order to progress the Bestiary's information, as the Bestiary uses a separate kill counter.
  • If the player kills the slime tied to the Windy Balloon, the balloon will proceed to rapidly zip upwards and out of view. If followed, it will keep on flying up into Space and disappear outside the screen once the player reaches the edge of the world.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Windy Balloon: "Some enterprising slimes ride wind currents with balloons in an effort to find food. Pop their balloons to bring them back down to earth. "
