This article is about the critter. For other uses, see Worm (disambiguation).

The Worm is a critter that spawns in the Underground layer at any time, or on the surface while it is raining. It also has a chance to spawn when grass plants or certain ambient dirt or stone piles are destroyed, jumping out of the destroyed object. Worms are always replaced by Maggots(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) in Graveyard biomes.

The Worm has only 5 health and no defense, and can be damaged by other enemies and players.

The Worm can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture (Worm Cage). Once crafted, the Worm cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

The Worm can be used as bait for fishing, with 25% bait power.

The Worm can be spawned by the Worm Statue, however statue-spawned critters cannot be caught with any Bug Net, and will disappear in a puff of smoke when the player attempts to do so.

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, there is a 1/400 (0.25%) chance for a Gold Worm to spawn in place of an ordinary one.

Worms can be obtained directly in item form by opening a Can Of Worms.

Large piles
  • The chance for a Worm to spawn per destroyed tile is 1/400 (0.25%) when destroying short grass plants or Mushrooms, 1/200 (0.5%) when destroying tall grass plants, and 1/6 (16.67%) when destroying certain other ambient objects. It can only spawn if there are no more than 4 other Worms currently nearby.[1]
    • Only grass plants on regular, pure grass qualify. Worms cannot spawn from grass plants or Mushrooms growing on other types of grass, like Hallowed grass.

Tips

  • Worms will become stuck in 1-tile holes in the ground, which can allow for easy collection during rain. However, this only works if both blocks adjacent to the hole are full blocks (and not sloped).
  • When intending to sell Worms or use them for fishing, it may be worth upgrading them into Enchanted Nightcrawlers(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) first. These have 10% more bait power and sell for 15 SC more, and require only Fallen Stars, a relatively common crafting material.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Worm: "A slick, tubular invertebrate found hiding in rocks, dirt, and grass. Loves the rain. Fish are especially attracted to these."

History

  • Desktop 1.2.4: Can now be used as Bait. Worms now spawn when breaking rock and dirt piles.
