Desert Key drop conditions
I haven't been able to find a Desert Key in 1.4 when creating an artificial desert biome by placing more than 1000 sand blocks (surface background changes, water turns yellow). I've been able to get all of the other biome keys through artificial biomes, and I'm thinking that the Desert Key might also additionally require the player to also be standing behind an Underground Desert wall. Can anyone confirm whether this is the case by looking through the source code? Shockbound (talk) 00:45, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- I checked it. Here's my findings: The key requires a total of 1500 "sand tiles" within the scan area around the player, and that you not be at the beach. There are no specific underground or wall requirements. "Sand tiles" are any of the following: - Fistsh (talk) 09:18, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- Sand Block / Ebonsand Block / Crimsand Block / Pearlsand Block
- Sandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / Ebonsandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / Crimsandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / Pearlsandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Hardened Sand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / Hardened Ebonsand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / Hardened Crimsand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / Hardened Pearlsand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Thanks, this is good to know. It might also be worth checking to see if other biome key drops require conditions that are different from the minimum biome existence requirements, seeing as many of those requirements changed in 1.4. Once that's confirmed, we can update the page to contain this information along with the Desert Key discrepancy. Shockbound (talk) 20:05, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- As follows,
- Frozen Key requires 1500 "snow tiles" (Snow Block, Snow Brick, Ice Block, Thin Ice, Pink Ice Block, Purple Ice Block, Red Ice Block)
- Corruption Key requires 300 "corruption tiles"[1] (Corrupt grass, corruption plants, Ebonstone Block, Corruption Thorny Bush, Ebonsand Block, Purple Ice Block, Ebonsandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Hardened Ebonsand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions))
- Crimson Key requires 300 "crimson tiles"[1][2] (Crimson grass, Crimstone Block, Red Ice Block, Crimsandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Hardened Crimsand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Crimsand Block, Crimson Thorny Bush(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions))
- Hallowed Key requires 125 "hallow tiles" (Hallowed grass, hallowed plants, Pearlstone Block, Pearlsand Block, Pink Ice Block, Hardened Pearlsand Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Pearlsandstone Block(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions))
- Jungle Key requires 140 "jungle tiles" (Jungle grass, jungle plants [including Jungle Spores and Nature's Gift], Jungle vines, Hive, Lihzahrd Brick) and that you not be in the Underworld layer
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Sunflowers count as -10 (negative ten) towards these counts.
- ↑ Crimson plants (other than the Crimson Thorny Bush(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)) are not counted towards this count.
- Again, no wall or surface/underground/etc/ layer checks are performed (except for the one listed above for the Jungle Key). - Fistsh (talk) 21:09, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- ETA: These are all the normal biome requirements. - Fistsh (talk) 21:12, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- What's the exact size of the "scan area"? Is it the same size as the area used for biome existence requirements? 1024 with bad English (talk) 03:06, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
Drop chances
Is it just me, or does a particular world seem to have a higher chance to spawn a certain key? I've gotten three Frozen keys in the course of a couple days, not even trying. However, I've gone to the underground Crimson for hours killing the enemies and have participated in four solar eclipses in above ground crimson and yet I have not gotten a single Crimson key. Same goes for jungle, as I've been to the jungle several times for extended periods and yet have not gotten it's key. Madax17 (talk • email • contribs) 23:30, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Pre-Plantera drop confirmed
Confirmed in 1.3 that Biome Keys can spawn in pre-Plantera hard mode. Just had a Hallowed Key spawn from a Light Mummy or Pixie and I haven't even seen a Plantera bulb this game. --Actreal (talk) 14:25, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Pre-Plantera key drops
The article's text is a bit unclear - are pre-plantera key drops permanently unable to open the biome chests, or just until plantera is defeated? (Mew4ever23 (talk) 15:55, 17 July 2015 (UTC))
- Added a little clarification. I'm pretty sure any key that's brought to a pre-Plantera world will have the tooltip, though, so it doesn't matter when they drop exactly. Cainamar (talk) 22:14, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- Confirmation - Just took plantera down in my world, and both of my hallowed key drops tooltips have switched to "Opens hallowed chest in the dungeon." Mew4ever23 (talk) 14:53, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Fix of drop chances
Someone changed the percentage to 100%, can someone fix this? I can't because, well, I don't know the percent. 162.228.144.177 19:27, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
Key molds
Because it does not say, can the molds be dropped by statue spawned mobs?

- Read the article. No they cannot. Uygfjmhgvh (talk) 12:59, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- In the second paragraph: "Keys cannot be dropped by Meteor Heads, enemies spawned by a statue, Critters, or any enemy spawned by a pillar in the Lunar Events(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)." – Ferretwings (talk) 18:56, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
