Suffocation

Suffocation is a debuff that is inflicted when the player is submerged in falling Sand, Silt, or Slush, causing them to lose 20 health per second for as long as they are submerged. Drowning will not inflict this debuff. Red damage numbers bounce like other debuffs that inflict continuous damage.

Effects of suffocation (the 5 damage ticks after impact).

Notes

  • Suffocation will only be caused by the blocks listed above; other blocks, such as Obsidian that forms over a player, will be completely harmless.
    • Suffocation can occur if any part of the player is trapped by a block.
  • If the player is playing in the secret world seed "for the worthy", ash has a chance of collapsing when hit as if affected by gravity. However, the player will not gain the Suffocation debuff from being trapped in it.

Trivia

  • The Suffocation debuff icon features a blue face, which is a common symptom of asphyxiation.
    • It also shows two open palms crossed over the throat, which is the universal sign of choking.
  • Dying from suffocation will display one of the following unique death messages:
    • "<Player name> couldn't breathe."
    • "<Player name> was buried alive."

History

  • Desktop 1.2.3: Running underwater no longer causes flashes of the Suffocation debuff.
