It seems like something causes the fireflies to spawn like mad on certain nights. Like a dozen on screen that would respawn the instant I left the screen and came back. I'm currently getting a massive swarm during a waning crescent moon. It it's not the moon cycle it might be a random event like a blood moon. Trust me. It's not like falling stars where it seems like there's more some nights and I'm imagining the increased numbers. This is a screen full of them constantly for a single night. I brought this to an admin who can read the code (link). According to him, "the spawn chance is random for each night, so some nights the spawn chance is very high, while other nights the spawn chance is very low. (Same for Butterflies actually.) Yes it does. So I wasn't imagining it that they were spawning much more often some nights than others. Interesting that it's not set by anything but random chance though. --71.55.154.25 19:15, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

I can't read the code, but it seems to me like spawn rates significantly increase after defeating a boss. Multiple times I have summoned night bosses (Eye of Cthulhu, The Twins) and found fireflies and lightning bugs to spawn rapidly for the remainder of the night.
