The step stool does a few distinct things.

• Moving players can reach platforms 1 block higher than their jump.
• Stationary players can mine blocks 2 blocks higher, while still being able to mine blocks underneath the step stool.
• Stationary players can jump exactly 3 blocks higher.

It is the combination of the first and third point that enables new players to use the step stool to reach platforms 10 blocks high. While a player can normally access 7 block ledges, a player with a Step Stool cannot access an 11 block ledge.

With the Step Stool, platforms can be built 7 blocks above existing platforms in arenas such that a constantly moving player with no other mobility accessories can easily move between levels. When using the Step Stool to get onto platforms normally just out of reach, the player is suddenly displaced upward onto the platform.

I agree with Eve89. If you release the key "UP" before you reach peak of the jump, the player will not reach platforms 10 blocks high (or 7 with moving). So the height of the jump is exactly 9 blocks (or 6 with moving).

Interesting thing (may be bug): You cannot reach the platform 10 (7) blocks high, if there is another platform on the first platform (platforms 10 and 11 blocks high, for example).
