As of 1.0.2, Demonite Axe is definitely much better than gold axe. It takes 7 strikes per tree versus 11, and it hits faster (I haven't timed it, but it's faster).
Additionally, there seems to be a bug with the Demonite Axe. While swinging the axe if you try to turn around/walk the other direction, your character walks backwards instead. Compared behavior to all Golden weapons, in which the character changes direction.
