Zero Defense Greaves

I'm under the impression that the zero defense greaves is a simple oversight. I mean, if they were meant to be cosmetic, wouldn't they just go ahead and make them a vanity item? I get the feeling that they had some sort of little internal editing tool and while they were creating the item, they simple forgot to change the "Defense" field for the item from the default of zero.
