Not the worm AI?

I think that the EoW does not use the worm AI because it's segments have induvidual health (see Worm AI) unlike the Worm ai. -- 86.2.83.34 2:39 PM Friday, July 26, 2013 (BST)

It still follows the same attack pattern, though; even when split into segments, they all become individual worms. Ivysaur1996 (talk) 15:05, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Possible Anomaly

Isn't it weird that Devourers deal more damage than EoW? Seems like an Anomaly to me.--99.179.28.210 02:58, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

The thing is - only the head damages the player, but still, seems odd. --NullTalk 04:06, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Do you mean the Devourer body doesn't damage? I know for a fact EoW body segments damage, are you sure?--99.179.28.210 06:14, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

"Only one can be summoned at any one time. Trying to summon another will result in instant death."

This is absolutely not true. If you use worm food and then break a third shadow orb, two of them appear. If you break an orb and then use worm food, you will die. You need to summon him with the worm food first, but it's quite easy to get two of them at once. 98.118.111.125 20:23, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Also, fake signature HAHAHHA I also encountered multiple Eaters by breaking 6 shadow orbs in a row without fighting the first one. Adding the information to the page.--DoubleFloat 12:18, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Bug?

I used worm food on a world where no shadow orbs were broken yet, but two EoWs spawned, though one message appeared when summoned and when the second worm was defeated. I had a hard time with silver-tier equipment. What is that?

Perhaps there was a trap somewhere that was set off when he spawned causing him to split in 2 before you first saw him? --0icke0 (talk) 19:27, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

1.0.5 Changes

1. He no longer drops shadow armor pieces. 2. He can only be fought in the corruption. If you try and use a magic mirror and go back to the forest, he won't come to you, and if you try going back to where you summoned him, he will disappear. You'll get an "Eater of Worlds has been defeated!" message, but no loot. It happened to me twice. I would like to add these things to the list, however, I don't want to be marked as a vandal for posting what is essentially two anecdotes. Anyone want to verify these EoW changes? Wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I'd post it here. This is probably a bug but I've never had it happen before and there have been so many changes made it wouldn't surprise me if this was one of them. Anyway, I was venturing into the corruption to get myself a gun from shadow orbs. I broke 1, didn't get a gun, so went and found another 1. I broke it, no gun, but I got the message that the EoW had come. So 2 Shadow Orbs and I ended up fighting him. TL;DR: I broke 2 shadow orbs in a new 1.0.5 world and ended up fighting EoW. 118.92.122.168 07:49, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Maybe a shadow orb was misplaced and destroyed upon world generation.--Atomicblast6 (talk) 20:02, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Just a quick bug report...

On the subject of bugs... I made a new world last night. Upon spawning as a new character, boss music started playing. I kind of panicked, as well I had a copper short sword to fend him off.

Waited a minute or so, nothing happened. Suddenly the message that he was defeated appeared.

I was like "...Mmkay..."

Proceeded to venture underground in a cave that was near my spawn. I eventually found his loot DEEP underground... So I wonder if he still TRIES to follow you back to spawn, but bugs out?

I think he takes damage of some kind once he leaves the corruption. I summoned him via Worm Food, fought him and died. Ran back, fought him while trying to lead him to my spawn point, which had a lot more flat ground... I figured Hermes Boots had given me a headstart on him, but I ended up waiting there for a while and not seeing him. His death message popped up eventually, but I never found the loot.--Ultima 08:03, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Magic Mirror is okay, but carefully

I used a magic mirror to panic about 200 feet vertically to a floating island, and when I got back down after a couple seconds he was still there. I proceeded to defeat him as normal.

Yes, the magic mirror is okay, however, if you had returned to the corruption slower, it would have despawned. Bluepeanut11 (talk) 07:03, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

Individual Parts

Built a house on the absolute edge of the Corruption. Almost immediately after splitting EoW in half, I died, and I returned only to find the smaller half of him still there. After killing this smaller half, message came up that he was defeated and he dropped his loot, but no reappearance of the second worm. It might be possible that individual parts can be "defeated" by leading them out of the Corruption?--Kitsune 12:06, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Additional Note: I can be sure that I didn't defeat the parts seperately, as each segment of EoW drops at least 1 Shadow Scale, but I only have 28 in my inventory (the supposed minimum is 50, if all segments are defeated).--Kitsune 12:09, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I think what must have happend was: 1. You split the worm in half. 2. You die, leaving the worm to start despawning. 3. One part despawns, but before the other one can too, you respawn. 4. The living half of the worm comes back to fight you. Bluepeanut11 (talk) 07:03, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

Most efficient way to kill him

I have found the most efficient way to kill him which requires Water Bolt (a spell which uses mana) : dig a horizontal cavern in the corruption, about 20 blocs long and summon him in there. If you made your cavern at the left or right edge of the corrupt zone the eater of worlds will most likely come to you by the right or left side of your cavern, all you'll have to do is shoot as many balls as you can to the eater of worlds and he'll be down in 30 seconds as the balls will bounce on the walls and deal some crazy damage ! Water Bolt can be easily found in the dungeon by destroying books, if you do not have access to the dungeon you still can destroy the few books you will find on the way down until you reach the depth where skeletron's head can one shoot you and with a little of luck you'll have it.

Fleeing

Hi! I have a question. If you flee from this guy, after smashing the shadow orb to summon him, using the magic mirror, will he follow you or disappear? Thanks in advance! 213.93.184.183 19:03, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

It stops chasing you whenever you leave the Corruption. So if you use your Magic Mirror (assuming your spawn isn't in the Corruption), it'll flee. [[iLiaWneK|talk|contributions]]  21:04, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Allright, thanks. And don't worry, I'll never set my spawn in the corruption :-). 213.93.184.183 14:24, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Page lacking information

This page should have a paragraph that explains how to summon it. As it stands right now, the page is written in a way that assumes the reader already knows how to cause the Eater of Worlds to appear. 98.151.233.238 10:13, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Very first paragraph: "It is summoned by using Worm Food in the Corruption or by smashing 3 Shadow Orbs." That seems to cover it. --Lunboks 11:27, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

???

Ok,so when i was farming the corrupted mushrooms(Whatever they're called)He appeared.I didnt use any of the things needed either. Why????????A bug i think.Terrariafreakpiper6:07, 28 Septemebr 2011 (UTC)

== Very efficient way to kill in all modes the spiky balls from the goblin tinkerer and goblin army are very useful in prehardmode hardcore in killing the eater of worlds, as you dont have many weapons(in my case) that do enough damage before it finally kills you, just keep retreating into a little u shaped cup in the air and put honey in it for regen, then spam the spiked balls all over and keep doing it until he comes up for you, in that case just evade and swing a mace/flaming mace constantly to not get hit by vile spit. repeat until he dies would also recommend using the buffs iron skin, regeneration, endurance, thorns, swiftness, featherfall for mobility, mana regeneration, magic power, archery, summoning, and wrath potions. also use burgers or other foods and you may want to kit your arena with campfires, heart lanterns, and star in a bottle - Greg Marsh feb 12 2021 7:45 pm 65.185.163.255 00:45, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

oh. also they're called "Vile Mushrooms"

Eater of Worlds not spawning during multiplayer (1.1)

I was playing Multiplayer with my friend and we were preparing for the Eater of Worlds, but when we broke the orb, nothing happened. Not even a message. We tried another 3 but again nothing happened. So we farmed for the summon item. Upon using it, again, nothing happened. I think in 1.1 EoW is broken, and can't be summoned. I had to go farm for the scales and ore on my singleplayer character. Two notes on the page Conflict

"The eater of worlds will despawn if the player takes too long,..."
"The eater of worlds, slong with KIng Slime, are the only two bosses that can be fought indefinitely.

See my point? --72.196.220.72 18:38, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Yea, if it despawns after awhile then why does it say that he can be fought indefinitely (forever)? this needs to be changed so either takes too long or forever Wolf (talk) 14:45, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

Mobile Drops

I find it pretty hard to believe that each segment of the Eater of Worlds drops 1-3 Rotten Chunks of the mobile version, as it is used in the recipe for Worm Food and the Vile Powder can be infinitely purchased. This would allow for infinite farming of the boss. For that reason, I'm removing it. Chrisf1020 (talk) 23:58, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Soul of night in 1.3

It appears that soul of night no longer drops from this boss in hardmode

EoW 1.4 Lenght

How many segments is the Eater of Worlds long in 1.4? --Superwill771 (talk) 23:23, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Apparently EoW is 50 segments (🎮🕹3DS) and 67 in classic/72 in expert (💻📱)

Additional Despawn Condition

So after doing some messing around in terraria I think I've found another thing that can cause the EoW to despawn.

If he does not attack you for a certain period of time he can just despawn right where he is. I don't have any SOLID evidence of this but after about 20 attempts to fight him, in a controled environment and him despawning seemingly for no reason, I'm fairly confident in my answer. Several times he even despawned on-screen. I'm talking a good 20-30 body segments on-screen and he just dissapears. The only thing that I intentionally changed in the way that I was fighting him was delebritly getting him to shoot at me every now and then. And this seems to have stopped him from despawning all the time. Aidanamite (talk) 15:49, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

After some code analysis and further testing, I believe what was causing it to despawn was it being in the "despawn" area for too long. The EoW calculates it's despawn timer based on only its heads, not its body and tail segments. This means that if all the EoW heads are out of frame for too long then it will despawn. Regrardless of weither or not you can see part of its body, are still in the corruption, it is targeting you or even while it is activly shooting at you. Eater of Worlds RGB effect?

What is the effect of the EoW RGB? --Blazerun19 (talk) 23:45, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Fact Wolf (talk) 14:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

So, i was fighting this guy with the blue moon mace and i defeated him in less than a min. if you are having a hard time just get a strong mace b-cause they spin around you making it so the stronger it is the easier it is because

take that the blue moon has 71 damage - the body parts are like 100 health each - sit there and hold the attack button - EZ WIN!!!!! Wolf (talk) 14:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

The drop rate of Shadow Scale should be changed in Expert/Master mode

Because of the update of 1.4.4, The drop rate of Shadow Scale has been reduced notably in Expert/Master mode. In a game run of ftw(Expert->Master), when I defeated 60% parts of the Eater of World, I've only looted 4 Shadow scales. It's quite disappointing. Could the drop rate of shadow scale and tissue sample be provided correctly from body parts or creeper in Expert/Master mode?
