Creation

So I just created this proposal. I've never been one for document writing, so please help X_x happypal (talk • contribs) 06:41, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

It looks good for a start, I would prefer that all videos be displayed at default size, so limiting the instructions to ony the first option would be preferable. -- Wynthyst File:Curseicon.png talk 06:53, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Great work on the guide :-P A couple of things I would like to add.
  • The default size on Youtube videos is somewhere around 450-500 pixels across, which makes videos the most massive objects on the wiki. It might be a good idea to shrink them a bit, as I've done with the videos in Guide:Getting started.
  • A video template would be a wonderful idea. When I was sizing and organizing the videos for the guide, I could not for the life of me get them completely even, and a template would probably solve that.
Everything else seems pretty solid. --Ragen 11:39, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
IMO, I don't think we need to enforce a video size, we should do what's best for each page depending on the other elements present (for example, a page with 3 infoboxes might warrant a smaller video...) We could recommend default video size, I guess.
For templates, I see pros and cons, but I think it would be a different discussion actually. Let's put that aside for now. happypal (talk • contribs) 12:15, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
That sounds reasonable. --Ragen 12:47, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Unfortunately, while we optimize the layout of the wiki for 1024x768, there are a lot of people viewing at 1920 (I'm one of them). When you shrink the videos below default, I personally don't see enough detail in them to make them worthwhile. Also, if we designate default sizing, then we will get consistency across the wiki. -- Wynthyst File:Curseicon.png talk 13:04, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
That makes sense. I'm at 1280x1024 and they are perfectly sized for it. I could imagine as the resolution becomes larger the videos will become smaller. I couldn't quite tell if you have looked at the videos I messed with on the guide, but how do they look? Were they in fact too small for your resolution? --Ragen 13:22, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
http://wiki.terrariaonline.com/index.php?title=Terraria_Wiki:Video_policy_proposal&curid=2555&diff=14882&oldid=14335 that was me, forgot to log in. SilverSwift ...TALK... 22:35, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
That was some nice rewrite. happypal (talk • contribs) 06:40, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Enacting

This should be an official policy sooner rather than later. Many of the videos being posted contain redundant or incorrect information, are far too long, and contain subscription appeals. Thursday 16:00, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Not that I care about the removed videos, but this isn't official just yet. We might want to wait a bit longer before we fully enforce it. I don't think most of the community even knows of its existence; it has only been on the Community Portal for 3 days. Let's wait until it's officially approved. SilverSwift ...TALK... 16:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
We should hurry it up, then. It's a good idea to have something to point to when removing pointless videos. Currently, TerrariaHelp is spamming their video for the sake of views (and, I'm guessing, because I've removed their videos before along with everyone else's). Thursday 17:18, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
I have no problem enforcing it now even though it's still in proposal form. There is not going to be any sitewide notice when it's fully approved, so saying that most people don't know about it, is not an issue. Editors learn about policies by being pointed to them via their talk page as is being done (or should be) currently. If they disagree with the proposal, they should join the discussion. Things like what TerrariaHelp was doing is in general disruptive to the wiki, by continuing after being asked to stop, so the block is valid. -- Wynthyst File:Curseicon.png talk 22:35, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Related videos

I still have a problem with the related video section as proposed. I don't see how this assists in reducing the spamming of videos, or improve the quality of videos our viewers are being directed to. The purpose of the extension is to make it possible to keep visitors on the wiki, rather than send them to external sites. If there is a related video that is important it should be on a wiki page. I would suggest that we encourage expansion of our Guides section (where the video rule is more lenient) to include strategy guides etc, rather than encourage offsite linking of videos. Then the links could be to Related Pages rather than Related Videos. -- Wynthyst File:Curseicon.png talk 22:35, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

That is a good point. We should probably try to promote our guide section more by focusing videos into that section. --JonTheMon 00:55, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
I'd argue that the point of the extension is not "to keep visitors on the wiki". It's to allow a video to be embedded on a page, to illustrate said page. If a video is interesting, but merely related, it can be put into an "external links" section, using the same criteria for any other link we put in that section. Now if we have a guide that covers the subject, then great! We embed said video on the Guide, and then link the Guide (potentially in a See Also section).
BTW, yeah, I think it would be best to put them directly in an "external links" section, rather than "videos" or "related videos". No reason to give them a special status. happypal (talk • contribs) 06:25, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
After further thought, I think it would be best to outright not allow any other videos except for the "embedded" criteria. We could add an exception for "Guide" videos, as a convenience: For example, the video at Obsidian. I do not think the video qualifies for the embedded criteria, but it sure as hell does for a guide. happypal (talk • contribs) 06:31, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Thoughts on policy 2? happypal (talk • contribs) 06:44, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Talk page video's

What rules we have about posting video's on talk pages. Because resently 92.102.44.143 has been adding video's to talk pages. While we don't want to remove what other people say it looks like those video's aren't really meant to explain a strategies, but only show someone defeating the hardmode bosses. --Icke 21:57, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Hermes Boots name

The page states "Boots of Hermes", when the actual name of the item is Hermes Boots. CreeperSlimePig (talk) 00:00, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
