The Hermes Boots are a pre-Hardmode accessory that can be found in Chests in the Underground and Cavern layers. While equipped, they grant the ability to sprint, allowing the player to reach maximum running speed faster, and they increase the player's maximum movement speed to 31 mph (22.73 tiles/second). The player will leave behind a visual trail of dust clouds as they sprint.

The Hermes Boots, Flurry Boots, and Sailfish Boots(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) have the same functionality, and their effects do not stack with each other.

Notes

  • The Hermes Boots can be found in regular, Golden, Rich Mahogany, Granite(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Marble(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Chests.

Tips

Using a Grappling Hook to reach maximum speed instantly.
  • The player can engage the speed ability of the boots immediately on a flat or relatively flat surface by shooting a single-lined grappling hook in front of them at the ground in the desired direction (while simultaneously using the movement keys to move that direction) and immediately pressing Jump to disengage the hook, using the speed of the hook as a jump start for the boots. The player gets a faster jump start by shooting it nearly parallel to the ground, as the farther the hook lands from the player, the faster they are pulled.
    • The same effect can be accomplished by dashing (e.g. with the Shield of Cthulhu(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Tabi).

Trivia

  • The Hermes Boots are very likely a reference to the Pegasus Boots obtainable in many of the games of The Legend of Zelda series, as the two share many similar traits:
    • Both pairs of boots greatly increase the running speed of the player.
    • Both items are named after a figure in Greek Mythology attributed with speed in some way.
    • The running sound and dust effects of both items are unmistakably similar.
    • Additionally, the pre-1.2 Hermes Boots sprite is nearly identical to the Pegasus Boots sprite from The Minish Cap, with only a slight pixel difference.
