tips on slaying...

the EOC

Heyo, Spinfx here. You posted on my talk page several months ago about fighting the Eater of Worlds (although you titled this section EOC, which is generally understood to stand for Eye Of Cthulhu). How exactly is the strategy guide failing you? I'm gonna assume waiting for an answer will similarly take as long so I'll just info dump you.

[1] Terrain Preparation

  • Are you sure you are doing this? Creating an arena is just as important as it is for facing off the Eye of Cthulhu. The EoW uses the burrower-style AI in it's movement pattern so you need a wide enough arena to ensure you can get out of the way when it loops and coils around. Fighting it on terrain, even if you flattened the ground, gives you no room to maneuver since you're stuck on one vertical base (unless you can fly or something, but I'm guessing if you have trouble with this guy you haven't reached Hardmode and thus don't have access to said flying accessory).

[2] Equipment Preparation

  • Fuck the huge walls of text on that strategy page regarding weapons; far too many people assume access to weapons requiring materials obtainable through so much effort you'd already have beaten the EOW by then (this is why I don't like to post in strategy guides, because morons keep saying "lol boss is easy i kill it with ultimate weapon" - fuck that, guides aren't for people with access to ultimate weapons, if we did then we wouldn't need a freaking guide).
CRAFT A THORN CHAKRAM.
That is, in essence, the primary goal of my early game in Terraria. It bounces off obstacles, which means in an arena you can make angle shots. It's ranged, so you don't have to mash your face up close to the boss and risk getting your spleen sandpapered out. It's a boomerang, which means it doesn't rely on ammunition like bows nor inflict pathetic ranged damage like arrows.
  • Brew some potions. Come on, you're going to fight a boss, unless you've been totally fucking around doing nothing but dig randomly you should already have plenty of unused ingredients for the following:
    • Regeneration Potion -- bottle, water, daybloom, mushroom? These are SO common. The potion lasts 5 minutes too, so you'll really only need 1. There's no excuse not to drink one of these before facing the boss.
    • Ironskin Potion -- bottle, water, daybloom, iron ore. Also common, although you need to have stored some ore instead of smelting them all into bars. +8 defense, and same 5 minutes as the regen potion. No excuse not to drink one before the fight.
    • I'm going to assume you already have some lesser/regular healing potions. You don't really need that many, plus the potion cooldown limits how often you can drink them anyway. Use larger ones if you feel the lesser ones don't heal enough hp.
  • Gold armor. You can wear lesser armor if you're in a hurry but since you're having trouble every point of defense will help.

[3] The actual fight

  • The EOW is a burrower; it's going to lunge at you from an angle. This means you should be idling on one of the higher tiers of your arena until you spot it coming at you. DODGE FIRST. You're not getting points for style. Hell, the game doesn't even award exp like in RPGs. You only need to dodge the head, since the body segments follow (mostly) directly in the same path. After dodging then you're safe to spam your thorn chakram at it. If you're close the chakram will return to you quite fast so you can literally hit it a dozen times before the EOW finally gets out of reach underground again.
  • You need to understand the strategy guide's tips on "managing the segments". The EOW will split up each time a segment is destroyed, therefore you want to limit how many worms it has split into by concentrating on the smaller ones first. Destroy them completely, then only go back to attacking the larger ones.

Welp, dunno how much that's gonna help especially since you've probably already quit playing after all this time. Shrug. - Spinfx 09:05, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
