World map concept for Terraria 2, shared by Redigit in August 2022.[1]

Terraria 2 is to be the second installment of the Terraria series. Little is known about the nature and content of the game, and there is currently no release date. Terraria's lead developer, Redigit, explained that while the game will have "a lot in common with the original", it will also be "quite different". He "want[s] to expand on the whole Terraria universe". Specifically, he revealed that there are likely going to be infinite worlds, more biome diversity,[2][3][4] and a cohesive lore.[5] Cenx mentioned "many new hook mechanics"[6] and noted that Terraria 2 will be based on a different engine than Terraria,[6] which uses the .NET Framework and Microsoft XNA.

Terraria 2 has been in some form of development since February 2012.[3] It was originally mentioned that Redigit would be working on Terraria: Otherworld before developing Terraria 2,[7][8] but Terraria: Otherworld was cancelled on April 13, 2018.[9] Redigit has since returned working on Terraria full-time.[10][11] In May 2019, Redigit and Cenx mentioned plans to develop a successor to Terraria.[6] In May 2022, Redigit asked on Twitter which game the community wanted a remake of (it was implied the issue is not too serious), and one of the voting options was Terraria.[12] One user wondered what the point of a remake or sequel to Terraria is, to which Redigit replied: "You ain't seen nothing yet".[13] Cenx confirmed that development of Re-Logic's second game, "game two", will fully start after the release of 1.4.4, but it is unclear whether she referred to Terraria 2.[14] As there have been no news apart from this in recent years, the state of the game is currently unknown.
