Range of "nearby"

Is it 50 tiles or 25 tiles that count as nearby? Because my Merchant gets annoyed at having too many npcs near him but he's 38 blocks away from the nearest npc. "Near" in this context means that their housing flags are within 25 tiles (50 feet) of each other. This is not very far; for a typical desktop this is a small fraction of the screen. A typical screen might be over 100 tiles wide and 60 tiles high." https://terraria.gamepedia.com/NPCs#Happiness "Three or more other NPCs within 50 tiles (for each additional NPC)"

Currently, the "nearby" range is 50 tiles, as per the Desktop 1.4.1.1 source code. I've corrected the guide. --Rye Greenwood (talk) 14:57, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Forest / Space?

First, sorry if this discussion should go on Talk:NPCs instead of here. I decided to put happiness-related questions here. The question is, do NPCs consider Space as the Forest? The Forest Pylon does so, and it works fine in my sky base, but I forgot to ask the NPCs about their happiness and thus don't know. I have my Guide, Golfer and Zoologist in the sky base, and want to know if they would gain the Forest happiness boost or if it is negated in space. --2057clones (talk) 15:12, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Trios Instead of Pairs?

Now that NPCs still get the happiness boost with two other NPC nearby, should the "optimal placement" section be updated to use trios of NPCs instead of pairs? It should be possible to optimize further that way by stacking happiness boosts for NPCs who like multiple people. 73.239.20.174 16:13, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Far home home?

I moved the weapon smith and the nurse to the dessert as it said to do in the last section, but when I talked to them they said they were too far from home. Why is this? And how can I fix it? (also, if this is the wrong place to put questions like this, please tell me) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Superzombie150 (talk • contribs) at 22:15, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

edit: Nevermind, they respawned in their house and are fine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Superzombie150 (talk • contribs) at 23:16, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Newer Strategy

I made a calculator which uses the updated rules, and it's available online at https://tureptor.github.io/terraoptifind/ .

It provides the same strategy as the old strategy if you cap the maximum number of NPCs per group at 2.

Feel free to add new material to the guide page based on this calculator i.e. with strategies that prioritise the Goblin Tinkerer and/or the Tax Collector.

Big thanks for the calculator, it's a lot of help with trying to find an optimal setup that accounts for important NPCs. The "Newer Strategy" section of the NPC happiness guide doesn't seem accurate or reflective of the calculator, though. For example, the Nurse/Dye Trader/Arms Dealer/Stylist are all in the desert together with happiness values 0.84/0.84/0.79/0.84. However, both manual calculations and the calculator itself (min=4, max=5 to check) show that their values should be 0.88/0.88/0.83/0.88 in this setup. The written values on the guide seem to be incorporating the solidarity bonus for groups of 4, when 3 is the max. Could this be a remnant of an earlier version of the calculator that had the wrong requirements for the solidarity bonus? Just want to make sure I'm not missing or misunderstanding something before I change it. —Lowoli (talk) 23:51, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
