Help:Group rights

From Terraria Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

All wiki users are part of user groups which each have associated group rights, special types of permissions to make a change or perform a task on the Terraria Wiki. One prominent example of a user group is administrator or admin. A list of all user groups and their group rights can be found at Special:ListGroupRights.

Soft security – there are no permissions

Wikis like the Terraria Wiki are typically set up to be freely and openly edited. This means anyone can edit pages, which is only possible because wikis offer a kind of "soft security". By making it very simple to monitor edits or changes and revert (or undo) them to retrieve an older version of a page, a wiki doesn't need to be very restrictive at all.

There are no permissions. Everyone is an administrator. You don't need permission to edit, and you are encouraged to "be bold", go forth and edit!

...at least that is the theory. In practice, there are malicious editors, and so MediaWiki software does offer many options related to permissions.

Checking your user groups

To check which user groups your account belongs to, do one of the following:

  • Visit your Preferences page (Special:Preferences) and look next to "Member of groups:".
  • Go to Special:ListUsers, enter your username in the box, and click "Show".
  • Go to Special:UserRights, enter your username in the box, click "Load user groups", and view the groups you belong to.

The latter two techniques can also be used to view the user groups of other users.

Assigning and revoking user groups

Adding or removing a user to/from a user group within the wiki software grants or revokes the associated extra rights in the process. This can be done by going to the Special:UserRights page and checking and/or unchecking the respective checkboxes. This action requires special permission itself: Typically only bureaucrats (sometimes administrators) have the requisite permission to assign and revoke user groups.

If you would like to join a new user group or leave one you are already in, contact a bureaucrat.
