Eye of Cthulhu Gear and Strategies

Eye of Cthulhu is most likely the first or second boss you will encounter in your playthrough, so the fight shouldn't be that challenging, even on higher difficulties.
Arena
a long run way about 200 blocks long made of 
Platforms floating 10 to 20 blocks in the air is usually more than enough, additional platform rows vertically can be added to help with turning around and dodging the 
Servant of Cthulhu though not necessary.
Gear
Armor
for Melee Users:
Best
Ancient Shadow armor is the best armor set available, but is extremely luck reliant to obtain, it is not recommended to go for this armor set unless you want to truly min max.
Good
Platinum armor is a simple armor set that grants the highest defense, fitting for players who like to get up close and personal with the boss.
Gladiator armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is an armor set that also works well for getting close to the boss, the set bonus allows for free range of movement even when things are hitting you, letting getting out of situations where the player is surrounded less dangerous.
Decent
Jungle armor is the next best option if you can't obtain the sets above, despite being a Mage set, it has higher defense than even 
Gold armor, allowing for the player to take quite a good amount of hits before going down.
Armor Mixing
Gi(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) can be used instead of any of the above set's Breastplates, sacrificing defense and the set bonus for even more damage, though it will require a bit of luck to obtain.
(note that 
Jungle Pants has the same defense stat as 
Ancient Shadow Greaves, making it the ideal choice besides Ancient Shadow Greaves if mixing armor with Gi)
for Ranger Users:
Best

Fossil armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is effectively a worse version of Ancient Shadow, buffing critical strike chance to increase damage albeit less overall.
Decent
any armor set that has high defense will do well if unable to obtain the sets above. Some examples include: Platinum armor, Jungle armor and Gold armor
