Criteria to unlock

Having attempted to get this NPC on two worlds now, I can reasonably assume there is more to unlocking her than just having free housing and right clicking her (this fails every single time).

In addition, I've tried with a wire block, a switch, etc. (found in the second world generated) and she won't be freed. Someone mind posting the actual method for getting this NPC or is my copy of Terraria horribly bugged? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.126.160.162 at 06:37, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

I didn't notice I came across her (was running from some skeletons lol) until I practically stepped on her. She was freed before I realised she wasn't a regular dungeon mob and I'd already thrown my Thorn Chakram at her. That was it, basically. I encased her in a small room of dirt blocks to prevent the skeletons chasing me from hurting her (I was worried about the NPCs-not-respawning bug), then quickly fled about 2 screens away. It was daytime and I didn't expect her to go anywhere yet but when I returned she was already gone and shortly afterwards I got the world message saying that she'd arrived. This was in SP, medium sized v1.1 world, autopause off (although I heard v1.1.1 fixes the bound-NPCs-not-freed-when-autopaused bug) - Spinfx 02:03, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Relationship to Goblin Tinkerer

Do Mechanic and Goblin Tinkerer crush on each other? I thought, once they worked together and had horrible explosions or something (reference to Goblin's 'explode by breathe on it' quote). And they're searching who's to blame on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 113.197.20.183 at 03:53, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Glitch?

Does it require the Angler to actually move in to a house for the mechanic to sell the Mechanic's rod? because in one of my worlds, the angler is only awoken, but not housed, although the Mechanic is still selling the Mechanic's rod. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.33.91.15 at 06:02, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

I believe the Angler just has to be "acquired", which switches on for the world once he's spoken to the first time. He doesn't necessarily need to be housed at the time that you speak to the Mechanic in order for the Rod to appear for sale. Equazcion (talk) 06:29, 1 Apr 2016 (UTC)

Glitch verification

Could someone please verify the following: "There is a bug where you can create a new world and the Mechanic will be in your NPC list without killing Skeletron (If you already had her in another world)" Thanks, TOTORO01 (talk) 19:10, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

It is better to just report bugs and glitches to the Official Forums than on the wiki. There, the developers can take a look into them. I will remove the item from the page as we generally don't include bugs/glitches. – ReedemtheD3ad! (talk) 06:37, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Reference

Can someone reference the game lore link in the trivia section about the games lore? 76.230.76.150 13:55, 31 May 2019 (UTC) RemixedWolf

Good idea! Done. – Ferretwings (talk) 15:27, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Bound Mechanic is Dead

Before I was able to rescue the Mechanic, she was killed in her “bound” stance. She should respawn, right? Snoc the hehaw (talk) 03:34, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Nevermind, she’s ok lol Snoc the hehaw (talk) 03:36, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

For others with the same question: Yes, the Bound Mechanic will respawn over and over again until she is freed – like the other bound NPCs, too. --Rye Greenwood (talk) 19:49, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Interesting note

one of the mechanic's possible names is 'terra'. should we say something about that in trivia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.131.193.6 at 20:34, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Bound Mechanic Spawn Conditions

I've done some experimentation around with the exact spawn conditions of the Bound Mechanic and I think there is a bit of criteria not stated on the mian page.

I'm fairly certain that the mechanic can only spawn in the Cavern layer and will not spawn in the Underground layer or higher. Has anyone here had it spawn in the Underground?

Note: While I believe they'll only spawn in the Cavern layer, I have had them spawn while I was in the Underground layer (near the Cavern layer), with them spawning below me inside the Cavern layer.

Initially I suspected that they would only spawn while the player themselves were in the Cavern layer, this was proven to be false during several tests. I think it is simply a greater chance of the Mechanic spawning when the player is inside or deeper into the Cavern layer due to the game having more area that matches the spawn conditions inside the players spawn radius.

I've taken a look at the Desktop version Desktop 1.4.1.2 source code and can confirm your findings. The Bound Mechanic can only spawn in the Cavern layer or below. The player does not need to be in the Caverns, but the tile on which she spawns does. --Rye Greenwood (talk) 01:42, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Bound Mechanic no longer obtainable before defeating Skeletron

It doesn't seem like the Bound Mechanic is spawning before defeating Skeletron in Drunk worlds anymore, though I don't know where in the source code to find anything about it to confirm it. Johanniklas (talk) 22:42, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
