How to Obtain?

Some baits obtaining are just simple, find the bug and catch it using bug net, but some other baits are not obvious (like Master Bait and Journeyman Bait), I suggest to place some kind of info on how to obtain the baits. FunAlways (talk) 02:53, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Bait are obtained from the Angler for completing quests. But yeah, I guess, that should be put in there. Sodapone (talk) 03:16, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

The one baking my head right now is jellyfish, since it seems like the easy thing to do would be firing up a statue to get a limitless supply of bait... but you can't catch the blue jellyfish from the statue in the bug net. I tried going to the ocean to pick up some pink jellyfish, but that didn't work either. It seems like the bug net doesn't work on jellyfish at all, so how do you use jellyfish as bait? Are you 'supposed' to use the bug net but there's a bug (in the bug net... a bug net bug), or is there some other way to catch jellyfish, or are these different entities altogether that just happen to be named the same thing as existing mobs? CDarklock (talk) 17:04, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Apparently the "bait" jellyfish are different entities that have been given a similar name in-game. I caught a blue jellyfish by fishing in the Underground, and the sprite was smaller, like the on that can be seen inside the Jellyfish Jar. --186.136.111.144 15:41, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Bait Consumption

In the time I've been fishing since the update, I've noticed bait is not always consumed when you catch a fish, but can been when cating crates. It may just be a random chance per cast/catch that bait is lost. --96.42.19.109 17:46, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

I have noticed it can be quite random, sometimes the same rod and bait get me 10 fish and others only one before losing a bait. In any case, in this page it's stated that bait power reduces bait consumption... but in the forums a lot of people are saying bait power works just like fishing power in rods, i.e. it gets you better fish. The Fishing page was recently updated with similar information. --186.136.111.144 19:12, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Bait power, Fishing power of the Pole, equipment, and time of day all factor into the quality of the catch. I fleshed this out at Fishing from a dive through the code. Equazcion (talk) 18:43, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Trivia Section

I mentioned that the 'Master Bait' was most likely a play on words for the act of self stimulation, and it was removed by DoubleFloat for the following reason:

"No source for this. As the whole fishing mechanic is build around a child this reference seems rather unlikey."

I disagree, it would not be the first sexual innuendo this game has made, (see Golden Shower). This is a very old fishing joke, with many bait & tackle shops choosing to humorously name themselves this, which a quick Google search will prove. Also, most associative trivia on this wiki is speculation -- do you plan to remove every bit of trivia that does not have a source? If so, you are going to be very busy. As a side note, I am not the only one that has noticed this, Google 'Terraria Master Bait', and you will see quite a bit of buzz about it, including a video from major Terraria YouTuber, HERO. Livemike (talk) 19:45, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

  • I didn't know this phrase was that popular with the fishing community, so sorry for that. Although I still think the choice of using this phrase in connection with a child NPC was rather poor. --DoubleFloat (talk) 14:52, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
We don't know if the Angler is a child. He has a lot of fae-like attributes: arrogance, seemingly has no parents, speaks in lofty tones, seems to have ulterior motives, disappears in a puff of smoke instead of gibbing at death, etc. For all we know, he's a member of The Fair Folk who likes fish. FyreNWater (talk) 21:01, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Even if he is a child, my kids are eight and ten and they think any kind of sexual wordplay is hilarious; they consider "that's what she said" just about the funniest thing in the world. Well, either that, or something that sounds like a fart. CDarklock (talk) 17:10, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
This page has seen a lot of edit fighting over this one bit of trivia already. I for one believe it should stay because A) it's by far not the first sexual pun in the game (mourning wood, anyone?) and B) it's an old fishing joke as it has already been pointed out. The current "trivia" that has replaced it is evident to probably anyone with a rudimentary grasp of English and seems to be more of an excuse to remove the old one. --186.136.111.144 19:39, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
I replaced it. The last revert said "no, just no", which hints that either the editor found it offensive or unbelievable. I find it quite believable given the other sexual humor in the game and the fact that it's a common fishing joke. If the wiki were to adopt a rule barring the explanation of such things, despite their being there, I'd say it can go -- but until then, it should remain. Equazcion (talk) 19:41, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
I would beg to differ on the fishing joke, since there is Apprentice Bait and Journeyman Bait, it seems that Master Bait is just refrencing the fishing skill level, I would re-add my old trivia without tampering with the trivia that I feel is rather immature, but I honestly thing that Equazcion would just undo it again. As to be honest the whole skill thing a logical piece of trivia and I dont think it would deserve removal. Would you still say the whole masturbate/master bait thing if there was novice bait and expert bait? What if they got tired of people mistaking it and simply renamed Master Bait to Expert Bait? Just throwing out a few thoughts. WelchDrew (talk) 20:02, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, we could easily have both to have the whole picture of the joke in place and add that it's a common fishing joke and everyone would be happy. If the devs hadn't actually called it Master Bait the joke would be nonexistant and the trivia needless; if they actually didn't intend the joke and it gets "fixed" in-game later, then we can simply remove the masturbation bit. --186.136.111.144 20:09, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
WelchDrew's choice of "trivia" is obvious information that doesn't belong in the trivia section. I would be pretty compelled to remove that if it were placed, as I would remove any over-explanation of something so obvious on any page, as it adds nothing. I'd be okay with leaving it, along with the joke explanation, as a compromise -- however I think WelchDrew wants it there only to justify removing the masturbation bit. If I'm wrong then I'm okay with having both.
As for the "what if", if the developers renamed Master Bait to Expert Bait, then of course there would be no joke to point out -- but that doesn't factor into what we do when it is named Master Bait. The developers clearly aren't shy about including sexual jokes in the game (Golden Shower, Mourning Wood), and combined with the fact that this is such a common joke and the name is so suggestive on its face at any rate, I'm not sure how you'd find it incomprehensible that it's intentional. They probably would have named it "expert bait" etc. if they didn't intend any humor here.
Again though, compromise is cool by me. Let's include both, if all are okay with that. Equazcion (talk) 20:14, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
I think it's perfect as it is right now: all the relevant info and viewpoints are there, so that should hopefully prevent any further misunderstanding. --186.136.111.144 21:06, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Its still inappropriate and unneeded. Plus kids view this site.10.109.0.156 12:10, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Those same kids also play the game, where you can take the severed arm of an undead and use it to smash bunnies and squirrels into bloody chunks. Should items be renamed to Heckstone or Banished To The Shadow Realm Sickle because kids might see them? Once you're at the point where you're casting piss spells, you can't really censor for a younger audience. 98.196.175.207 22:30, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Okay, #1, anybody who doubts for a second that the pun was intentional should probably get some therapy. I mean, really?!?

And #2, this "what about the kids" crap is so ridiculous. What is the fear, exactly? That kids will figure out that they aren't the only people who play with their junk? That they'll learn a word they can giggle about with their friends? I mean... seriously, I really don't understand what the fear is here.

Honestly, what keeps me up at night is that one day my kids will find out we live in a world where a huge minority of people are so neurotic that they flip out over a really corny pun. That is indeed a dark, dark world I have brought them in to... --24.93.29.60 09:36, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

How do you know which bait is active?

When I have multiple types of bait in my inventory I don't know which one is getting used up. From observation I think it uses the strongest bait you have first, but I am not sure what happens if there is a tie for bait power. Once we know what happens let's add it to the article. Camelotcrusade (talk) 02:12, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Ammo-type items like bait, paint, etc are used from the left-top slot of the inventory to the bottom-right. The topmost/left-most bait item will be used first. Equazcion (talk) 02:16, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Fishing without a bait

Some days ago I accidentally went fishing without baits in my inventory (hello quickstack!). This went unnoticed for a bit longer than it should have, since I managed to catch a wooden crate pretty early on. As I said I am fairly sure I did not have any baits on my inventory since I used quickstack on my fishing supply chest. Therefore I assume that baits are actually only needed for catching actual fishes. Could anybody please confirm this? I haven't been able to reproduce it yet, probably because of the crates low drop rate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.225.46.174 at 20:24, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Master Bait

You really had to explain that very obvious pun? Like, really? 2.29.92.144 02:19, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Yes, unfortunately I really did. I felt is was pretty obvious too. Livemike (talk) 07:25, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

Proof needed. Also, just because some people use the joke doesn't mean it was intended. Shadowater (talk) 13:06, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
See the discussion in the section #Trivia Section. Leaving it out completely is not a solution, as another editor would add it back in (with possible added vulgarity). It was decided that if worded correctly, the trivia could stay. – Ferretwings (talk) 16:06, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
There could simply be <!--Comment--> without /nowiki to warn editors not to add it in Bait and Golden Shower pages in place where Trivia should rest, for example:
<!-- WARNING!!!: Do NOT add any misinformation/unverified info in Trivia section or it will be deleted, this includes double-entendres of specific item names. -->
This way readers won't see it and editors won't add it, no downside and double-gain.
Please tell me if you agree or what you disagree about this Shadowater (talk) 16:34, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
If it is obvious that something is a double-entendre, shouldn't it be allowed in trivia? – Ferretwings (talk) 16:48, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
That's not double-entendre for everyone, just for dirty people. And shouldn't wiki(pedia) be objective??; True facts with proof, not subjective; Telling why something is named such way just because he thinks that. Even if master bait is a joke there is no proof that devs intended to make it.
I could also say in trivia that molotov cocktail is named such way because it represents c***, that's just my thinking that some other people could also share with me, right?? But that's not the truth, the truth is that it "was originally anti-tank, diesel-filled bottles the Finnish Army used against the Russians in the "Winter War" of 1939. The term is still used to refer to any small makeshift fire grenade made from a bottle of fuel or strong alcohol with a lit cloth in the neck." 5.134.110.61 17:21, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Dirty people? Really?
This isn't the only instance of "potty humor" found in Terraria see Golden Shower and Mourning Wood. – Ferretwings (talk) 17:34, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
You could say "molotov cocktail" is a dirty name, but that would be a pretty original interpretation. "Master bait" is an age-old joke, not some new thing thought up for the first time here. Were the developers not going for the joke, they wouldn't have picked a suggestive name that's so commonly used this way. "Expert bait," "Ultimate bait," or any of a dozen others would've worked better. Google "master bait" and see what comes up. And as Ferretwings alludes to, when you consider this as just one of three names in the game that are generally used suggestively -- Mourning Wood, Golden Shower, and Master Bait -- the probability that these were named with the purest of intentions becomes pretty low. Equazcion (talk) 17:50, 4 Jan 2017 (UTC)
You are missing the point, if it was 100% sure devs were going for joke then it should be emphasized, but because it's not it shouldn't be exposed just because minority of people think that's the reason it was so named. For example my guess is that golden shower is so called because it is yellow-gold (golden) and because it's spray-like (shower), but that's just my guess and my opinion, like 'urinating' is yours. The point of wiki is to add proven facts, not personal guesses and opinions. Shadowater (talk) 18:13, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
When the majority of people see the same thing, we add it to the wiki. (are you seriously telling me that the Golden Shower doesn't look like a guy urinating?) – Ferretwings (talk) 18:22, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Only when you want it to look like that, in-game you shoot in many different directions not just forward... Shadowater (talk) 18:38, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Well, this is why I spoke in terms of probabilities. You might see the term "Golden Shower" as innocent, but it's common sexual slang and is used that way in nearly all cases (any time you see or hear the term "golden shower" elsewhere, it's going to mean the sex act, or at least a humorous double-entendre as it is here). To say that it's being used innocently here despite its use in all other places would be arrogant. And further, again leaving personal opinion aside, the probability that these three terms, all of which are generally used as sexual innuendo in popular culture, would all appear here innocently by mere coincidence, is remote, to say the least.
Personally, I don't have a strong opinion on whether the page needs to say this. People either notice the joke or they don't and it's just trivia. The problem is that the joke is fairly obvious to most people and they're going to want to point it out here. Edit wars will then ensue, as we've seen. Whoever puts it back might not word it quite as delicately as we have here; then someone else will remove it, etc. It would be best to leave our somewhat decent version of the wording up. Equazcion (talk) 18:30, 4 Jan 2017 (UTC)
Did you see my comment suggestion to prevent edit wars? Shadowater (talk) 18:44, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
I did, yes, but a couple problems with that: While that should work in theory, it rarely does in practice. When people want something to display on a page, comments telling them not to don't often stop them. Also, it wouldn't be appropriate to warn people from doing so. While I don't think the page really suffers from the trivia item being absent, I also don't see a good reason to prohibit it from being there. It's valid trivia, as I explained in my previous comment, and about as relevant as trivia gets. The fact that you personally don't think these terms refer to what they tend to refer to in all other places is not a good reason to warn others not to post it. Equazcion (talk) 18:54, 4 Jan 2017 (UTC)
People come to wiki to see drop chances and something they didn't know, not the disgusting trivias Shadowater (talk) 19:06, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
...and here we come to the real issue: You personally think it's disgusting. I'm afraid you'll have to live with that, as it's not a good reason to prohibit anything. Our job here is not to pick and choose which information to display based on personal distaste. Feel free to head over to the forum and suggest that an item that is named for and looks like pee should not be in the game; but as long as it is, we can't tell people not to document that here just because it might offend a few people. Equazcion (talk) 19:18, 4 Jan 2017 (UTC)
It's not about item, it's about that it shouldn't be stated because it's subjective guess, not a true fact (even it's so obvious it's still not objective because it's not proven by devs), every other book is held the same way. Shadowater (talk) 19:24, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
If something is obvious enough on its own, we don't require a statement by the developers. Most of the valid trivia on this wiki was never explicitly stated by the developers. Equazcion (talk) 19:30, 4 Jan 2017 (UTC)

Bait Statues not Working for Bait as of 1.3.1.1?

From what the page says I should be able to catch worms with the worm statue, but after creating and wiring one up for production, they just poof into smoke like what the buggy statue is said to do. Not sure about the others, but it sounds like a likely change to all bait statue spawns. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shadowater (talk • contribs) at 13:06, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

It says that in the final tip, and on the Statue page just before the critter statue list. Should probably be clarified here more prominently though, I'll add something. Equazcion (talk) 13:12, 4 Jan 2017 (UTC)

Bait Items Table

Is there a reason I'm missing for why the gold counterparts of any of the critters aren't listed on the bait item table? Gold worm, Gold Grasshopper, Gold Ladybug, and Gold Water Strider are all listed as having bait power on the Critters page. Enchanted Nightcrawler also appears to have been excluded. Since those don't have their own page, things from the info box like stack size and sell price are nowhere to be found. Could a boxsmith maybe work their magic and add this? ty 95.90.148.17 02:20, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Request to add proper information for the baits?

I notice, as mentioned by another user on this discussion tab, there's not much information on the baits as items, such as sell price, stack size, and research amount for duplication. Could that potentially be added? (Would add it myself but tbh Idk how.) WhatAboutDustbunny (talk) 22:01, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for noting! I moved the table into a new section, which is the standard for almost all group pages like this one, and added the stack, sell, and research columns. --Rye Greenwood (talk) 22:36, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Incorrect max stack

Max stack is supposed to be 9999 rather than 999. I'm not sure how to change it myself. SlabFoot20 (talk) 23:04, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

The information about all bait items except the first three is taken from the cargo table "Items". The sources of the data are the individual articles, and if something seems out of date, a null-edit usually fixes it. So null-editing all pages where the stack is still displayed as 999 should fix it. --Rye Greenwood (talk) 05:12, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Item ID error for 'Worm'

On bait table, item ID for 'Worm' gives following error. Not familiar enough with Lua to understand why the error is given, or how to fix, and that editing the module is likely restricted to certain users.

Internal Item ID: Lua error in Module:ItemNames at line 11: bad argument #1 to 'pairs' (table expected, got nil).
