The Crimson is a biome that may replace the Corruption during world generation. It contains elements very similar to the corruption, but with a red color scheme and bloodier theme. It is also generally different in structure to the Corruption, with less chasms and more web-like caves. Crimson can also spread and "infect" more areas, just like the Corruption and Hallow.

The Crimson biome is introduced in 1.2, being an alternative to the Corruption and chosen at world generation, and as such the Crimson biome cannot co-exist with the Corruption in the same world. The red appearance of the biome, the flesh-resembling tree leaves and many gore-themed items obtained by Crimson materials suggests the biome's theme is based heavily on blood, instead of the darker, more shadow-like nature of the Corruption.

Instead of Shadow Orbs, the Crimson contains Demon Hearts that may be smashed for loot. Smashing three Demon Hearts will summon the boss, Brain of Cthulhu. Crimson Altars replace Demon Altars and perform the same function. An additional recipe, the Bloody Spine can be crafted from Vertebrae to summon the Brain of Cthulhu.

As with the Corruption, the Crimson has multiple chasms; however, unlike the Corruption's vertical drops, the chasms in the Crimson cut at angles into the terrain and lead to a large, somewhat circular pocket underground that branches off into smaller veins. At the end of the veins are Demon Hearts, the Crimson's equivalent of Shadow Orbs. Crimtane Ore and Crimson Altars replace the Corruption's Demonite Ore and Demon Altar respectively. The Crimson Altar functions the same as a Demon Altar, with only difference being the visual graphics. The Brain of Cthulhu is the Crimson version of the Eater of Worlds, being slightly more difficult. The tools, weapons and armor from the Crimson have minor stat boosts, in exchange for the Crimson's difficulty.

The Crimson can also be converted from any other biome using the Clentaminator with the Red Solution, only obtainable when the Steampunker is living in this biome. During Hardmode, the spread of Crimson is the exact same as the Corruption; replacing Grass with Crimson Grass, and Sand with Crimsand. Unlike the Corruption, planting a Sunflower will not prevent the Crimson from spreading even in Normal mode.

When the world generator generates the Crimson, any Sand that is within the biome is converted to Crimsand. Should the crimson overlap with the Snow Biome during world generation, it replaces Ice Blocks with Red Ice Blocks, along with Snow into Red Snow.

From the massive bones and skull that can be seen in the background, and gory nature of the area, one might assume the two are related. Perhaps in the death of some massive beast (Cthulhu?) its blood seeped into the ground, twisting and corrupting the place into the Crimson as we know it.

The chasms that make up the Crimson, when viewed from the map, occasionally appear in the form of long twisting arms ending in hands.

The Herpling is almost certainly a reference to the phrase, "Herp Derp", as both it and the Derpling use the same AI; bouncing in a rather silly manner toward the player.

Trivia

From the massive bones and skull that can be seen in the background, and gory nature of the area, one might assume the two are related. Perhaps in the death of some massive beast (Cthulhu?) its blood seeped into the ground, twisting and corrupting the place into the Crimson as we know it.

The chasms that make up the Crimson, when viewed from the map, occasionally appear in the form of long twisting arms ending in hands.

The Crimson may be a reference to War of the World's (2005) Redcrop, which was created by human remains. The trees in the background and the structures from the film have the same stringing flesh.

The Herpling is almost certainly a reference to the phrase, "Herp Derp", as both it and the Derpling use the same AI; bouncing in a rather silly manner toward the player.

Notes

 • You will know when creating a world that it will have Crimson instead of Corruption if it says "Making the world bloody" during creation.
 • Although the Crimson replaces the Corruption at world generation, it does not prevent Corruption from being created, either by purchasing Corrupt Seeds from the Dryad or importing corrupted materials from a world with Corruption. Using Unholy Water can also create Corruption in a world with Crimson; however, both Holy Water and Unholy Water have no effect on areas already effected by the Crimson.
