Capa del subterráneo (Underground Layer/es)
La Capa Subterránea es la primera capa debajo de la superficie. Ocupa el área entre la superficie y las capas de la caverna, comenzando a una profundidad de 0 Bloques y extendiéndose hacia abajo. Su fondo distintivo puede reconocer el Subsuelo, que ya no contiene Pared de tierra como el terreno de la superficie, sino que muestra un fondo único, a menudo marrón, sin pared natural. Los jugadores no pueden eliminar este telón de fondo utilizando un Martillo, ni pueden colocar bloques en el aire, ya que generalmente no existe ningún muro aquí (aunque los jugadores pueden colocar sus muros, al igual que pueden hacerlo sobre el terreno de superficie). Los bloques naturales subterráneos son generalmente similares a los de la superficie, con la suciedad y la piedra que constituyen la mayor parte del bioma. Arcilla, Silt, y gemas de bajo precio y minerales, también se pueden encontrar aquí en pequeños espacios. Algunos tesoros variados se pueden encontrar aquí, incluyendo Árboles Gema (que dejan caer Granos Gema, Piedra, y ocasionalmente sus respectivas gemas cuando se cortan); plantas tintóreas incluyendo Setas Verdes, Sanguinaria Naranja, y Hongos Cerceta; y la Raíz Parpadeante de hierba.
La Capa Subterranea es el hogar de enemigos más agresivos que los de la superficie. Más poderosos Slime Rojo y Slime Amarillo Aparecerán aquí abajo (junto con el raro Slime rosa), mientras que Blue Jellyfish aparecerá en el agua y Gusano Gigante se encuentran escarbando en la tierra. En el Hardmode, contrapartes más poderosas de estos enemigos aparecerán, con las Medusas, Medusa Verde, y Lodo Tóxico reemplazando mayormente a los Gusanos Gigantes, Medusas Azules, y los Slimes regulares respectivamente.
Las Trampas también comenzarán a aparecer en esta capa. Las Cabinas Subterráneas, aunque no tan comunes como en las Cavernas, aparecerán frecuentemente con prácticos botines como la Nube Embotellada, Botas de Hermes, y Espejo Mágico.
En general, no se pasa mucho tiempo aquí, pero en cambio en la capa de la Caverna, que tiene muchos más enemigos, genera tesoros y gotas únicas. Por lo tanto, es una idea sabia casi totalmente ignorar esta capa en favor de explorar las Cavernas.
Ocasionalmente, los bichos Ratón y Caracol se encuentran corriendo por ahí. En las Versión de PC, Versión de Consola y Versión móvil, Hadas tienen una rara oportunidad de aparecer al azar y guiar al jugador a un tesoro al azar (como Cofres, Cristales de vida, o Minerales) cercano.
Las verdaderas versiones subterráneas de los biomas, como la Tundra Subterránea o el Corrupción subterránea, no comienzan en esta capa, sino en la capa Caverna (excepto el Desierto subterráneo, que comienza en el terreno de la superficie y se extiende a través del subsuelo y una porción de la caverna). En Hardmode, algunos bloques del Subsuelo pueden ser convertidos en Hallow, Corrupción, o Carmesí.

- Desktop 1.4.0.5: Black Slimes and Blue Jellyfish can now spawn in Hardmode.
- Desktop 1.4.0.1:
- Added the alternative Otherworldly Underground track, originally from Terraria: Otherworld, which plays once the player has entered the 05162020 seed and pressed the "Music" option in the Party Girl's menu.
- Blue Jellyfish now have a 1 in 50 (2%) chance of dropping the Blue Jellyfish Kite on Windy Days.
- Cavern Pylons will now be sold by any happy NPC in the Undergroun for 7 GC 50 SC to 8 GC 50 SC. While any number of pylons can be placed Underground, only one Cavern Pylon can be functionally used per world.
- Enchanted Sword in Shrine background objects now have 1 in 10 chance of dropping the Terragrim instead of the Arkhalis.
- Fairies now have a rare chance to appear randomly and guide the player to treasures such as Chests, Life Crystals, and ore.
- Gem Trees now have a rare chance of generating and, when chopped down, drop Gemcorns, Stone, and rarely Gems.
- Gold Chests can now once again spawn outside of Underground Cabins.
- Kelp will now grow on Sand underground.
- The Enchanted Boomerang no longer generates in Gold Chests, as it is now crafted instead.
- The Mace can now be found in Gold Chests.

- Diggers, the more powerful equivalent of Giant Worms which will mostly replace them. Like Giant Worms, they also drop the Whoopie Cushion.

- Toxic Sludges mostly replace Blue, Red, and Yellow Slimes.
- Alongside these enemies, the Possessed Armor, a Hardmode equivalent to Zombies, will also spawn down here.
- Cobalt Ore will now generate here after the player has smashed a Demon Altar (other Hardmode ores generate deeper in the Caverns).
- Traps such as Boulders, Dart Traps, and Explosives now have a chance to generate here and surprise the player.
- Underground Cabins, which hold Gold Chests (alongside some Cobwebs and furniture), now generate here.
