The Snail is a rather rare critter that spawns in the Underground and Cavern layers, but not in Ice, Crimson, Corruption, or Hallow biomes. It can also spawn in front of unsafe Living Wood Walls below the surface at a much higher rate. The Snail has only 5 health and no defense, and can be damaged by other enemies and players.
The Snail can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture (Snail Cage). Once crafted, the Snail cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
The Snail can be used as bait for fishing, with 10% bait power.
The Snail can be spawned by the Snail Statue, however statue-spawned critters cannot be caught with any Bug Net, and will disappear in a puff of smoke when the player attempts to do so.

Notes
- Unlike most critters, nearby town NPCs will reduce the spawn rate of Snails.[1]
- Spawns in front of unsafe Living Wood Walls are not affected by town NPCs, neither positively nor negatively.
- Snails cannot spawn below the halfway point between the beginning of the cavern layer and the true bottom world border.[1]
- Snails can spawn in the Underground Jungle biome, but not on top of Jungle grass blocks.
- The Snail AI is very similar to the Blazing Wheel AI.
Trivia
- Snails in Terraria only have two eye stalks, unlike snails in real life, which have two eye stalks and two feeling stalks.
- The
Bestiary entry for the Snail: "A slimy mollusk that thrives in damp, dark places. Fish are barely attracted to these."
