Swimming

A character submerged in water.

Swimming refers to the movement alteration a character is affected by when submerged in a liquid (water, honey, lava). By default, characters cannot swim; they sink to the bottom and can only jump when they reach it. Movement is slowed (especially in honey), and jumping acts as if the character were in the upper layers of the map, close to Space. While submerged, the character will also eventually run out of air. Some items grant the ability to swim, and equipment that grant flight (such as Rocket Boots and Wings) also work underwater.

Notes

  • Lava is, as most would probably guess, fairly dangerous to swim in. Some items, such as Obsidian Skin Potions and the Lava Charm, give temporary protection against it.
  • Sometimes, while swimming in draining/falling water, the player will receive air even without being close to the surface.
  • The Water Walking Boots will allow the player to walk on water. Its upgrade, the Lava Waders will allow the player to walk on all liquids.
  • When walking on a liquid, pressing ▼ Down will cause the player to sink.
