This article is about the biome. For the ore, see Meteorite.

A Meteorite biome is a mini-biome formed when a meteor crashes in the world. This event always occurs off-screen, leaving a crater lined with Meteorite ore for players to find somewhere in the world. A meteor event can only be triggered once the player has defeated the Eater of Worlds or the Brain of Cthulhu for the first time (see the exact conditions below). Players are alerted of a meteor crash via a status message: "A meteorite has landed!"

Meteorite biomes spawn Meteor Heads, a unique enemy type, which fly toward the player and follow them as they move, passing through all blocks that they come across. The spawning of Meteor Heads cannot be prevented as long as the area is considered a Meteorite biome, even with several NPCs nearby. However, the Space layer can override the Meteorite biome, and Harpies will spawn instead. If the player is in a Meteorite biome but also near the Space border, both Harpies and Meteor Heads can spawn.

A Meteorite biome requires at least 75 blocks of Meteorite (about 10% of an average Meteorite site). So, mining away most of the Meteorite removes the Meteorite biome and stops Meteor Heads from spawning.

Conditions

First crash

A Meteorite crash site is guaranteed to spawn after the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu is defeated for the first time.[1] If the boss is defeated between midnight and dawn (12:00 AM – 4:30 AM), then the meteor crashes immediately. Otherwise, it will crash at the next midnight (12:00 AM).

Subsequent crashes

Once the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu has been defeated for the first time in the world, meteors start randomly crashing on their own. There is a 1/50 (2%) chance each midnight (12:00 AM) for a meteor to fall.

Additionally, subsequent defeats of the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu have a 1/2 (50%) to spawn a Meteorite biome each time.[1]

  • Again, the crash site is generated immediately if the boss is defeated between midnight and dawn (and the 1/2 (50%) chance succeeds). Defeating the boss repeatedly during this time may therefore cause multiple meteor crashes in the same night.
  • Defeating the boss between dawn and midnight (4:30 AM – 12:00 AM) schedules a meteor crash for the following midnight (provided the 1/2 (50%) chance succeeds). Defeating the boss repeatedly during this time therefore increases the chance of a meteor falling at midnight, but still only one meteor can fall at midnight.
    • For example, defeating the boss once during the day has a 1/2 (50%) chance to schedule a meteor crash, whereas defeating it twice increases the chance to 3/4 (75%), defeating it three times increases the chance to 7/8 (87.5%), and so on.

Details

When a Meteorite biome is going to be spawned, the game will first check the amount of Meteorite blocks in the world: A meteor will not fall if there are already too many blocks of Meteorite placed above 0 ft. The limits are different depending on world size:[2]

  • Small worlds: 401 blocks
  • Medium worlds: 610 blocks
  • Large worlds: 801 blocks

Meteorite blocks below the surface are ignored and do not count towards this limit.

The horizontal coordinates of the Meteorite biome is randomly chosen between 150 tiles away from the left true world border and 150 tiles away from the right true world border. However, it cannot be around the world spawn point (exact width is 16% of the world width, or 672 (small worlds) / 1024 (medium worlds) / 1344 (large worlds) tiles).[a] The vertical coordinates is determined by solid tiles at the horizontal coordinate: the search begins at 70% altitude (see Space § Notes) and goes down to find the first unactuated solid tile (Planter Boxes are eligible, but not platforms). Then, the game checks a 30×30-tile area[b] around the chosen location. There has to be at least 600 solid blocks within the area for the location to be considered valid. Additionally, in this check:

After finding enough solid blocks, if any of the following conditions are met, this location will not be considered valid.[3]

If the location is considered invalid, the process above is repeated for 21000 (small worlds) / 32000 (medium worlds) / 42000 (large worlds) times at most.

Notes

  • The background will show an animated falling meteor shortly before the impact site is generated in the world. Note that this is just a visual effect instead of an accurate representation of where the Meteorite crash site will actually be created in the world: The meteor may appear to fall to the right side of the world, but it might have landed on the left side instead.
    • The meteor will only be displayed if the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu was defeated between dusk (7:30 PM) and 11:40 PM, or if the meteor is falling due to the random chance each night. It will always start falling in the background at 11:40 PM.[4]
    • Even if circumstances would prevent meteor landings (i.e., no new Meteorite biome would actually be generated), the background meteor will always appear when the conditions are fulfilled.
  • Meteors can only spawn when there are at least one player in the world. This means that meteors will not randomly spawn in multiplayer servers when no players is online.
  • When a Meteorite biome is generated, tiles near the center of the meteor are directly removed and do not trigger effects triggered upon breaking tiles; the rest of tiles are normally destroyed and can trigger these effects.[5]
  • If a straight opening without solid blocks exists at chosen location, a meteor can even crash into The Underworld.

Tips

For tips on defending against Meteor Heads, see Meteor Head § Tips.
  • Proper equipment, such as a tool with high mining speed (the fastest pickaxe capable of mining Meteorite available pre-Hardmode is the Bone Pickaxe; reforged to Light for an even higher speed) and protection against the Burning debuff (e.g. with an Obsidian Skull) will greatly facilitate efficient mining of the Meteorite.
  • Since meteors cannot fall if there are too many Meteorite blocks placed above 0 ft in the world, it is possible to completely prevent meteor strikes by placing a sufficient number of Meteorite blocks anywhere above 0 ft.
  • There are certain areas in the world a player may wish to protect from meteor crashes, such as player-built structures, the Ocean, the entrances to the Underground Jungle, the Underground Desert, chasms, or Living Trees. An easy way to protect these areas is by placing down a Chest near those areas. The Chest will protect everything within 35 tiles horizontally and vertically. Alternatively, adding a few Cloud or Sunplate Blocks will also protect an area.
  • If a Meteorite crash site cannot be located on the surface, it might have crashed into a Living Tree or a chasm in The Corruption/Crimson.

Trivia

  • The music of Meteorite biomes is overridden by the theme music of The Corruption, The Crimson, Glowing Mushroom biomes, and Space when crashed there.
  • While a player, Ghost, and the death screen can block a meteor from spawning at a location if the landing spot is within sight, the spawning of the meteor can actually be seen using Golf Balls to move the camera.
  • Meteorites in a landing site will also be painted if the blocks the Meteorites replaced were painted.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.5.0:
    • Meteors now avoid Demon/Crimson Altars.
    • Fixed Meteorites not fully syncing in multiplayer when landing.
    • Fixed Meteorites not clearing slopes, paints and coatings when generated.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.4:
    • Removed the condition that at least one Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart must have been smashed in the world in order for meteors to spawn randomly at midnight. The only condition remaining for this now is that the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu has been defeated at least once in the world.
    • Fixed an issue where meteors would be unable to spawn if the entire top of the world was covered with platforms.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.2:
    • Meteors no longer fall until after the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu has been defeated.
      • Defeating the boss for the first time now guarantees a meteor crash.
      • Smashing a Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart no longer has a stacking 1/2 (50%) chance of spawning a meteor the following midnight (or immediately, if smashed between midnight and dawn). Instead, this effect is now triggered by subsequent defeats of the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu.
