Not to be confused with On Fire!.
The effect when walking over Hellstone Bricks and other burning blocks.

Burning is a debuff inflicted when the player comes in contact with Hellstone, Hellstone Bricks, Ancient Hellstone Bricks(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), or Meteorite. The player continuously takes 30 damage per second and has their movement speed reduced until they are no longer in contact with the block.

The debuff can be negated by equipping the Obsidian Skull or its derivatives, or by drinking an Obsidian Skin Potion.

Notes

  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) The debuff will not be inflicted from blocks that are hammered into a slope.
  • If the player is going at full speed while inflicted by this debuff, they will emit sounds and visual effects as if they are sprinting using Hermes Boots even if the player is not wearing them.

Trivia

  • The debuff was created for the sole purpose of preventing Hellstone/Meteorite abuse.[1] Before 1.2, these blocks directly damage the player when touched and grant invincibility frames. Players could voluntarily take direct damage from one of those blocks and use the immunity to avoid higher damage, such as lava or a Hardmode boss.
  • Prior to 1.3.0.1, all biomes that contained blocks that inflict this debuff had the same music as a Blood Moon.

History

  • Desktop 1.3.0.1:
    • No longer caused by developer items when worn in Expert Mode.
    • Sloping Meteorite, Hellstone, and Hellstone Brick no longer prevents this debuff.
