Emote Town Demolitionist.gif The Demolitionist

"Explosive" redirects here. For the placeable item encountered as a trap in Cavern areas, see Explosives. For the painting, see American Explosive.

Explosives are a type of consumable weapon. When used, they are thrown a short distance away from the player and explode after a delay. The explosion destroys almost all blocks, walls, and furniture within the explosion radius. Only a small number of objects are resistant to this.

The explosion also damages all enemies and critters, but not NPCs, in a certain radius. Players within the radius take damage as well, including the player who threw the explosive. The damage is classless, meaning it cannot be altered by any bonuses, unlike the great majority of weapons.

Having an explosive in the inventory fulfills one of the spawning criteria of the Demolitionist.

Types

All explosives are available in pre-Hardmode and cannot be auto-used.

Notes

  • There are several other consumable weapons which cause an explosion upon impact, e.g. Grenades. However, these deal ranged damage and are thus not considered part of the explosives class.
    • Despite not being part of the explosives class, any type of Grenade fulfills one of the requirements needed for the Demolitionist to arrive.
  • When fired from certain launchers, rockets of types II and IV destroy blocks within their radius. However, rockets are considered as ammunition.
  • Explosives always drop all the tiles they destroy.
  • A maximum of 400 "loose", dropped items can be present in the world at any given time, regardless of whether they are stacked. If more than 400 loose items are created as a result of destruction with explosives, some of them will be lost.
  • Explosives will only destroy unsafe background walls if there is at least one tile without a background wall within their blast radius, including behind foreground blocks.
