The Depth Meter is an informational accessory that displays the player's depth. Depth is relative to the boundary between the Surface and Underground layers, which has a depth of 0 and is displayed as "Level". The display shows the vertical distance to this line and the name of the current layer. Depth is always measured at the level of the player's feet. Depth is measured in feet, with one tile equaling two feet.

The Depth Meter has a 1/100 (1%) chance of being dropped by Cave Bats, Jungle Bats, Ice Bats, Giant Bats, and Spore Bats. Furthermore, it has a 1/80 (1.25%) chance of being dropped from Crawdads(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Giant Shellies(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Salamanders(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

The Depth Meter is one of the three parts necessary to make the GPS, with the others being the Compass and the Gold Watch or Platinum Watch, and as such is a required ingredient in crafting the Shellphone(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

Notes

  • Unlike most accessories, informational accessories such as the Depth Meter do not need to be equipped in an accessory slot. The Depth Meter may be carried in the player's inventory without loss of functionality, unless equipped to a social slot. Additionally, the info it provides will be shared with players of the same team in multiplayer that are within 50 tiles. Keep in mind modifiers will no longer apply to the player when not equipped.
  • The Depth Meter will not work if equipped in a vanity slot.
  • Cave Bats spawned by a Bat Statue only have a 1/500 (0.2%) chance of dropping a Depth Meter.

Tips

Trivia

  • In real life, the standard measurement of elevation is height above mean sea level, meaning that the average sea level has an elevation of zero. This is not the case in Terraria; the elevations of both Oceans are rarely the same and often much higher than 0 feet.
