how do i post messages on terraria official forum page. i have an acount — Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.148.67.103 at 00:50, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

This is a wiki for the game, not the forums. You'll have to direct your question to the support staff there. Gearzein (talk) 02:06, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Go to http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?forums/ , click on one of the discussion categories (such as general cross-platform discussions), then click the "post new thread" button at the top-right. Or click a thread and type a reply in the box at the bottom of the thread, and hit "post reply". Equazcion (talk) 02:09, 5 Jan 2015 (UTC)

"Direct Upgrade"

This phrase has been thrown around a lot on weapon and armor pages, suggesting that some weapons are intended to directly replace certain others. While some are understandable and have some basis in logic (obviously True Excalibur is a better version of Excalibur), a lot of these claims are stretches based entirely on personal interpretation. I'm looking for some community feedback before I go through and basically remove them all, in case someone objects or there's some logic for their inclusion. Gearzein (talk) 02:47, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Seems reasonable to me. That phrase is used in some inappropriate places, and removing most or all of them might be the best solution. Equazcion (talk) 07:34, 8 Jan 2015 (UTC)

'Names of Town NPCs' page

I propose that there is a page which has all the names of all the town NPCs and which type they are so that the players that don't know which type of NPC is wanting to settle down so they can get all the requirements etc. I myself have found myself in that situation and I think that many other Terrarians will find themselves in this sitaution. Anybody who backs this please reply. Cooly9 (talk) 19:17, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

The requirements of all NPCs that are already spawned would be the same: a house. Unless I'm misunderstanding this? Equazcion (talk) 19:25, 8 Jan 2015 (UTC)
Personally being a mobile gamer on Terraria even if you don't have all the neccesary requirements (other than a house) it will still say <NPCNAME> would like to settle down. Also would be good for reference. Cooly9 (talk) 20:14, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Ah I see. I didn't realize the mobile version had that feature -- the PC version doesn't do that. Such a page would probably be useful then. Equazcion (talk) 20:17, 8 Jan 2015 (UTC)
Just asking if this page was a go-ahead, could a bot do it or would it have to be manually made? Cooly9 (talk) 20:26, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Done: NPC names :) Equazcion (talk) 20:30, 8 Jan 2015 (UTC)
Great job on the page, make sure that everyone knows this page exists and don't let it get dusty. Cooly9 (talk) 20:43, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
The page gets the names from the individual NPC pages, so it'll be updated automatically whenever the names change on their respective pages. I'm not sure where to link it from yet, but might put it on the main page and/or the game mechanics template soon. Equazcion (talk) 20:45, 8 Jan 2015 (UTC)

Mushroom bed

I'm trying to make a mushroom bed but it's not showing up in my crafting menu. I have 15 glowing mushrooms and 5 silk. I'm standing at my sawmill yet nothing. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Seems to work for me. You might want to post this question at the forum, you're likely to get more answers there. Equazcion (talk) 23:33, 9 Jan 2015 (UTC)

When's Fishhook

My friend and me on Xbox just wanted to know when the fish hook is coming on xbox — Preceding unsigned comment added by ImKizzing (talk • contribs)

Fish Hook was introduced in 1.2.4, so it's a few updates off. For future reference, though, you'd be better off asking this sort of question on the forums. Gearzein (talk) 14:26, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Breakable background

I suggest the creation of a page who speaks about the breakable background and what can they drops... Lightg4 (talk) 19:25, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

That would be Ambient objects. It could probably be made more accessible, but it's hard to find ways to give pages more visibility. Gearzein (talk) 21:25, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

The Undead Miner is missing

The Undead Miner is missing in the rare enemies section. -- Dinoxel discussion 12:05, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Item exponential growth exploit.

This is an exploit: if you wish to play in Re-Logic's intended manner, do not use this. Currently, the world save and character save happen at two different moments in game. Character save is pretty much automatic, to prevent Hardcore saves from being prevented upon death. World save, however, seems to only happen when you Save and Exit. Knowing this, I devised an experiment, and my results led me to this exploit. You could save an item into a chest by saving and exiting. Then, upon returning to the game, take the item from the chest, then close the program by forcing it to close (right click icon to close, end process via task manager). Doing this causes the game to leave you with the items in your inventory, and in the chest. Repeat this, and you could exponentially grow the amount you had by a factor of 2 to the power of the amount of times you did this. For instance, if you repeat this 10 times, you will multiply your total number of the items by 1024 (2^10). This means potentially gaining infinite stacks of Platinum coins, ores, armor sets, etc. I know this method is irrelevant, because you can just character edit, and bam, everything I said can be yours. The catch is that technically, my method is "vanilla", requiring no download to achieve it.

I believe this is already noted on the Making money guide. --0icke0 (talk) 09:28, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Discount Card

Possibly, add a buy price that shows how much the item is worth with the Discount Card equipped. I think it would be helpful.

It's a flat 20% discount, the math isn't that difficult. It's not feasible to calculate out every instance of a percentage on the wiki. Gearzein (talk) 01:11, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

i deleted my game data by accident and was hoping there were some gamers out the on xbox that could help me with some donations comment gamer tags

The wiki can't provide you with any technical support and isn't a place for social gatherings. You'll have to consult the official discussion forums for help like this. Gearzein (talk) 22:14, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Crafting Recipe Protection

Crafting recipe pages are some of the most commonly debated and vandalized parts of pages, which is nonsense because they nearly never change. I'm considering emulating the way NPCs handle names and moving crafting recipes to their own protected subpages. Is anyone aware of any reasons why this is a bad idea, or does anyone have any objections or alternate solutions? If not, I'll begin implementing it in a few days, as well as looking into its viability for other contested but nonvolatile page elements such as weapon and armor stats. It's probably not worth doing for every infobox on the wiki but I'm at least considering doing it for high-traffic weapons and items. Gearzein (talk) 13:40, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I've implemented this for the Terra Blade. I checked it on my phone to be sure it displayed properly on mobile devices, but if anyone has any problems with the page displaying poorly or being too slow or anything, let me know. Gearzein (talk) 11:57, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
The crafting recipe protection works :). Just comes up with {{/crafting} }.Cooly9 (talk) 10:01, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Not sure whether this is anything to do with you, but on my mobile device the Honey Comb page is being wierd. I noticed the crafting recipe is in a new, better, format but then I noticed that the collapsable sections are just plain text, and I cannot edit the page. What is going on? Cooly9 (talk) 09:56, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
The above method is it working as intended. Honey Comb appears to be an anomaly in several ways- apparently it's using the old Template:Crafts template rather than the Template:Crafting recipe that every other page uses. It's just a barebones table on PC though and doesn't include any collapsible areas. Checking on my phone, it does appear to be locked- I'll take a look at the protection settings and see what's up. Gearzein (talk) 14:36, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Odd. It appears that many pages are unable to be edited from mobile devices, at least while not logged in. Some became editable after expanding all sections and scrolling to the bottom, but attempting to edit only provides a login prompt. The page isn't protected or anything- it's either something with the Abuse Filter (unlikely), something weird with mediawiki (highly likely), or something going on over at Curse. I don't use the mobile version of the wiki and couldn't say what's going on off the top of my head, but I'll be looking into it. Gearzein (talk) 14:47, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Golem Strategies Page

It has come to my attention that the Golem strategies page has become a bit, messy, so to speak. People are; firstly, trying to advertise themselves by saying, for example if I were to do it; Cooly9's Amazing Melee Tactic. Then with half the strategies it is the same one being repeated over and over again. The people who write most of them don't even know when capitol letters are used! What is your opinion on this? Cooly9 (talk) 07:19, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I was looking at the page, did a few edits to the general info and then looked at the rest. I also think that the strategies are all about the same, too detailed and most could be shortened to one sentence. I would gladly help you to rewrite the page, but I feel bad about removing other people's contributions. Did you talk to anyone about the guide? Is it okay to do a revision like that?
The guide project is being started over, because all the guides are like that. These personal advertisements are entirely unnecessary. At some point Curse is going to be making some kind of video guide for them, but in the interim, please feel free to do whatever is necessary to clean them up. Gearzein (talk) 15:27, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Addition to main page & update

It would be great to add the Giant Tortoise to the Hardmode enemy section, and Undead Miner to Normal. Both are missing. The section could also use an alphabetizing. Looks wonky as hell w the Giant Fungus Bulb in the C's, Mummy in the D's. Some other names are also off. Next, I like the consolidation work ya did w Enemies on the Main page (slimes, mummies, etc.). 67.183.29.146 05:19, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

I have no problem alphabetizing what is already there, but you may notice, there are way more than just those two enemies missing. If all were added, you can imagine the page would get quite long. Chrisf1020 (talk) 05:55, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

How to Help guide updating?

I'm new to this wiki in terms of being a member and helping out, so I'm not the best at coding for the time being. My question is: can someone update the "How to Help" guide a bit to I Claude a more detailed description on how to add images? The paragraph there nor the page that is referred to there helps me with any problems or step by step how to input an image and it actually works so it displays. I tried to do "The Blade of Grass" page and add a demon altar jpeg image there but it doesn't acually display the image. Can someone help? Glowbomb12 22:29, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Honey Comb damage

Does anyone know the base damage of a bee released by the Honey Comb and how many bees are released (between x and y)? Also, there is some confusion in the article. The first paragraph mentions it releases "several bees" but in the Notes it says that "Only one bee will appear (...)".

Note about "best modifiers"

Articles on modifiable items tend to contain a short intro note about which modifier is the "best" obtainable for that item. This information was added to let people know the highest-value modifier than can possibly be applied to the item. Some people see these passages as strategic recommendations, but they are not. They are solely intended to communicate the technical limit on how valuable a modifier the item can obtain, which can be helpful info during reforging (avoid continuing to hit "reforge" in the hopes of obtaining a more valuable modifier that is impossible to apply to the particular item). For some clarity, see Modifier#Best Modifiers, which describes where these limitations apply.

Articles (main wiki articles outside of Guide: pages, at least) shouldn't generally contain strategic tips on which modifiers to apply for given scenarios, except perhaps in special cases, and then only under the Tips header.

An exception is Minion-summoning items, where the benefits of the most valuable obtainable magic modifier (Mythical) are mostly lost due to the fact that minions themselves are not magic weapons, and there are no actual summon modifiers yet (though these are apparently coming in 1.3) -- so in those cases we do make the judgment call of saying Ruthless is the "most valuable".

I hope I've explained this at least somewhat clearly. In short, for most articles, the "best modifier" statement is intended to be a cold reading of the technical upper modifier limit, value-wise (ie. coins), as described at Modifier#Best Modifiers. If anyone has tips on better modifiers strategically, they should go under Tips, and only in exceptional cases. Equazcion (talk) 23:05, 27 Mar 2015 (UTC)

Tier page

It would be nice to have a page listing all the various tiers of equipment that gives a rough idea of which are better than others. I would find it very helpful, at least. If there's something like this that I missed, I apologize. Nerman8r (talk) 17:02, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

if you want i don't mind doing this if people will find this useful Vix83 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vix83 (talk • contribs) at 11:12, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
There are already several pages like this for the individual equipment types: Pickaxe, Hammer, Sword, Armor, etc. Equazcion (talk) 12:06, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Character Creation page

Could somebody make this? It would be great, telling about hairstyles and how long your name can be and such. A "Character" page could redirect to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamazeldafan (talk • contribs)

If you have a good enough idea, feel free to try writing it up yourself. There's already pages for most character gen options, like Hairstyles and Difficulty, but if the page is worthwhile and informative then we'll see. I personally don't think it'll work though- it might make a suitable guide page but there isn't a lot to character generation that would warrant a mainspace article. Pages in different Languages

Hello, I just noticed while editing the Zombie/de page that some of the wiki pages in languages other than english are seriously lagging behind on updates and are filled with incorrect data. Could someone help with that? For example, the german zombie page only lists two of the different zombie types in Terraria and includes information that may have been correct at some point, but isn't anymore.Terrariapc1 (talk) 12:03, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of users fluent enough in other languages to bring all the translations up to date; most of the translation projects that are still active have only one or two active users, if that. It's not acceptable to just run them through google translate, as that's usually worse than no page at all, so most of them are pretty out of date. The staff and other users here are more than willing to help out with templates and formatting stuff, but all the text is up to people who speak the language.
If you'd like to keep contributing, though, we really appreciate anything you have to add, even if it's just a couple of lines or some spelling corrections. Having the wiki available in as many languages as possible is an important goal for us, and every little bit helps. Gearzein (talk) 19:19, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. I would like to keep at least the main, basic pages in order, but I only speak English and German well enough to edit those pages. I don't know anybody whose speaks the others and has enough spare time to edit and cares about the Terraria wiki. So, anyone who does speak these languages and happens to see this, please edit too! I just noticed as well that when I'm configuring the drops, if I enter the drop name in english, then the link and the picture file work, but the wiki displays the name in english. How do I get the .png files and links to work while displaying the, for example, german name? Terrariapc1 (talk) 10:53, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
There are a couple of translated templates lying around, but because of the way item names are set up, they all seem to display drops and other items in english. Many templates that refer to an item's picture count on the image being the same name as the page title because of their reliance on . There are a few fixes I can think of for this, but for the moment you might just have to make do and work around it. Gearzein (talk) 16:01, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again. Looks like some people will just have to work with english item names for now. Terrariapc1 (talk) 05:19, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
By the way, when I created a new page in German, (the Spawn/de page) I finished, but when I visited the english site, it didn't say that I could see this page in another language. Did I miss a command I have to enter or is that some sort of bug? Terrariapc1 (talk) 14:22, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Okay. So, the NPC template exists in other languages, as well as the item template, but the crafting template is only available in english, which defeats the entire point of translating in the first place. Can somebody please fix this? Terrariapc1 (talk) 05:52, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
You should probably address these concerns to the admin noticeboard; they'll probably draw more attention there.
As for the problem of having the templates predominately in English, that's a little complicated. The end goal of almost any translation project is to have their own subdomains- the best example of this is the French Terraria Wiki, which this wiki helps out from time to time but otherwise has its own separate infrastructure, userbase and administrative staff. As far as I know, every translation project started at this wiki has either reached that point or failed and fallen to the wayside, and this has so far been the ugly solution to so many templates requiring the page title and image title to be identical. Some templates can be modified to display translated names, but a lot of them are really messily coded, and at the very least it would take time to get them set up. The wiki just isn't structured to be easily translated. Another admin might have some more insight into this, but the best advice I can give you is to translate the text you can at the moment- try to get the German front page as free of redlinks as you can- and see if Curse is willing to let you "graduate"
As far as the translation links, that's fortunately much easier. Just add a translation link of the format de:PAGENAME/de at the bottom of the page, like so. Gearzein (talk) 06:28, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
I really have to thank you now. You've told me a lot of things I would have had trouble finding out or might have never found out. I really wish that everybody on online servers could be this helpful, but there are lots of people out there who just don't care. I'll do the best I can. Terrariapc1 (talk) 08:28, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Hey, I'm back! This time, I have a request: On the page Door/de, could you show me how to get the picture working while also displaying the right name inthe crafting table? I've tried different methods, but it either says " (Picture of Wooden Door)Holztür" or " (Picture of Wooden Door)Holztür.png". Could someone show me please? Terrariapc1 (talk) 14:13, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

i totally understand this problem, the dutch project has most pages not updated since 1.0.6, i think thi is due to having not enoug frequent working people in these languages, i'm the only one working on dutch for example.User:Superstrijder15 10:36 8-6-2015 dutch time

Questionable Redirects

I find it a bit strange that every hook type redirects to the main "Hooks" page, yet other, even more similar items don't. For example, Dual Hook and Ivy Whip both redirect to the same page, yet Copper Broadsword and Tin Broadsword, or Boreal Wood Wall and Palm Wood Wall all have their own, unique pages. I think every hook should get their own page, but the Hooks page should still be kept, as with other general pages like Dyes or Pickaxes. KM100 (talk) 01:56, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

The hooks used to have their own individual pages. They were combined because of the difficult logistics of maintaining individual pages on them, when all hooks share so much intricate information. The vast majority of the info needed to be repeated exactly on each page. If users changed information on one hook page, that information usually needed to be matched up on all the remaining pages; this occurred often and the pages then often became a mess of inconsistency. The Paintings and Developer-reserved items, along with several other item groups, were merged for similar reasons.
Dyes were considered for merging, but that would have been more difficult due to their crafting tables. Currently, the individual dye pages allow players to easily search a dye and see a page listing what other dyes can be crafted from it, or which dyes go into making it. Combining all of this information into a single page for all dyes would be difficult, both on the creation end and for readers afterward.
Combining things like Walls or Pickaxes could be a possibility, but it's not a pressing issue, since each of those individual pages doesn't describe the fundamentals of those item types the way Hooks or Paintings did, and don't fall easily into inconsistency. Equazcion (talk) 02:11, 12 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Well, I find it a bit questionable to not have unique pages because of the way hooks work. Pages like the Enchanted Boomerang don't explain exactly how every boomerang in the game functions; it just says it's a specific type of Boomerang. If there would be a change to the fundamental boomerang programming, the main boomerang page would be the only thing that would need to be changed.
I can definitely understand why paintings and furniture item should get grouped together, since they're all identical, but it seems a bit silly to group all the hooks and wings into a single page despite their differences. But I'm nobody to decide how the wiki should work, so if nobody else thinks it's a good separate them, they shouldn't be separated. - KM100 (talk) 02:53, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
I hear what you're saying. The difference that led to this need with items like Hooks and Wings, versus items like Boomerangs or Walls, is the intricacy of their workings. Before the merges, people would add (for example) notes and tips on individual Wing pages that they didn't realize pertained to all Wings. It became logistically impossible to keep checking for these inconsistencies and move information around as appropriate. While this happens occasionally for things like Boomerangs (someone may report that one travels through one-block-thick barriers up-close, for example, when they basically all do that), it doesn't occur to anywhere near the degree that it did for Hooks or Wings nor create the resulting mess -- presumably because there isn't as much intricate detail to pick apart regarding a Boomerang's mechanics.
I'm open to exploring the possibility of linking the Hooks, Wings, etc. off to individual pages again, but a) I'm not sure that there's a good reason to do so, and b) if we did consider it, we would need to devise some method of keeping the same mess from arising again. Equazcion (talk) 03:12, 12 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Smart Cursor and Auto Select

I just created a new page (Cursor modes) explaining in more detail what Smart Cursor and Auto Select do. I hope that's a reasonable thing to add, because I definitely wanted something like that when I was a brand new player. So now I'm wondering how to integrate it with existing pages. The settings and game controls pages already have incomplete descriptions which seem redundant now. Would it be good remove (for further shorten) those and link to the new page instead? I'm kinda new at wiki editing and don't want to do anything too controversial. P.S. I think I've covered the basics, and then some, but if I've left out any functions for either mode, please help me complete the list. BlueMana (talk) 00:26, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Seems useful enough to me; I know one of the things I looked up when I was first starting was what smart cursor did, only to find little to no information. I've already gone ahead and changed the Smart Cursor and Auto Select redirects to point to the new page, and edited the other pages to match. If I think of anything else I'll go ahead and link it there too.
Feel free to make any changes you feel to be necessary, not just here but in the future as well- there are few mistakes so drastic they can't be undone, so be bold in editing. Gearzein (talk) 00:53, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm sure I'll be more confident as I get a few edits under my belt. BlueMana (talk) 01:38, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Lihzahrd Temple rename

I'd like to move Lihzahrd Temple to Jungle Temple. Near as I can tell, "Lihzahrd Temple" was a name chosen by WelchDrew originally, while the developers always referred to it as the Jungle Temple, beginning right from the 1.2 release notes. The Temple Key tooltip also agrees. There is zero mention of "Lihzahrd Temple" in the game code. All mentions on other pages can be changed via bot and we'd leave a redirect behind just in case. Any thoughts/objections? Equazcion (talk) 04:18, 13 Apr 2015 (UTC)

I'm supporting this, but consider that a quick search of the forums for the terms "Lihzahrd temple" and "jungle temple" reveals that there are nearly twice as many results for the first. While a redirect could fix the surface problem of people looking for the temple on the wiki and not finding it, the lihzahrd brand is strongly entrenched, and such a change could still prove confusing. There is also potential for conflict with Jungle Shrines, though I don't consider that as serious an issue.
All in all though, I don't have any serious objections. There's not enough other structures in the Jungle to cause any serious confusion by removing its association with the enemy type that predominately spawns there. Gearzein (talk) 04:49, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
That the forum widely uses "Lihzahrd Temple" was to be expected, since most of those users get their info from the wiki. I think they'll adjust to the change. I'll put up a dab link at the top of each page to cross-link the Shrine and Temple in case there's confusion. I'm gonna go ahead with the move, just wanted to get at least one opinion from another experienced editor. Thanks. Equazcion (talk) 05:02, 13 Apr 2015 (UTC)
I can see points on both sides. The Temple Key says it open the "jungle temple", but it's not clear if that is intended to name the place, or simply describe it. "Lihzahrd" may not mean anything to you at that point in the game if you haven't read spoilers. Perhaps the page should just be called Temple. It's not like there are any other temples. BlueMana (talk) 05:25, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
I'd agree that "temple" is probably technically sufficient since there are no other temples, but that would still be a little ambiguous to a casual reader; "Jungle Temple" is more descriptive and anyway seems to be more endorsed. It's not completely clear what the intended name is, but many such things aren't. All we have to go on in this case are the tooltips, release notes and other developer comments, which so far point to "Jungle Temple" predominately (near as I can tell). Equazcion (talk) 05:43, 13 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Armor set bonuses

I've noticed the armor pages are often unclear about the distinction between set bonuses and the combined bonuses from individual parts. I'd like to put this in a more consistent format with a clearly labeled "Set Bonus" on everything. I know this can get complicated with the hardmode armors where the helmet changes the set bonus, but I still think we can do better than what we have now. Any thoughts, objections? --BlueMana (talk) 17:26, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

No objection here. The main Armor page could benefit from splitting up that info. It might be difficult to squeeze another column into that table, but if it can be done in a space-efficient way then maybe; or we can just add separate bullet points to each armor set where the set bonuses are split off. It might take some experimenting to see how the info would best fall into place. Equazcion (talk) 17:54, 3 Apr 2015 (UTC)

After experimenting with adding a column, I decided that wasn't feasible. On my 1280 screen (which I assume is a typical mid-low end size) everything got squished pretty bad. So I just added Set Bonus: as a bullet point to each armor that has one, separating it in the cases where it had previously been combined with piece bonus. It's a little untidy, but it was the best way I could think of to present that information. Next up are the individual armor type pages. My thought is that the top-right info box should only show the set bonus (which is already the case for some armor, but it's not consistent). The individual pieces are right there on the same page where you can read their bonuses after all. But if that option is unpopular another approach would be to split it into two lines, Set Bonus, and Total Bonus. What do y'all think? BlueMana (talk) 18:50, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

You did a nice job. It doesn't look all that untidy to me. I think for now the individual armor pages should just show the set bonus in the upper-right infobox. As you say, the individual piece effects are already shown in their individual infoboxes. We could add a separate line to the armor box to total up the piece effects at some point afterward, if people want to do that. Equazcion (talk) 19:29, 16 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Just throwing this out there, because I realize it's a serious undertaking, but has anyone else thought about entirely redesigning the front page? The top third or so is fine, but the whole bottom section where we list as many game entities as we can fit into the table looks really messy. I don't have any ideas in mind for what it could look like, mind, but I've been thinking about how unwieldy the current one is a lot lately for some reason. Gearzein (talk) 10:56, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

It'll get even worse if we try to remain consistent once 1.3 is released and attempt to cram in that new content. An easy measure would be to remove the extensive enemy list, which I think is overkill for a front page. Most of the other stuff is general enough to stay, though I'd maybe prune down the "mechanics" list to remove some of the more generic items like health and mana. Equazcion (talk) 11:13, 17 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Also, could someone add the new bosses into the main page? Thank You! BirchMonkey857 (talk) 7:02 PM, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

The Horseman's Blade

I am a melee player and I am currently trying to get a Horseman's Blade from Pumpking. On the page, it says the use time is 25-29. What does that mean? Is there a definite use time? Also, is Pumpking more likely to drop melee weapons if I use other melee weapons instead of, say, magic weapons? Random info: I currently use a true night's edge. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CenturyWanderer (talkcontribs) at 01:52, 18 April 2015

In the code, the actual useAnimation time for the Horseman's Blade is 26, so its functional usetime should be 25, unless there's some quirk of the weapon I'm not aware of that causes it to require an average to be listed. It's likely someone accounting for modifiers, which is unnecessary.
As for your other question, I'm not aware of any situation in which the weapons you use during a battle influence the items an enemy will drop. Pumpking's drop rates all increase at the same time based on how many waves of the Pumpkin Moon you've cleared. Gearzein (talk) 02:07, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Random Page languages (and the bone page)

Has anybody noticed by clicking the 'Random Page' button often redirects you to a page in a different language? I find that annoying and it happens too often.

Although I am aware that this is fixable by deleting the end of the web address but It is still something that I feel needs fixing.

Also, I think that there should be something added to the page describing the bone item. Playing the console version (Don't know if this is just on that version) If you throw bones onto the ground at fast speeds you can often duplicate the bones so I think that should be noted.

Thanks for reading.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.21.185.105 at 20:37, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

The random page issue is something we've been attempting to address. The foreign language pages you're arriving at are part of translation projects that start out here, at the English version of the wiki. I got Gamepedia to install an extension that is supposed to allow us to filter those pages out when Random pages are chosen, but there seems to be some technical issue with it that they are still trying to sort out. I too hope this will get fixed.
The Bone issue you describe sounds like a bug, and the policy here is to leave bugs out of wiki articles. You can report game bugs at the forum. Equazcion (talk) 20:56, 18 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Hi, does anyone know the any of the developer's email, or some way I could send a message to them?

I don't know of any contact info myself. If you have a game suggestion or bug to report, it's best to use the forum: [1] Equazcion (talk) 02:18, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Lost item/update dilemma

The lost item: Hi. I am a long-term Terraria player, but lately I have been having some doubts over some things, and I have recently lost a horseman's blade. It happened like this. I was fighting through the pumpkin moon, and than I kill a pumpking, and I get a horseman's blade (woo-hoo!), the sword I had been searching for for a LONG time! But just as I start swinging it, and as soon as I saw the pumpkin heads come onto the screen, the game literally just cut out. No lag before it quit, no freeze, no blackout, it just kicked me, and then the game wouldn't open again. I have never downloaded viruses (I check regularly), I haven't damaged my device in any way, and have never done anything else that may have led to this. When I finally got back on, I literally had every other thing from that pumpkin moon (spooky wood, stake launcher, spooky twig, etc) but NO HORSEMAN'S BLADE! It's almost as though the game selectively removed it. I am a melee player, and it took me a long time to get this weapon (Not to mention legitimately), and it seemed like the best weapon I had. But it's gone now, and I'm very frustrated/upset. Does anyone know what caused this, if there's a glitch associated with this weapon, or more importantly, any possible way without hacks that I could get it back??😰 Thank you for your time.

Update dilemma: Hi, me again, I have recently been reading Terraria reviews (iOS) with the latest bug fixing patch. It sounds great, with things like making the truffle spawn, allowing reforges, etc. But the problem is...More than the majority of the reviews are complaining about the update, with glitches such as character wipes, world corruption, going into a piggy bank/safe and finding 1000+ dirt where biome chest items once were...bottom line, they say don't updat if you can avoid it. I still have 1.2, and have not updated yet. Should I:

A) Risk getting the update and maybe lose my true swords (originally horseman's blade), turtle armor/dragon, etc.

OR

B) Stick with 1.2 until the patch either gets fixed or a new one comes out — Preceding unsigned comment added by BloodVsWater (talk • contribs) at 06:35, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

This isn't really the right place to go for technical support. You might have better luck on the official forum. But I do know that the game saves your progress periodically, so it makes sense the last thing you got before a crash is what you'd lose. I'm inclined to guess it was just incredibly poor timing, but as I said, maybe someone on the forum will know more. BlueMana (talk) 06:49, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Placed block pictures

So I've been thinking recently that it would be nice to have pictures of more of the blocks in placed form. Especially those that are unusual like pumpkin or glowing mushroom. I know there's a giant picture showing a 2x2 chunk of each block overlapped on the Block page, but it's a bit hard to make sense of. I'm thinking of something like a little hut or similar so you can see how they look when actually you use them. I noticed some pages have this kind of thing as floating image on the right, and others have a gallery section at the bottom. Which is a better way to add something like this? BlueMana (talk) 15:47, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

We've got this: [2] which could be sliced up, I think that would be sufficient -- a square sample, like we have in infoboxes for many block types already. Equazcion (talk) 16:25, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Descriptions here: [3]. Equazcion (talk) 16:27, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Those would probably do. I like the second image is better though, since it shows a square, as well as vertical and horizontal bars. There are some details you can't see on the plain 3x3 square, like the stem on the pumpkin or how the living wood looks like a broken branch on the ends. Of course using the plain square for blocks that don't have those features is an option. BlueMana (talk) 16:51, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Good point, the added little strips/single blocks do reveal some details you wouldn't see otherwise for certain block types. Equazcion (talk) 17:10, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Alright, final question: Using those images, would it make the most sense to go ahead and put it right in the infobox? Even the larger style is only about the same size as the 3x3 wall images, since walls are wider.—BlueMana (talk) 18:27, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah I say put 'em right in the infobox. These don't seem so big as to warrant some separate type of display. PS. I generally use " &nbsp; " (space, nbsp, space) to space the inventory images away from the placed images, which usually seems to look adequate (not set in stone, if you have something better in mind). Another note, if you do upload these individual images, I suggest using a uniform filename convention, adding "(placed)", "placed", "sample", or something to that effect, after the item name. This will simplify certain coding tasks in the future. Thanks :) Equazcion (talk) 18:38, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Sure thing. I figured I'd just copy the format from one of the Wall pages. They don't seem to use nbsp (at least not consistently) but I can certainly stick that in.—BlueMana (talk) 18:55, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Whoever did those wall infoboxes originally seems to have attempted to space the images out that way:
| image =
...but they didn't realize that consecutive spaces are ignored. A space-nbsp-space would have solved that. I might go through the wall pages to fix those too. Equazcion (talk) 19:08, 26 Apr 2015 (UTC)
I altered the item infobox template so it'll automatically display a placed image alongside an inventory image, as long as the placed image is name "File:Item Name (placed).png" or "File:Item Name (placed).gif". So all you'd need to do is upload the placed images with " (placed)" after the item name, and they should show up automatically. Equazcion (talk) 14:07, 27 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Okay, wha'd I do wrong?—BlueMana (talk) 14:36, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

You didn't do anything wrong. The page cache just needed to be purged (which I just did, so your image comes up now). To clear a page cache, you can add "?action=purge" to the end of the URL in your browser. If you want to make this easier, you can go to your User:BlueMana/common.js and add the following line: importScript('User:Equazcion/utcClock.js');. This is a script (an add-on for this wiki only) that will place a clock at the top of each wiki page. Clicking the clock will purge the cache of the current page automatically. Let me know if you need any clarification. Equazcion (talk) 15:09, 27 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Alright, the action=purge method seems to be working just fine. I'll do more later today.—BlueMana (talk) 15:48, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Solar eclipses

It has been months (total, not straight) since I saw my last solar eclipse and I haven't seen one since then... It's been at least 50 Terraria days (I've been counting). I really need the Terra blade as a stepping stone to get other items like the North Pole, horseman's blade, etc. I don't want to AFK farm for too long and risk missing an eclipse... Any suggestions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.221.92.155 at 22:54, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

As far as I know, there's nothing you can do to trigger or increase the chances of a Solar Eclipse. You're better off asking at the forum though. Equazcion (talk) 23:06, 28 Apr 2015 (UTC)

Ore spawn in different world sizes!!!!!!

So im new to this game and there is one thing that is making me so furious about. Some ores don spawn in small worlds but they do in medium, same way the other way around. Not every world spawns with every ore. For example, a world might have Copper Ore but no Tin Ore, or vice versa. As far as the underground cabins go, either you're just unlucky, or you're having technical difficulties, in which case you should head to the forums. --KM100 (talk) 02:36, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Gamepedia emblems

Just one small question (If this is in the wrong place please notify me) on our gamepedia profile pages there is a level and an emblem/medal kind of thing what are those? — Preceding unsigned comment added by C74SS1F13D (talkcontribs) at 09:09, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

It's Gamepedia's points/ranking system, based on how much you participate in their wikis. It's basically meaningless at the moment, just a fun way to keep stats. Equazcion (talk) 13:33, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

Broken Hero Sword

I have a few questions, first, I have the chlorophyte claymore with +18 damage and it already does 96 damage so i use this quite often but I'm wondering if the terra blade is still better? Also I had two broken hero swords and I made the true Excalibur and true nights edge or whatever the second one is, but I need another broken hero sword! I'll be on most of the day today and my PS4 PSN name is: shockshellteipe1. If. By one is willing to give me a broken hero sword id pay a few gold for it. Thanks in advance! Also anyone just looking to mess around add me as well because only a few people in my friends list have this game! — Preceding unsigned comment added by EatWoF4breakfast (talk • contribs) at 15:57, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

You're best off asking these questions at the forum. Equazcion (talk) 16:07, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
Yes, the Terra Blade has higher speed, damage and knockback. BloodVsWater (talk) 23:21, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
A quick search for Terra Blade and some math would've revealed this (legendary terra blade comes out to around 101- this took me about four seconds on my calculator). As Equazcion said, discussion and debate of these questions belongs on the forums- this noticeboard is specifically meant to deal with issues and policy on the wiki, not field questions about gameplay. There is a giant notice at the top of this page to clarify this, and making it any larger or more noticeable runs the risk of becoming comically condescending. Even so, many of these questions don't even need to be redirected there, as actually using the wiki for its intended purpose would make their answers pretty plainly obvious. Unfortunately, the developers don't read this wiki, and we can't comment on their development cycle, as we don't know it. PvP classes page

Has anyone noticed that some of the more recent PvP class additions have become a bit, loose? One of them doesn't even explain the effectiveness of their strategy, and several have quotes like "YOU WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE" or "THIS IS A VERY GOOD LOADOUT". And several of these people don't even know where to capitalize or even spell certain items correctly (clorophyte, or ademantite for example)! I really don't feel like going back and making changes to every grammatical error I find. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BloodVsWater (talk • contribs) at 14:38, 16 May 2015

Yeah, several of the guides pages are lacking in content or quality, mainly because they're not concrete. Unlike other pages, none of the guides' info can be "checked" as lots of people have different playstyles and find different methods far more effective than others. The guides pages could definitely still use some cleanup, so any help is appreciated. While you still should respect the content uploaded by authors, feel free to remove (or embellish on) some of the classes that don't explain why they're effective. --KM100 (talk) 14:51, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
I still think it'd be way more effective to just delete all of the pages that cover "character classes". These are entirely player created and most seem more like a personal theme or aesthetic than actual strategy, almost as if they're a loophole through the inability to just show off your characters normally.
Of course, I'd rather these have suitable replacements before this, as we do need actual guides on viable strategies and weapons that fit together well in as provable a way as possible (like no Scourge or other homing weapons for pvp). These guides don't need cleanup, though- they need a complete page-one rewrite. I've started working on some but I don't have the time I used to nowadays. Gearzein (talk) 20:49, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Yeah. Oh, and another problem is that some people aren't even making new strategies; instead, they're editing better-written classes and making errors there, too! BloodVsWater (talk) 00:36, 18 May 2015 (UTC)BloodVsWaterBloodVsWater (talk) 00:36, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

As I've said before, I think crowdsourced strategy guides are a flawed concept from the get-go. You could clean them up or rewrite them completely, but the same sort of problems (precisely the types described above) will crop up again over time. I'm hoping that if/when the Curse/Gamepedia strategy videos are introduced, they will at least provide some solid source material that everyone can refer back to when editing guide pages, for at least some sense of consistency. Equazcion (talk) 01:20, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
I'm reluctant to publicly discuss the progress (har har) made on the Curse-made tutorials since their proposal but to be frank, it may be more prudent to start taking action against this on our own terms. I don't know what action, honestly. I've been trying to police the guides a bit and hold them to some kind of standard, but that's punching fish in a barrel at best. I'm hoping that a combination of well-written, article-style tutorials and persistent curation will ultimately make them fall into some sort of place. We're probably pretty low on Curse's totem pole as far as official video content goes, so I'm equally reluctant to press them for results, but we're smart enough to manage the content here ourselves. Plantera Strategies page

Just like what Cooly9 said, the Plantera strategies page is morphing into a page not unlike the previous Golem page, with entries like "Example's amazing Example tactic". What, if anything, should I do, or should I leave major edits like this to people in a higher position of authority? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BloodVsWater (talk • contribs) at 02:14, 18 May 2015

General wiki rules apply to guides as well. If you see that kind of stuff and feel like you can deal with it, go ahead and clean it up. If your rewrite's good, then it's good; if not, someone else will come along and fix it. As stated above, though, guides are in kind of a weird state so don't worry about it too much.

Profile Pages

This is (I think) the first time I have used the noticeboard so tell me if i'm doing something wrong. Hello there, I was just looking at my profile page and saw something saying level 44 (Currently) and something else above it. I feel it has something to do with the number of edits/contributions i've made on this wiki but then I see that on someone else's page they have about 10 more contributions than me but is only level 14. Huh. C74SS1F13D 07:12, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

It's the Gamepedia leveling system, some sort of social interwiki contribution tracking thing. It's meant to be a fun aside thing that measures your progress as a wiki editor and contributor, but I've honestly never been able to make heads or tails of how it's actually measured. I was level zero for about six months then shot up to like 50 or so overnight a few weeks ago. Admins also have the means to grant or revoke wiki points for individual contributions, and Curse staff get on your case if they're concerned that you might be gaming the system to get more of them, but I don't know what they're for. It's just a bit of harmless embellishment, don't worry too much about it. Gearzein (talk) 07:26, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Ohh ok so I can delete this section of the noticeboard now? C74SS1F13D 07:29, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Just leave it, it'll get pushed to an archive at a later date. Gearzein (talk) 07:48, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Eye-Ball

Hey guys I created a new page about a future enemy called eye-ball may be included in a update please add one of those cool tables with stats of enemies Thanks in advance! Here is a link Eye-Ball to go on page to edit— Preceding unsigned comment added by Paladin2004 (talkcontribs) at 21:52, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Where did you see this possible future enemy, and where did the name "Eye-Ball" come from? We can fix the page up with stats tables etc, but unfortunately there shouldn't really be a new page set up yet for this enemy if we only just have a glimpse of it somewhere with no name etc to go on. A mention on the Upcoming Features page might suffice. Thank you for contributing though! Equazcion (talk) 22:13, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
I think this page's creation is way premature, even for a spoiler item. There's not even consensus that it's an enemy in places where it's being discussed, and I've seen the term eye-ball used exactly twice to describe it. Since nothing is known about it, this page really only invites conjecture and speculation by attaching a fan name to it. Gearzein (talk) 03:46, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

What are tools?

Discussion moved from Talk:Tools#What are tools? -- Equazcion (talk) 15:38, 18 Jul 2015 (UTC)

It would be nice to have an item class to group the pickaxes, axes, and hammers together (and their various alternates) -- which I would say are the actual "Tools" in the game -- separate from the other more miscellaneous items, like water buckets, hooks and pink unicorn keychains. In crafting an accurate intro section for that page I was recently forced to use the phrase "a loose association" -- since it really describes a bunch of things that don't belong together.

Aside from the technical inaccuracy, it makes for some inconsistent remarks around the whole wiki, as in when speaking of "tools" being required to remove placed things; the majority of the word's uses are referring only to the things that break tiles.

We'd need to possibly come up with a new name to group the remaining items under, not that they necessarily require a parent grouping, but for the "type" infobox item. That could simply be "Misc usable" and lead to a "Miscellaneous usable items" page, or a simple category page. Equazcion (talk) 11:58, 29 Jun 2015 (UTC)

Due to the classification of such items as the Shadow Orb as a "Light Pet", I believe a rethink may be necessary on the light tools section under miscellaneous and possibly the entire miscellaneous section.Poggle566 (talk) 19:25, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Music Box (PS4 version)

Music Box

On the console version, the (Snow) and (Ice) Music Boxes are opposite what is captured on the wiki page. Same with Music Box (Boss 4) and Music Box (Boss 5).

I took screenshots of each, as seen below. KM100 suggested "it would probably be better to have the name switched instead of the info (such as Snow (Pc only.png), Ice (Console only.png)), or a simple note describing how they're switched. Having all the info and links listed twice with a ton of icons becomes quite confusing." I posted the proposed results on the Terraria Wiki:Sandbox page, but I'm not sure if that looks acceptable. I'd appreciate any feedback on this, so the proper changes can be made to the page.

Thanks in advance. --NibKing (talk) 19:19, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

It looks good to me. Although it extends the list, I think it's much clearer to list the versions separately like this. I added a footnote to your sandbox version to tie the info together and explain the existence of duplicates. Equazcion (talk) 19:44, 19 Jun 2015 (UTC)
I'm just gonna copy/paste what's in the Sandbox then. Glad you added the notes, because I wasn't sure how. --NibKing (talk) 20:07, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Version categories

This was sparked by an old argument begun originally by User:Dxos3, which he recently brought up again at my talk page.

The issue is that a console player, for example, has no place to turn in order to see a straight listing of content available on their platform alone. We have Category:Console content, but this is populated only by console only, Desktop-Console only, and . The Console content listing is therefore missing most of the content available in the console edition, ie. the content that all versions contain. One could argue that a console player can easily determine which items they will and won't have access to, but some players may wish to see a browsable list of everything available on their platform alone, without having to click other things and be disappointed by a "pc-only" message.

User:Dxos3 originally wanted an organized page with sections and graphics, but this proved to be somewhat unfeasible -- it would need to be created manually (it was started at one point but languished and was eventually deleted), and even if done initially would likely (I think) end up deteriorating.

Since we already maintain those "____ only content" banners pretty diligently, filling out these categories with their missing content seems like a good compromise. I've added an "allversions=yes" parameter to our infoboxes, which would add all-version content to all the content categories (eg. Category:Console content would then list all content available in the console edition). I also created all versions for use on pages with no infoboxes, which does the same thing.

I may be able to mass-add these parameters/templates to the necessary pages via bot. I wanted to present this here first for comment. If you have thoughts on whether or not this should be done feel free to say something. Equazcion (talk) 13:51, 20 Jun 2015 (UTC)

My only question is how mechanics and other pages will be handled. Pages like Fishing will be listed in the PC Version category because of their "____ only content" banners, but will core mechanics like Defense end up on the page, or is their inclusion (or lack thereof) even something to be concerned about? Regardless, it seems like a good idea, and would definitely help some users who want an absolute list. --KM100 (talk) 04:48, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
I think an initiative like this should be limited to ID-tagged entities like items and NPCs; I feel it goes without clarification that most mechanics are in all versions of the game unless specified, and those that are would hopefully remain pretty limited (I can't think of any other than fishing itself). That said, I think it's a much more solid idea than the original proposed page of links, and generally endorse both better use of categories and fewer dedicated list pages across the wiki. Gearzein (talk) 09:24, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Now THIS, THIS is a compromise! Thank you so much for listening, I appreciate it. I think this method would be very beneficial to everyone especially with the advent of 1.3 messing everything up. I think console players would love a category page like this and the associated parameters that go on there wiki pages. However, I do think that the category should be very accessible from listing it in a place where players can just click a link and it will take them to the category page. And graphics should be added on the category list IN MY OPINION... I do warn though that it will take some time to fill in the rest of the pages as currently there is only 134 pages listed on there...User: Dxos3

Console/mobile history

Adding to this and maybe a really good idea here but in all the items (yes I know it would be an insane amount of work at this point) if we can start adding to the version history the version of which it was introduced to console and mobile as well? Below is just a quickie example. Console/mobile version pages can also be created just like the pc versions to make it to where players can still reference to them directly by page or when chatting in talks about when items came in or such by adding the version tags to their posts.

slight note on below: I know my formatting is horrid but its early in the morning and cant really think of everything.

-- History --

  • {Console_Version}
  • 1.06: Introduced
  • {Pc_Version}

DragoHanter (talk) 16:28, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

That's an entirely unrelated suggestion, so I've moved it to its own section here -- but yeah the console/mobile histories could be better organized and perhaps separated. Equazcion (talk) 17:08, 20 Jun 2015 (UTC)

Bug Policy

I've been thinking about the "no bugs" policy on this wiki. I wasn't here before the policy, so I may not fully understand the reasons for its existence, but I think it's too strict. The PC version at least, currently has mercifully few serious bugs, but with with imminent release of a major new version, it's entirely possible there will be some new ones. In particular, I think there should be some allowance for documenting bugs which are both harmful (as opposed to exploitable or just funny) and reproducible. Like if (totally made up) using the new multi-chest quick sort near two piggy banks destroys the items that should be stacked there, I think it would be appropriate to warn people about that until it got fixed. Is this worth considering, or is it better to cross that bridge when we come to it?—BlueMana (talk) 04:49, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

I didn't voice my concerns here either, because by the time I knew of the policy it was already long-since enforced. But, I definitely agree that it's getting too strict. It's starting to become more of a pain to remove the bugs that everyone keeps listing (such as the temple door bomb glitch, or mismatched npc quote glitches) then it is to remove the bugs that are completely unsourced and probably made up. Obviously, some restrictions need to stay in place, so there aren't "Bug: starting up the game might delete all your items!" posts everywhere, but a "remove nearly everything that isn't 100% intended" policy is starting to get tiresome. --KM100 (talk) 05:07, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
(edit conflict) See here for the discussion that led to the rule. It explains the reasoning. In short, bugs are largely anecdotal -- ie. unverifiable, could be fabricated, and would always nevertheless remain in articles forever, since it also couldn't generally be verified whether or not they were fixed. Bug lists got very long and were mostly useless. That said, the most prominent bugs can be posted, ie. those the developers have openly discussed, or those that are detrimental, consistently reproducible for everyone, and warrant warning players against behaviors that would trigger them and resultingly damage their world or player files. As far as exploits go (the ones that haven't been discussed by the developers), they can be a slippery slope and lead to a decline in wiki articles to cheat forum status. It might be tough to craft rules regarding which of them can and can't be posted so as to avoid that eventuality. I'd be open to re-examining it though. Equazcion (talk) 05:13, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)
The current bug policy does do a good job on preventing unverifiable bugs from being posted, the problem are those people who don't read the policy (or believe their bug is an exception to it) continue posting glitches. It gets pretty irksome when I have to constantly undo the same mobile version glitches that I can personally verify (and have videos documenting them). I do think that major exploits (e.g. duplication glitches) should stay off the wiki for the most part, but I feel as if easily-repeatable or verifiable dangerous glitches should still be allowed to stay.
I agree that it'd be hard to get a policy that specifies exactly what can and cannot be posted, though, and it'd be even harder to get everyone to follow it, so I'm fine with waiting until further word. --KM100 (talk) 05:29, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
One block to that may at one point have been that most of the bugs you're describing, ie. those that everyone experiences, were confined to mobile, and our consistent trusted editors were all PC players who couldn't verify them. If you wanted to personally be the gatekeeper for mobile bugs, we could start allowing those that everyone would undoubtedly notice and feel a need to post, based on your judgment. Bug reports still wouldn't serve much of a purpose here, but not having to perpetually revert them could be reason alone to allow the ones that keep getting reported and can be verified by someone trusted. I won't take it upon myself to say this should be done though, I'm just putting it out there as one possibility for discussion. Hopefully others will chime in on that or other possible solutions. Equazcion (talk) 05:40, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)
I think we've come pretty far in six months, enough to have trusted regular editors who can confirm whether widely-reported bugs in certain versions are actually true. The policy is ignored enough as it is- with the upcoming increase in traffic, we'll have a lot more people coming through to report that certain things don't work as intended- but fortunately, with a large enough sample it should be a lot easier to weed out false positives and nonsense.
Additionally, I voiced my concerns at the time that the possibility of bugs becoming long-term functionality still existed, and unfortunately that seemed to come to pass, as many bugs remained in the mobile versions for a very long time, particularly the rarity of Vitamins and similar debuff-immunity items. The Ankh Charm and associated items are very common and high-profile accessories for players of all types, and unfortunately I'd have to admit that as a wiki, we failed in our primary responsibility of conveying accurate information to players for a distressingly long period of time. It's worth considering letting up on the policy a little bit. Bugs definitely need to be controlled and vetted in some way before they're placed in public view, but it's looking strongly like the effects they have on game functionality can't just be ignored or deferred elsewhere- especially if everyone's encountering them. Gearzein (talk) 06:04, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
These posting will be in public view immediately, as people post bugs to whichever article they feel they apply to. Preempting bug postings by directing people elsewhere via an interface message has not, as we've seen, been completely effective (although it has cut down on bug postings drastically, I think, if you compare to the volume we used to get). We could move posted bugs off to a temporary holding page for verification as they come, but that's not much better than reverting, as we would still need to perform the move each time, and people will still re-post the same bugs to the articles after they're removed, since they will not know this had already happened.
Once we accept that people will be posting bugs in public view immediately: Our choices are whether to revert them or let them be. It's a nice ideal to say we can simply allow bugs that most of us regulars think are accurate and widespread, whilst reverting others that we don't, but in practice that doesn't seem like it would be quite as simple as it sounds (in my mind). It would be difficult to revert some bug postings on the grounds that "I haven't seen this so widely reported yet and/or I think most of us wiki regulars haven't experienced this bug yet and/or I don't think this bug is as important as the others you can see we've allowed; so I'm removing it" (an exaggerated way of putting it, just to illustrate the potential difficulty and the way those reverts might be interpreted, rather accurately, despite any careful wording we would choose).
Whichever solution we put into practice should include some way to show consistency, for example via a policy, or an individual decision-maker to appoint per platform, or else hold a discussion for each new bug that appears, hope that several people participate each time, and then have that saved discussion to point to as rationale for reverting a particular bug in the future. Equazcion (talk) 06:45, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── That said, I made that rather long reply late at night and may have overcomplicated things. I agree a bug like Ankh Charm ingredients being rarer than intended (if that was the bug you refer to) is something that should be on the wiki if true. It's one of the rare examples, though, of a useful bug report as far as the wiki is concerned. I almost never see bugs like that posted, ie. important malfunctions that could cause wasted time and headaches if players aren't made aware. I actually don't remember seeing anyone post this particular bug. If it's accurate then it's good that we're discussing it now and can decide to allow it on the page. However, the current bug policy would actually already allow for this particular example. The remaining question is still whether not to revert the more minor glitches, misquotes, and exploits in the future, and if so how to decide practically which stay and which go. Equazcion (talk) 13:30, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)

So it sounds like the standard I suggested (harmful and repeatable) is closer to current policy than I realized. Perhaps all that is needed then is better clarity about when it's allowable to post bugs. What if there was a rule that bug reports must include a link to a TCF thread where the bug in confirmed either by a staff member or a clear consensus of users?—BlueMana (talk) 14:42, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
I think that's actually a pretty good idea. Harmful, repeatable, and including a link to confirmation or consensus at the official forum; and in the policy I suppose I'd explicitly specify that "harmful" includes things that merit warning in order to help players avoid a severe annoyance, as in the Ankh Charm example. What do we all think of that? Equazcion (talk) 17:34, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)
PS. We just got another one of these. As a separate issue, are we still addressing the possibility of allowing exploits or minor bugs that get posted perpetually? Equazcion (talk) 17:51, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)
This sounds workable- it's largely the same policy we had previously but the meaning of "verifiable" is hopefully clear enough to act on. As for the door of the Jungle Temple, I was under the impression that was fixed, but even if it's still around, it could be considered to present somewhat of a risk to new players who may try to breach an otherwise indestructible structure before they're prepared. If phrased properly- as a warning similar to the one that Lihzahrds spawn prior to Hardmode rather than an exploit or sequence-break- it'd be worth considering. Gearzein (talk) 19:57, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
They announced it was fixed on Google Play and iOS. Amazon still doesn't have that update, so I suppose it could be Amazon users who are still reporting it; or else they thought they fixed it but they didn't. In any event, we still don't really know how to handle repeated minor bug reports in the future. KM100 did bring up the point that it gets tiresome reverting the same bug repeatedly that he can personally attest to. I suppose we'll have to continue doing that for now though, since no consistent alternative is apparent yet. Equazcion (talk) 20:52, 26 Jun 2015 (UTC)

Global file usage

Greetings from Russian wiki. I want to ask you about the service (absolutely all). When you delete files on your wiki (English section), please check the use of the file in the other language sections of Terraria Wiki. This is necessary to avoid the presence of red links. If you do not already know, our wiki uses a centralized storage system overall. This means that any file on the base (English) wiki can be used in all sections of the same wiki. For example, image of File:Blue Slime.png used in the Russian wiki thanks to this system, although Blue Slime was not uploaded on the Russian wiki because it is called a direct linkas if it were uploaded - ru:File:Blue Slime.png.

Since the global usage of the file is not displayed on the English wiki, then kindly requested to check each file before deleting when used in any section Terraria Wiki.

There is another option, dear members of the Curse, set on the wiki this extension: mw:Extension:GlobalUsage. This will allow all users to monitor file usage by other language sections.

Again, administrators and bureaucrats, if you delete a file in the English wiki, please before deleting move this file in all language sections where it is used, so that no unforeseen red links. Equazcion, please do this kind of mandatory rule for all administrators. If the extension is not set, then let everyone removers checks every file on each section. Section is not too much, it will not take much time.

Thanks, good luck in filling articles with the upcoming update. Alex Great talk 05:27, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

mw:Extension:GlobalUsage is probably ideal. For now I wrote a script that will let us check foreign uses of images. The new link, "List Foreign Uses", should show up for everyone at the top of image pages. If it's not there yet, do a hard refresh (ctrl-F5). Equazcion (talk) 12:04, 28 Jun 2015 (UTC)
Very useful. Thanks for support. Alex Great talk 12:51, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
For File:Wandering Eye (2nd form).gif doesn't work. Alex Great talk 12:56, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
No problem :) Should be fixed now. Ctrl-F5 to refresh javascript. Equazcion (talk) 13:07, 28 Jun 2015 (UTC)

Mirrored images

I created a new template: Template:Mirror. If the community will take it, for all the images, you can specify a single standard that all such pictures should look to the right by default. I.e. some NPC files should be reuploaded (to the right). If someone is not a mirror, then the idea is failure. Alex Great talk 13:41, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Or maybe specify a single standard with looking to the left. I mean that all the images looked in one direction only. Alex Great talk 13:45, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Pedguin stream

For whoever happens to be paying attention right now:

We don't normally do this here, but I felt I had to point out that Cenx and possibly Redigit are currently offering additional 1.3 info at Pedguin's 1.3 changelog analysis stream, going on right now: http://www.twitch.tv/pedguin. Equazcion (talk) 14:41, 28 Jun 2015 (UTC)

Achievement section in related pages

Hi. I'm wondering, is there a guideline to follow about listing related achievements in a page ? I mean ... For example :

  • The Twins : by killing them, you'll earn "Ophthalmologist" (Xbox, PS3), or will contribute to "Buckets of Bolts" or "Mecha Mayhem" (PC 1.3).
  • Blood Moon : if you survive the night, you'll earn "Red Moon Rises" (Xbox, PS3, iOS) or "Bloodbath" (PC 1.3).
  • Angler (but also fishing) : linked to "Servant-in-Training", "Good Little Slave", "Trout Monkey", "Fast and Fishious", "Supreme Helper Minion!" (PC 1.3).

There is already a section about history of changes, but nothing about achievements. With the arrival of 1.3, it will be more important to list those ... --ChoirJ (talk) 21:56, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

There's no current guideline or consistent practice, as far as I'm aware. I can't see any reason not to include them on pages for items/characters that directly trigger them. Equazcion (talk) 22:16, 28 Jun 2015 (UTC)
If you were asking how they should be listed, I would just add an item to the Notes section of each page. Perhaps later we'll devise a template and/or separate section if people think that has become necessary. Equazcion (talk) 22:19, 28 Jun 2015 (UTC)

So what's the plan for the Wiki and 1.3?

1.3, being the final main update and a huge one at that is certain to cause some manner of chaos when released. So with two days ahead, there is a wonder if there is some manner of contingency plan in place to reduce the mass of crossfire edits and more. 76.125.252.80 02:40, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

There's no need for any such panic. I know I, at least, won't just be regulating these edits, I'll be making them. All of our sysops are regular users, and all of our users are players, and we're all here because we use this resource frequently and want to contribute to it. That's how a wiki's meant to work- high traffic can never really be a negative, because the majority of users are here either to read or fill in gaps with what they know, and the ratio won't meaningfully change just because the volume does. The plan is to continue as usual. Gearzein (talk) 03:35, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
Very well. I just wanted to pop in, shout 'Yellow Alert, Shields Up!', to make sure there was at least something in place. I actually meant nothing by my 'panic' note in the change summary. 76.125.252.80 08:11, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

1.3 pre-release streams

Due to the fact that information from the 1.3 pre-release video streams is not anything we can verify, I'll be continuing to revert and delete this info when no good references are included. However, I'm going to trust that our admins and a few select trusted wiki regulars (you probably know who you are) are posting accurate info. For those editors:

  • Please only create pages or post information for content you saw with your own eyes, or that has already been referenced to a dev posting before.
  • Keep information on new items general, as specifics may be less reliable from merely seeing a video. Remember that item and character stats you see may not represent base stats, as they may be altered my modifiers or other boosts that might not be apparent to the audience.
  • Please also continue to confine 1.3 information to articles exclusively on 1.3 content, rather than updating articles on exiting content to show 1.3 changes.

The purpose of the points above is so that we don't have a bulk of questionable material to sift through later. Of course, once the release happens, everyone can post whatever they find in the game, since the rest of the hive can then verify it immediately (more or less).

None of this applies to the Upcoming features page. That page will be moot in the next 36 hours or so (as opposed to newly created pages for individual items, which will serve as their permanent wiki pages), so I think we can relax the standards at that particular page somewhat. Equazcion (talk) 10:38, 29 Jun 2015 (UTC)

"Future" Flag

It seems one of the biggest problems being faced right now is the persistence of people uploading future content on mainspace articles. Having future features on these articles is definitely a problem, but it seems sort of silly to revert all edits relating to them. So, I think this could handle that:

   <!--FUTURE (Upcoming mechanics) FUTURE-->

All upcoming features on main articles could be flagged with this, until the release of 1.3, when all instances of "<!--FUTURE" and "FUTURE-->" could be removed via bot. This would theoretically hide them until the release of 1.3, and then reveal them with minimum hassle. Now, I'm no bot expert, so I'm unsure if this would actually work or not. Any opinions? –KM100 (talk) 17:43, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

The problem with future changes on main articles at this point isn't just the fact that they don't apply yet, but the fact that we don't know if they're reliable. I've been letting everyone put up new pages for stuff they saw in pre-release streams, and have been tagging those with a template/category for later review. Content within other articles might be a little more tedious to sift through later and verify -- it wouldn't just be a matter of un-commenting it. My opinion is that this should wait til info can be checked right away. While these do comprise most of our reverts at the moment, there really aren't so many of them that it's a remotely serious problem. Equazcion (talk) 17:52, 29 Jun 2015 (UTC)
Alright. I guess flagging everything with these would probably be more work than just reverting them, anyway. –KM100 (talk) 18:10, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Placed blocks images

Since there is a option to display placed walls, how about displaying solid blocks? I have seen it only here so don't really know if someone is working on it or not. Do you think it is a good idea to make such images, I'm personally interested in making it happen – File:Sturdy Fossil (placed).png (I hope this one has better quality than that Hay one). Kvikk (talk)

Image policy amendment for illustrative .gifs

This has been a concern of mine for quite some time, going back as early as the poor quality animation used for the beam sword's sword beam. Having several buffs, minions and pets flying around in a screen capture makes it difficult to determine what the image is trying to convey, and now that none of us are familiar with the items these images are trying to convey, I'm starting to notice how real a concern this was- for example, I don't know if this big goofy floating orange thing in front of the player is part of the Daybreak's attack animation or some other effect.

A good general rule for maximum visibility in animated images is to deactivate familiars and buffs, take off obtrusive armor and animated dyes, and check the lighting and weather before capturing footage to make into a .gif image for use on the wiki. One should also be sure to crop images appropriately to demonstrate the weapon, item or other phenomenon most effectively- the Daybreak example above conveys nearly no useful information to justify its continued use on the page, as it displays only the stock throwing animation and the weapon's normal sprite, not its effective range or a usable rubric of its velocity. Please also ensure that the background is not too busy or flashy. I can't ask everyone to have a distance-marked shooting range in their basement, but please be sure that you're at least filming over a solid color.

Note that this is not an open call to add more .gifs to the wiki- generally, animated images should be used sparingly, for both bandwidth and aesthetic reasons. However, in the event that a concept cannot be conveyed through text, these guidelines can help prevent your images from being tagged for deletion. Gearzein (talk) 13:37, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Yes, these are good pointers all around. Equazcion (talk) 04:21, 5 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Frequent banner drops

Okay, so I've noticed that banners are dropping differently for the new update. It seems that they drop every 50th enemy kill, rather than the 0.4% chance or whatever it was for each enemy. Is this true? Or is it a convenience? If this is true, we should probably start updating the pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.21.189.102 at 17:21, 4 July 2015

This is true and I believe we have been doing that. Equazcion (talk) 04:21, 5 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Should the Hoik have its own article?

What do you guys think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by I3luebits (talk • contribs) at 21:52, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Being that it's a bug exploit, the general rule is that it wouldn't get its own mainspace article. It's mentioned currently at Guide:Travel. It could conceivably have its own guide page, if there is enough to say about it that warrants a separate page. Equazcion (talk) 04:18, 5 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Fix Tax Collector's place

the Tax Collector is a hardmode NPC, not a pre-hardmode one, since you have to purify Tortured Souls (which only spawn in hardmode) to get him as a NPC. Fix this on the main page MamiZa (talk) 00:48, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Events on main page

Currently, the Slime Rain and Martian Madness events on the Main Page of the Wiki are not classified to a platform in particular, even though they are limited to 1.3, which, in turn, is limited to the PC edition of Terraria. What I ask is that someone with the ability to edit the front page will add the indicator that those events are limited to the PC, so as to prevent the transmission of misinformation. If any information here is incorrect, creating a scenario where this change would be a poor decision, and would cause more trouble than leaving it be, please tell me, and I will edit this request or remove it all together. Add them to what? There are already articles for them (Tax Collector, Skeleton Merchant), and those are linked on the Main Page. Equazcion (talk) 04:51, 5 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Add Expert Mode link to Front Page

I've noticed there's not yet a link to Expert Mode on the front page. If someone with the ability could put that in it would be very useful. I think just under the hardmode link would be a good place as it would balance out that table aswell. Thanks in advance.— Preceding unsigned comment added by The mr piggy 22 (talk • contribs) at 05:46, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Upcoming features

I think something should be done with "Upcoming features", it could be misleading for some people cause 1.3 is out now. Not sure what was usually done in such case. And Lunatic Cultist should be added to "Hardmode bosses" section on Main Page.— Preceding unsigned comment added by GJPEV (talk • contribs) at 08:58, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

I agree we need to do something with upcoming features. Probably archive it. For now I've added Lunatic Cultist to the main page, thanks for pointing that out. Equazcion (talk) 09:08, 6 Jul 2015 (UTC)
(edit conflict) This has been kind of low priority given the volume of new content in 1.3 requiring a lot of focus elsewhere, but I agree. I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that the page be cleared for the time being, just to avoid confusion. Once our situation stabilizes we can start compiling developer comments on future updates, particularly Yoraiz0r and Skiphs' plans for an eventual 1.4, but for the moment, even direct developer statements are in a weird state where they might only be future features for a couple of minutes. I do think the page could still serve as a repository for distant mentioned features, similar to how the Minecraft wiki handles mentioned features (but ideally cleaner).
If there's no objection, I'll archive the last revision and replace the page with a short paragraph explaining that there are no plans in the foreseeable future.Gearzein (talk) 09:20, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

1.3 Update page

I asked this about 1.2, and am going to ask again for 1.3. It would be wonderful if there was a page for all things listed visually from "Category:Entities introduced in Desktop 1.3.0.1". I have started a page at User:Blaust/1.3_Update if you want to see an example. It would be great for linking to people who want to know what is new in the game, and to keep track of everything. Feel free to edit my page if you wish, or copy it to your own userspace. Blaust/Bws2cool (talk) 16:30, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Red's Throw drop chance

I've been warring with User:TerraPony over the inclusion of this. I can't find any clue in the source code to Red's Throw dropping from treasure bags, or from anywhere else. I've also done a test opening 2,000 Lunatic Cultist bags and another 500 Moon Lord bags (just in case the boss it came from had some bearing), and did not get a Red's Throw a single time. TerraPony claims to have done a similar test and had it appear after a mere 46 bags.

My own feeling is that the default stance (barring developer input) should be our reading of the source code, unless a multitude of users claim to have gotten this. Right now it's just this one person. I'm hoping to get some input and settle this, so for now I'm holding off on further edits personally til some discussion happens. Equazcion (talk) 20:04, 6 Jul 2015 (UTC)

The Red's Throw simply does not drop from Treasure Bags (or anything else as far as I can tell). At least not in the unmodded steam version. Unless the user provides valid proof or indeed other users report the same it should be considered invalid and removed. --0icke0 (talk) 00:35, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
This looks like it's causing a lot of trouble. Let's call it a bug and leave it at that, ok? I got the Yo-Yo as I was farming pre-hardmode bosses in expert mode. I don't remember the specific boss I got it from, but after it dropped, I went to check the game files to see the drop rate. I was going to add it to the wiki page, but I couldn't find where the bit of code was. With this new piece of information, I edited it in, with the information I already was going to put down. I got it in 1.3.0.1, so it might have been fixed by now. Sorry for the misunderstanding. TerraPony (talk) 21:08, 7 July 2015 (MT)

Snow to Tundra

It's been suggested that the Snow biome be renamed to the Tundra, since the Angler refers to it that way. Near as I can tell, the Angler (and one of his quest items) is the only place the term appears. The source code refers to it as "ZoneSnow", and release notes refer to it as the snow biome [4][5]. If the devs start referring to it as Tundra this might be worth considering but otherwise I'd leave it. My two cents. Equazcion (talk) 03:11, 10 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Also, the biome key for the area is called the Frozen Key, and all the other keys have the appropriate names. it seems that there is as much reason to call it frozen/under ground frozen biome then tundra. Although I think that tundra is a nicer term. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.83.50.18 at 19:43, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
I'm honestly not sure what I think about this, but in the interim I'm thinking it might be a good idea to disable page moves from regular users. A distressing number of moves have happened without any sort of discussion, much less consensus. Gearzein (talk) 03:40, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Hello, sorry for fucking up! Didn't read the arguments of not moving it to tundra, the angler is wrong, who the hell he think he is. --Frenchiveruti (talk) 03:49, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
There were only the two attempts by one user so far, and move-protecting wouldn't have prevented this since he didn't actually move it but copied the text over. I think we're okay for the time being. Don't worry about it though, Frenchiveruti -- we were all new once :) Equazcion (talk) 03:53, 15 Jul 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, it's no big deal. I wasn't personally implicating you or anything, Frenchiveruti. This just happened to come on the heels of a couple of other unannounced moves, but those are also pretty isolated. Besides, the magic of a wiki is that if you do screw up, it only takes a couple of clicks to set it right, so don't worry about it. Gearzein (talk) 04:14, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Ok! Great that you guys aren't mad haha, at least much better than the fellas over Minecraft wiki hahaha, And returning to the discussion, I do think that it should remain called snow biome, and simply redirect from the "tundra" pages, or maybe talk to the devs to fix that thing on the Angler, maybe? --Frenchiveruti (talk) 04:31, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
It doesn't strike me as an error, just a little inconsistency. Maybe they want some characters to refer to certain things differently -- who knows? The Angler might just be an uneducated kid (product of the American education system?) and came up with his own name. All we can do is try to determine the general intended name, or failing that the most accurate/recognizable one. I have to say I do like the term "Tundra", as it's more exotic and wistful (maybe the Angler is an aspiring poet, and this fish thing is just a phase). Unfortunately I've never seen "tundra" used by a staff member, the changelogs say "snow biome", the world creation message says "adding snow", the source code calls it "ZoneSnow"... Equazcion (talk) 04:56, 15 Jul 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, we can totally agree that that guy isn't well educated, he doesn't even say thank you, but the thing is that the game itself tells you that it's the "Tundra", because it places the tooltip between "()", as it were "outside" the conversation that the Angler gives. Frenchiveruti (talk) 04:59, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Personally I don't put any stock in the world creation message; I mean, the message for Crimson is "Making the world bloody", but we aren't going to start calling Crimson the bloody biome are we? :P --Littlebeasti (talk) 23:45, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Site's Skin

I have no idea if this is the right place to ask a question of this nature, so I apologize in advance if not.

Having the wiki open on my second monitor while I play is super handy, but I always have to switch tabs to a darker site because the light theme here is really distracting. I can't for the life of me find a custom CSS to use to make the hydra theme dark. Does anyone know of one, or have some other way to allow me to change my local theme to a dark one?

Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by MaliceFTW (talkcontribs) at 18:14, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

I whipped something up at User:Equazcion/Hydra2.css. You can copy it and place it in your own Hydra.css. It's far from perfect but I think usable. I don't know offhand of any dark themes available for Gamepedia's wikis (hydra is their own custom creation). Equazcion (talk) 19:01, 10 Jul 2015 (UTC)
Totally useable, I really appreciate it!--MaliceFTW (talk) 07:30, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Darts

Now that there are several dart types in the game I believe they should get their own subcategory in ammunition and poison darts should be removed from the miscellaneous subcategory. Sadly I have never edited a wiki before and have no idea how to do this.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.159.6.102 at 04:35, 12 Jul 2015 (UTC)

I redid the ammunition page somewhat and included darts. Also created Darts. Equazcion (talk) 06:32, 12 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Lunar Events renamed to Celestial Events

Someone recently made this move. So far, most of the wiki refers to them as "Lunar Events". If we were to change that, I'd actually go with Lunar Apocalypse, as that's the name in the source code. Although, I think "Lunar Events" is accurate enough, while also being a simpler term for mass use than either of those. Wondering what others think. Equazcion (talk) 17:30, 12 Jul 2015 (UTC)

I'd go with Lunar Apocalypse too, it's more loyal to the source code. But since we already use "Lunar Events" and it's a simpler term... I'd support a name change if it's to Lunar Apocalypse. OdnHarfagre Talk 17:55, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
"Lunar" is both the term in the source code and the name they've been known by for over a year. I'd be fine with the formal name being changed to Lunar Apocalypse, but still prefer Lunar Events as a slightly less formal term, similar to the prevalence of Goblin Invasion as an alternate for Goblin Army. Of course, that may just be a matter of intended corrections moving slowly across the wiki, in which case I'd have to support Apocalypse as the term in the source. Gearzein (talk) 18:30, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
I feel as if "Lunar Apocalypse" isn't used enough outside of the source code. The source code isn't intended to be read by the common player, and "apocalypse" is fairly misleading. The two times the events have been listed in the 1.3 changelogs are as "Lunar Event" and "lunar invasions", so it seems like a gray area until a more official term is given. –KM100 (talk) 18:44, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Add worst modifiers to weapon pages?

I was wondering if people should put the worst modifiers for weapons on their wiki pages. This could be informative, as people most likely don't want that specific modifier. It could be like something too look out for. TerraPony (talk) 20:42, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

The best possible modifiers are noted because players will have to roll for them several times, and there's a chance that people will roll past the best one a weapon can receive without realizing that the best in its category is unavailable to it. Detrimental modifiers, on the other hand, are immediately noticeable and almost universally undesirable, so making a distinction between them has little utility. Gearzein (talk) 21:04, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

Fancy Gray Wallpaper

So I foolishly started changing this, and it occurred to me that I have no idea how to handle a change in spelling between versions. Everywhere Fancy Grey Wallpaper is mentioned also links to its image through item link or some variant thereof, and all those are reliant on the filename matching the displayed item. How would we even go about an item having two spellings between versions? Gearzein (talk) 00:05, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

If we have the old redirecting to the new -- images included -- item link should work for either one. I'm not entirely sure I understand the issue, though. Could you point to a page where this problem arose? Equazcion (talk) 00:11, 14 Jul 2015 (UTC)
I created redirects for the image. Let me know if that solved it. Equazcion (talk) 00:13, 14 Jul 2015 (UTC)
That solved it, thanks. I actually wasn't aware image redirects could be done like that.
Really, the linking problem was secondary to the fact that making those corrections wouldn't adequately represent all versions. If I go through and change every mention of Grey to Gray, that counts out the mobile and console versions, in which the old spelling is still used. It seems minor when I think about it, and it may be less of a problem than I'm making it out to be, but in future cases it could become an issue- for example, if the Flairon got changed to FlaiLron like people were expecting based on references to it in changelogs, then regardless of whether the page were renamed or not, at least one version would still have the name essentially spelled incorrectly until all of them caught up. Redirects could make finding it easier, and notes on the page could note the correction, but the disconnect would still be noticeable. I was just wondering what the correct course of action would be in such a case. Gearzein (talk) 00:24, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
As a side note, I was disappointed about Flairon not getting its correction -- since I was the first one to report the discrepancy in the changelog :) But I digress. Generally we would just make the correction while making sure the old names all still work via redirects, while making notes about the changes for those who wind up where they didn't expect to. Short of creating duplicate pages to accommodate all the different versions, or entire duplicate wikis -- either of which would suffer due to split attention -- this is the best we can do, and it seems workable enough. Redundancy of separate block/wall pages

I was wondering if there was a specific reason as to why block pages and wall pages aren't merged. For example, Shroomite Plating Wall would be merged with Shroomite Plating. In most cases, the wall page doesn't offer much additional information from the block page - the recipes are same for most blocks, and most walls don't offer special effects. I'm proposing a new section titled Wall on block pages, where the item infobox and additional information are located. Alternatively, the item infobox could be placed to the right of the infobox for the block. DoktorFox (talk) 04:53, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

There's no particular reason yet, other than the fact that they're different items and no one's ever suggested merging them before (that I know of). That's not a bad idea though. Block and wall pages tend to be pretty short, the items are quite related and similar, and consolidating might help in maintaining quality (fewer pages = more attention per page, in my experience). This would be a pretty big change though (many pages affected and possibly item listings affected). There's the question of what to name the merged pages, but I guess the suggestion is to use the "block" title and redirect the "wall" title to the block. I'm not sure if that would cause confusion or technical/logistical complications. Equazcion (talk) 05:05, 15 Jul 2015 (UTC)
If a wall section is created on the block page, perhaps the original wall page could be redirected to the wall section? For example, continuing my example from above, the content of Shroomite Plating Wall would be replaced with #REDIRECT Shroomite Plating#Wall, and a Wall section would be created in Shroomite Plating. DPS listings

With the introduction of the DPS Meter, this should be easy to do. I haven't played around with it too much myself as of yet, but having a weapon's DPS could be extremely helpful.

Complications come up with things like guns, which can use different variants of weapons, but that could be sorted out with time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coolum444 (talk • contribs) at 11:45, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Vel'Koz is a champion from League of legends. His ultimate is a beam witch causes continuous high damage to enemy units.(an image is seen here) What is noticable that His ultimate is called "Lifeform Disintegration Ray". Also the last prism is a deathray....(look for it here). — Preceding unsigned comment added by CloudHunterTO (talk • contribs) at 09:20, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

See the statement here. There's no evidence in-game that it's a reference, and too many other claims of reference have been made to codify one as true without a clear developer statement. Gearzein (talk) 14:45, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Not sure if vandalism

Recently KappaPrince(talk • contribslogsblock log) has added this line to the trivia section of the medusa page:

"The Medusa is a prime example of questionable game design, leaving absolutely no room to counterplay and being able to quickly kill a fully geared player through fall damage without any warning, as she can petrify at any time and even off-screen." This is something clearly not fit for an informative wiki.

I'm not sure if i should report this kind of behavior or just revert and hope for the best, And since i don't want to start a revert war i thought it may be better to ask someone else for advice.

Thanks in advance. --Seanos1998 (talk) 22:19, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

It wasn't a blatant attempt to harm the article, which is the definition of vandalism. For now it seems to have been a misguided attempt to add his opinion. If this were done repeatedly and/or across multiple articles, then there might be cause to act. For now the revert was all that was needed. Equazcion (talk) 22:26, 18 Jul 2015 (UTC)

"Obtaining" section

I think this should be added to pages. It would cover the ways to obtain an item. For example, a "Dropped by" subsection which would list the enemies that drop the item, "Looted from" would cover obtaining it from chests, "Bought from" would show the NPCs that sell the item, and the "Crafting" section would become a subsection of this. -MinecraftPhotos4U (talk) 18:23, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

This information is usually in the main text of the page, and textual descriptors in the opening paragraph are already considered redundant on items that are crafted. Crafted items already have recipe sections, with two additional layers of sub-subsections (Recipe/Used in and PC/Console/Mobile Versions), and making them one deeper wouldn't achieve much, as not many items are both craftable and dropped or looted elsewhere. For most strictly dropped or purchased items, this section would only be a single sentence and wouldn't warrant an entire section on the page, and items that are dropped by multiple enemies are usually easily summed up ("enemies killed in the hallow" for souls of light and such).
If this information is absent from a page it should definitely be added to the text, but I don't think there's enough overlap in means of acquisition to make a section dedicated to it outside of crafting, and there's not enough information to fill such a section otherwise. Listing Mobs Expert Health

People have been listing mobs expert health in various different formats. There should be one uniform way to list the expert health of mobs.

Examples of various different forms of listing expert health: http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Eye_of_Cthulhu http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Wall_of_Flesh http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Dungeon_Guardian http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Skeletron

Which form should we use when listing expert health, and should non-boss mobs have their health in expert mode be listed as it is just 2 times it's normal mode health? Powerman321 (talk) 19:25, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

There are many exceptions to the x2 rule (especially for bosses and once hardmode starts). See this for a list I posted recently. I agree that there needs to be a uniform way to display the health, but not sure how. --0icke0 (talk) 19:39, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
A few suggestions have been tossed around on the Upcoming Features talk page but nothing decisive has been put forward yet. I did like KM100's solution, and it kind of reminded me of another suggestion from a while ago that pointed out how WoWPedia handles certain items with multiple sets of stats. I'm under the impression that would require a serious overhaul of how infoboxes are written though. I definitely don't think that just having two sets of data displayed in a single infobox at the same time is a suitable solution though. Gearzein (talk) 19:56, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
Not such a serious overhaul... I managed to write something for this. I put a test up at User:Equazcion/sandbox2. npc infobox is now capable of doing this and I put the javascript into the site default. The way it works is you simply place two complete infoboxes on the page (WoWPedia basically requires the same thing), set one to mode=normal and the other to mode=expert. One box will show in their place with the switch links. The limitation (the one I'm currently aware of, more may likely follow with use) is that you can currently only do this once per article -- If an article has multiple infoboxes with normal/expert differences, the others will need to be handled traditionally for now (ie. cram all the info into the same box). Let me know what you think and if there are any problems. Equazcion (talk) 01:15, 22 Jul 2015 (UTC)
I seem to have missed this when it was functional, but if you managed to get it working then that's wonderful. I do have a few questions about it though.
  • How does this work with transclusions- for example, if it were used on a page with a protected stats subpage like Terra Blade, would the switching still work between pages?
  • Does it support more than two modes? Would it be unreasonable to also consider its use for NPCs and items that have different values between the three major versions of the game? (It may be unwise to use it in this capacity, at least in parallel- PC/Console/Mobile/PC Expert could get messy fast)
Actually I think that's it. Gearzein (talk) 06:07, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
I'm working on a new version and disabled it temporarily. I'm hoping to get it so that you only need to add the changed values in the second infobox, rather than duplicating everything. Transclusions should work fine, but at the moment it's only coded to switch between the two modes. Adding more might be a bit more of a complex thing to implement, and I it would indeed probably be messy logistically (especially once the other platforms get their expert modes...). Equazcion (talk) 06:12, 22 Jul 2015 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── New version is done. The normal-mode infobox should include everything, but the second expert-mode infobox (mode = expert) now only needs to include the items that differ in expert mode. Note that the loot table, if it changes in expert mode, needs to be entered in its entirety, even if only certain items' stats change in expert mode (money= is a separate item and can be left out if it's unchanged in expert). See User:Equazcion/sandbox3 for a test. Equazcion (talk) 06:43, 22 Jul 2015 (UTC)

I had to revert my changes. It caused some kind of display issue on pages with multiple infoboxes. I'll let you know if/when I get this sorted out. Equazcion (talk) 07:28, 22 Jul 2015 (UTC)
...annnd I think I got it now. User:Equazcion/sandbox3. Let me know if you encounter any other display issues with any infoboxes (anywhere).
To reiterate:
  • To use this feature, place two npc infoboxes in the article, one right after the other.
    • One should contain the full info along with the mode=normal parameter.
    • The other should contain the expert-mode info -- only the differing bits -- along with the mode=expert parameter. The loot table, if changed in expert mode in any way, will need to be reentered entirely for the expert-mode infobox.
  • This currently can only be done once in an article. Use it on the main infobox. If other infoboxes on the page require expert-mode stats, they will need to be crammed in the way we've been doing up until now.
Equazcion (talk) 07:51, 22 Jul 2015 (UTC)
Updated again: I've added handling of multiple infoboxes with normal/expert switching. The normal and expert-mode infoboxes are associated via their "name" parameter. Enter the same name for a normal/expert infobox pair. See User:Equazcion/sandbox4 for a test. Equazcion (talk) 09:42, 22 Jul 2015 (UTC)
According to Icke's data dump, Expert values change again in hardmode. We might need a third infobox setting after all... Gearzein (talk) 17:37, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
It might be better to use parentheses for Expert Hardmode values, because it doesn't appear as if drop rates change. For example, 500 (650 in Hardmode). Another copy of the infobox to change one value seems redundant. DoktorFox (talk) 04:45, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
It seems like clicking the same option twice will still switch the mode, but not change the color highlights. (e.g., clicking "Normal" when it is already selected will result in an expert mode infobox with blue highlights.) It's a small issue, but it can get a bit confusing. –KM100 (talk) 23:32, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
I'm having some trouble sorting this out, will let you know when it is. Thanks for letting me know about it. Equazcion (talk) 23:55, 23 Jul 2015 (UTC)
I think I got it done. Do a ctrl-refresh and let me know if there are any further issues. Equazcion (talk) 00:20, 24 Jul 2015 (UTC)
It feels kind of nitpicky to mention, but there are no highlights at all until you switch to expert and then back to normal, at which point items and HP are highlighted in blue. Gearzein (talk) 00:25, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
I only added the highlighting because it wasn't always clear which stats has changed when you clicked a switch link, so the highlighting offered a persistent clue. It's a relatively minor thing though; hopefully everything works and is usable for now. I may add default highlighting at some point. Equazcion (talk) 00:33, 24 Jul 2015 (UTC)
I'm not too happy with the way the highlighting looks on the loot table. I was trying to find some more elegant format for it. If anyone has suggestions feel free to let me know -- just know the change needs to apply to the entire loot table... I don't currently have any way of highlighting individual loot items. Equazcion (talk) 00:44, 24 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Pure vs. Normal

The word "Pure" is used often in the game and in the wiki to describe corruptible blocks that haven't been corrupted, or blocks that have been cleansed. And yet, the word "Normal" is often used to describe these same blocks in the wiki. I propose a standard word to describe these corruptible blocks. Since "Pure" is used in the game, it would make sense to standardize to that term. For instance, instead of "Normal Grass", a more concise term would be "Pure Grass." Ferretwings (talk) 01:55, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

I've never once seen the game refer to "Pure <block>", and its use on the wiki must be rare as well, as I've only ever seen it used when people try to contest "The Purity" as the proper name for a Forest. "Purity" or some variation thereof is used in-game, but incredibly rarely (only by the Clentaminator and Fountain, as far as I know), and never in the context of a single block. Everywhere it's used, it refers to the removal of secondary states, not the presence of one. I don't feel a term of this sort to be strictly necessary when corruptible blocks are few enough to unobtrusively convey their nature as such in the page text when it's relevant. Some of you might know I was working on a Javascript method of displaying Expert Mode info by clicking a link. I've since abandoned this as I wasn't too satisfied with the result. In the end, I think it's more valuable to have both normal/expert mode values on display at once for comparison.

I've instead made several changes to npc infobox, and created a new template called expert. You might have noticed the infobox changes already.

Being that we have more info to display in loot tables now besides mere quantity/drop rate, I've made each "middle" field in the loot table (what used to be a plain "quantity" number) into a miniature bullet list wrapped next to the item image.

  • Anything entered in the "quantity" field now automatically becomes the first bullet point.
  • To add bullet points, start a new line within the "quantity" field (press enter after you've typed a line) and type an asterisk followed by your text/links/etc, the same way you would make a bullet list anywhere else.

Long item names will also wrap now, if they should bleed into the cell border. You can take advantage of bullets when pc/console/mobile icons need to entered, or extra explanations like "in corruption worlds only" etc (instead of cramming those into the "drop rate" field).

As for expert mode values, rather than plastering the word "Expert" everywhere, use value (replacing "value" with a number or whatever). It colors the value and adds a dotted underline, along with a tooltip that reads "Expert Mode" for those who mouse over to see what that's about.

For drop rates, either use a slash or line break:

  • 10% / 30% (example: Luminite to the right)
  • 10% <br/> 30% (example: Portal Gun to the right)

...whichever happens to fit the table better.

tl;dr : Look at the infobox example to the right, and edit this section if you want to see how to do it.

PS. These infobox values are largely incorrect, and are just for the example display :) Equazcion (talk) 12:27, 24 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Minor chance to the template. In case the enemy has different stats during hardmode than it does pre-hardmode, you can add another argument to the template for the expert hardmode stats. For example the damage field of the infobox to the right:
  • 400 / 3000 with 400 being the default damage, 3000 being the expert mode damage and 5000 being the expert mode damage during hardmode.
See Sand Slime for a real complete example and this for the data. --0icke0 (talk) 13:14, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
...I also just created eh (expert hardmode) for instances where the Expert Hardmode value might need to be entered in a separate location (eg where the two might not fit right next to each other on a line, or something). You could then do something like this:
  • 400000 / 3000000 <br/> 50000000

Download the wiki?

Wonder if it's possible to download this entire wiki for when you're going to a place with no internet connection (they still exist)?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.57.33.121 at 16:43, 24 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Good question. We have Special:Export, but that gives you XML pages, which aren't really formatted for human readers.
You're probably left with using tools that are simply meant to download any entire website. One that I know of is HTTrack, which might work for you, as it's meant to do this for offline browsing -- however it's a techie-oriented tool and might be a little confusing for non-techies. Also, it essentially downloads sites one page/file at a time, and will probably take quite a while downloading all of Terraria Wiki.
Another thing you could do is simply visit any page you think you'll need, which your browser automatically "caches" (saves), and you can then use "work offline" (Firefox file menu, not sure where this option is in other browsers) to browse using your offline cache. There may also be other options: Take a look here and here. Perhaps let us know if you find something that works for you, in case others have the same question in the future :) Equazcion (talk) 16:59, 24 Jul 2015 (UTC)

Data from mobile\console versions

I've seen that data like health, damage and stuff like that comes straight from the code of the game. Most of the data is listed, however some of it, like velocity and use time of Sharanga is unlisted. How do we get that kind of data so wiki could be more complete? - Edge1337 (talk) 11:48, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

We don't currently have access to console/mobile source code, since the third-party developer that produces those versions has made it clear they have no interest in making it available to the public. I've attempted to get them to bend on this just for the sake of wiki data, since I share your interest in getting console/mobile values more accurate and complete, but haven't seen any indication they'd be budging on that any time soon. Simplified Chinese

I've requested that the Simplified Chinese translation project become a separate language wiki, and I've been told the separate wiki will probably be created sometime this week. That project seems to have a lot of interest, and I think this will be better to enact now, rather than wait until the move would become more complicated.

When the wiki is created (there will be an announcement along with links), wiki editors will largely be responsible for performing the move:

  • Pages can be created at their English titles at the foreign wiki, by any English-speaking editors who decide to help with the move. They can then be moved to their Chinese titles by the Chinese-speaking editors. Those editors who understand what the Chinese titles ought to be can of course create pages directly at their Chinese names.

Weapon reorganization

Just throwing this out here. I partly made this as table practice, but I feel that having so many weapon types all bunched together on Guns is not only confusing, but somewhat indicative of the overall poor categorization of weapons, tools, items, enemies and phenomena across the wiki. I'm putting this forward as part of a proposal to reorganize stuff into categories that make sense while still adhering with hard limits set by the game itself, particularly the Master Templates. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas or objections? Is this page even substantial enough to stand on its own? Gearzein (talk) 21:11, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

We probably need this. Technically "Gun" isn't a weapon class, and Rocket Launchers are. "Guns" should probably be used to list only bullet-firing weapons, since that's a clear game distinction.
I would indeed adhere to the classes the game appears to recognize, so that we'll have true sources for which items belong where, with less to argue over later. I say this because when you say that things are currently poorly categorized, it makes me think you intend to create new sub-categories. While this is simple enough in most publications, on a site that anyone can edit, it can get messy. The Guns page itself is a good example -- it was probably intended originally to be a tight little subcategory of ranged weapons, but everyone kept adding things that appeared to be guns, no matter whether they fit the original intent of the page. This is inevitable, and the choices are then either perpetually policing and reverting, or creating an "Other" section as was done there.
Applying this to your sandbox article -- I would call this page "Launchers", to have more of a distinction from Rocket Launcher -- or maybe "Explosive launchers", to avoid having things like Stake Launcher and Snowball Launcher added later. I'd also avoid inventing terms like "conventional", "technical", "as-intended", and rather be more literal/intuitive. I'm not sure what "as intended" actually means in this context, and "conventional" and "technical" are similarly unclear until reading further how you've chosen to define those. People often read no further than big bold names when editing (ie. page and section titles). Equazcion (talk) 22:07, 29 Jul 2015 (UTC)
I don't have any intent of creating new subcategories within existing groups- Guns stops at Guns, not Automatic Weapons or what have you. What I had in mind specifically when I made that comment was the weapon master template, for which "melee weapons" and "other melee weapons" are more realistically split between "swords" and "everything else" (though admittedly, there are a lot of swords), and the incongruity among means of classification between the proper wiki Categories, article text and infoboxes, templates and the "big list" pages. I don't have a whole ton of great solutions for fixing this and similar problems, so I'm throwing together prototypes and looking for feedback on them.
All the text is placeholders. When I put down "conventional" I laughed because I absolutely knew it would have to be rewritten, but I was in a hurry, and it was more important to convey the idea behind it rather than the "finished" product, which will necessarily be different just because of the nature of a wiki and the possibility of future changes. As for the title, I was stuck between Launchers and the less good sounding Rocket Weapons, leaning strongly towards the former, so it'll likely end up there.
The extra items on Guns will be removed eventually, with the key problem being where they'll go in the end. That's the problem with many of these changes- I can't see a Flamethrowers page surviving very long, but if they aren't guns, where else do you put them? Gearzein (talk) 23:06, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Flamethrower-like weapons (I think there are 2?) don't really need to go anywhere. There happen to be several launchers and bullet-firing guns, which the game treats as united classes in certain situations, so it makes sense to have sub-listings for them, but not everything needs to go in such a sub-listing. We have the ranged, melee, magic, and summon listings, and that's where the categorization would probably end for most weapons -- unless we got creative in inventing new terms, which I'd again foresee not being a very good idea in the end. In the nav templates we could be a little more categorical(?) as in maybe having a sub-grouping for the two "flamethrowers", just to avoid a very long list of the "other" ranged weapons, but creating an individual article to maintain for a list of those two items is probably not necessary. Equazcion (talk) 23:22, 29 Jul 2015 (UTC)
It actually didn't occur to me that they could just not be categorized, and that there doesn't necessarily have to be a sub-list for every weapon to fit into. Weapons like the Paintball Gun still have a place on Ranged weapons, but Other ranged weapons seems like a silly page to think about. That makes this much easier.
While I'm here I'll go ahead and ask if there are any thoughts on Repeaters relative to Bows, since the existence of auto-firing bows makes them now technically indistinguishable. Other than that I'll wait for a bit more feedback, and as long as there or no objections (or if no one else says anything) I'll go ahead and push Launchers forward later tonight. Dyes

Since Dyes are still kind of disorganized, I've thrown together an incredibly rough prototype table. While Compound Dye and Bright Dye seem to have gone over well enough, a crafting table doesn't feel like the best long-term solution for organizing the convoluted network of recipes that dyes entail. The main focus of this table is seeing the dyes in action. Feedback on the table layout is recommended, but personally I'm more concerned with reactions to the images, particularly the standard dyed item being showcased. I used Silver Armor because of a recommendation on the Terraria subreddit that I kind of agreed with- it's the closest to white I could think of while not being particularly flashy or seeming silly or out of place. I personally use the Unicorn mount for testing dye effects, because of how large and white it is, but I wasn't sure if it would be basic enough for general use. Alternatives I've considered are the Pharaoh set, Wedding set and Ghost set. If there are any other suggestions, that's what I'm looking for, though the table as a whole could probably stand to be laid out better, so give me whatever you've got.

And yes, I'm aware the images need to be cropped better. I used Camera mode's snapshot frame to capture them, but apparently the bottom pixel row of a character sprite bleeds into the next block. Gearzein (talk) 06:05, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Looks good, but it might only work if we keep all the individual dye pages around. For a while now, there has been talk of merging dyes into one or a few larger articles. If we're dreaming up new layouts we might want to finally implement one that will allow us to eliminate most of the individual dye pages. Is this meant to do that? If so, we should additionally sandbox test using some of the more complex dyes-crafted-from-dyes so we can see how well this might work out to replace a mass of standalone pages. See Talk:Dye for the various concerns. (pinging User:Gamablaze, User:KM100, User:Setheral). Equazcion (talk) 09:29, 3 Aug 2015 (UTC)
That was the hope, at least. There's no context on the test page, so I don't know how clear it is, but this would replace the existing tables on a page like Basic Dyes. It's not optimal, since you can't exactly link to individual table entries like you can page sections, but ideally the individual links in "crafted into" would connect the subpages- clicking the red and black dye icon would redirect to to Compound Dye, from which the player could find the entry on an identically laid-out chart that would explain in the same fashion both what was needed to create the item and what it could be made into. This would also cause a search for "red and black dye" to bring a reader to the Compound Dye page. It may not be perfect, but it's not much difference from how furniture works currently.
The only information on most of the individual pages is the crafting recipes and an image or two; hopefully I've compressed that into a single row on a chart. I'll go ahead and add some more rows for the sake of clarity in the meanwhile- for some reason, it didn't occur to me at the time that the most basic dyes weren't the most diverse sampling of use cases. Gearzein (talk) 09:51, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
We can add anchors for each dye so they can be linked like sections can. Any HTML element with an ID will do that. On a wiki we'd generally use <span id="Red_Dye"></span> (no spaces allowed in the ID; link would be #Red_Dye). This would probably be best done automatically via a new template or a new option in a current template. Equazcion (talk) 10:57, 3 Aug 2015 (UTC)
I created Templat:dye to list dyes while automatically creating an anchor for each one. When we convert each individual dye page into a redirect, we can include an anchor in the redirect (#dyename) to scroll the page automatically to the particular dye. Also note the template ing for generally listing crafting ingredients in a table. Equazcion (talk) 16:40, 3 Aug 2015 (UTC)
I went ahead with revamping the Dye page. I haven't deleted the individual dye pages or unlinked the main dye list yet, as there is/could be some info on those pages that hasn't been merged in yet. Notably, most of the item IDs are not there yet -- that info could be easier to grab from the individual pages (though still tedious). Just noting the status of that. Base Tips

I would like more defense tips for bases of all types. Right now there is only or mainly tips for bases above ground but I'm sure some people would still like to have bases underground.

Tips for defending Npc's that are underground against wraiths and reapers is something i think would be very helpful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EchoTheEcho (talk • contribs) at 22:14, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there are no tips in the base guide for your specific concern because these threats are part of why underground bases are so unpopular. Guides are written by the community through research and testing, though, so if you devise any solutions and would like to add your own recommendations, feel free to edit the guide. Gearzein (talk) 03:50, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Use of version icons in text

Is there a standard for use of version icons, particularly as seen in templates such as mobile version and the like, in paragraphs? While they're useful in tables, it looks and feels amateurish to have icons in the middle of the page text. I've been omitting them, but I wonder every time if it's against policy to do so. It may be worth reconsidering the policy if it is.

Also, not that I think it will change much, but the Style Guide should be amended to explicitly forbid some weird stuff that's been popping up lately, like the repeated use of version numbers in page text and parentheticals such as (needs testing). We really shouldn't have to say things like "using strikethrough on the previous sentence is a bad idea" but it might bear repeating, assuming someone actually bothers to read the style guide. Gearzein (talk) 03:42, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

There's no explicit policy on platform icons. It's a matter of style, though still unstated. I think we generally include them when we're listing differences between platform content/behavior. It helps (I think) to make those differences easy to spot. Stuff that needs verifying should probably be tagged with verify. The types of rules you're suggesting aren't the kinds that would practically address these issues, I think -- the people who put version numbers and those types of parentheticals into article text are not the same people who are putting in the time to read the rules.
Part of the way a wiki works is always going to be drive-by editors making corrections in non-ideal ways and more experienced editors integrating those into the article later on. The Moon Lord page is a good example: Much of the Notes and Tips sections are made up of drive-by corrections, as newbies find it less intimidating to add little bullet points rather than edit article paragraphs. Much of it should now be written out into an Attacks or Behavior section. There's no way to actually avoid this happening in the future. IT's just the nature of the beast. Equazcion (talk) 06:00, 8 Aug 2015 (UTC)

I have a related question, and it might be easiest to ask through an example... When you visit the Bunny page, you are made aware of variations of the Bunny (such as the Gold Bunny). However, the Gold Bunny is only available on Desktop. Should the Desktop/PC symbol be used to point this out? Ferretwings (talk) 02:06, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

The PC/Desktop icon should be used on tables to indicate version exclusivity, yes. I've gone ahead and added them in. Gearzein (talk) 03:03, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Armor naming conventions

As I was putting together the table for ranged weapon armor sets, I noticed that the way armor images are handled is inconsistent. Some armor pages have multiple images covering each variant in one infobox, while others use a single image or pair of images with all three head types together. Individual head variant sprites are mostly on the wiki already, though only the male variants exist, and they're only used on Defense. Access to these head variants as separate images would help table construction greatly, especially considering that individual weapon types now list armor and accessories that benefit them as well and need to be able to present the image appropriate to the table entry. I'm proposing that pages for sets of armor be switched over to the six-image style (for the most part seen on Hallowed armor), and the larger three-head compilation images be removed- since infoboxes now support images separate from the page title, they're no longer a necessary workaround to have all variants displayed in a single infobox.

Also, this is only a small sub-issue, but the character gender variants are also off- male variants are the standard name_armor, while female variants are spread out between several naming conventions- name_armor_Female, female_name_armor, female_name_headtype, or name_armor2 are the ones I've seen so far, in the cases where these images exist at all. I feel _armor_male and _armor_female would be both more appropriate and more consistent.

I realize I'm stacking projects on top of projects, but aside from getting the missing images, this seems like a task that could be largely handled by bot. Gearzein (talk) 03:35, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

My variant is:
  • For male: File:Copper armor.png
  • For female: File:Copper armor (F).png

I also think that we need some convention about wearer. For example Wearer (player) must have only one color of eyes, skin, hair and etc. if it used for Armor articles. Or maybe best variant is using a Manequin for all armor and Vanities. ← Alex Great talk 05:38, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

I have good idea. Do you see some articles about Football Commands at Wikipedia? In infobox used kits. This kits used a template images for all-World footbal kits. For example see infobox at Manchester United. Do you see red kit (home colours)? This kit is not only one image. This image is a part of pisces of this kit (T-shirt, lines, socks, trousers). This is a generated kit that used in all Footbal infoboxes at Wikipedia. It is realy simple than upload many million of images. I want to add same template form to infobox. We need only one player character (or manequin) and uploading all tile parts of armor and clothes. So... for one full image we need only: player, helmet, breastplate and boots (4 images for one armor kit). We maybe need to upload many tileparts of clothes. But this is fully conventional variant, I think. For example for Adamantite armor set we need: all 3 types of helmets, breastplate, boots and player (player is unifiyed image) - it means 6 images instead 3 full set images. Yes, yes. At result we need more and more variants if images, but I think it is good Idea. And we also can add .js-script that can switch images from male to female (I have one of this). So... If you like this idea, I can test it in my sandbox. Maybe this Idea will be fail. I don't know. No, no.. This is bad idea. ← Alex Great talk 05:53, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
I actually don't think that's a terrible idea, just not for this purpose. People have previously expressed interest in a "dye simulator" of sorts, but it would actually be much more expensive in terms of file space to have individual armor pieces. It would also be a ton of work.
As for a standard armor model, I think the default generated character (as seen in the Accessory images) should do fine. I guess we could change some details if people wanted to, but most helmets will cover enough of a player that the model doesn't really matter past a certain point. Dynamic Page List & other new extensions

A MediaWiki extension called Dynamic Page List (DPL) was recently enabled at English Terraria Wiki. It allows us to create list pages dynamically, instead of having to create them manually. For ease-of-use I created the dpl template.

DPL not only allows us to list pages, but also include stats from article infoboxes. See Swords for my first test of this functionality.

I believe this method of creating item/entity lists will be superior to our current method. When stats need to be changed or corrected, their article infoboxes will be the only place where changes will need to be made. We'll no longer need to manually match up values across several pages. Hopefully our various list articles will be converted into DPL lists gradually, as various details or issues are ironed out.

DPL can also be used more simply to display a single infobox value from an article. I created dpl2 for this. For example, Copper Broadsword will output the damage value for the Copper Broadsword: Copper Broadsword.

The following additional MediaWiki extensions have now also been enabled at English Terraria Wiki (see the links for documentation):

  • Gadgets - Allows administrators to add custom wiki features that users can enable via Preferences.
  • ImageMap - Lets us make specific areas of an image into clickable links.
  • JavascriptSlideshow - Alternate method of creating animations, instead of having to upload animated GIFs. Static wiki images can be specified as animation frames.
  • Labeled Section Transclusion - Allows us to transclude page sections individually, instead of having to transclude an entire page and use "noinclude" to exclude portions.
  • CharInsert - Allows admins to provide clickable interface links that let users insert various coding into an article's edit box more easily.
  • Editcount - Lets us show a user's edit count.
  • MyVariables - Enables some additional magic words for use in wiki documentation.

Feel free to experiment with these, but of course be careful to preview and test first if implementing them in live mainspace articles. If you have any questions let me know. Equazcion (talk) 21:26, 10 Aug 2015 (UTC)

Health bar and hearts

Hi, I created a series of templates (taken from Minecraft Wiki). These templates generate a bar similar to that used on Minecraft Wiki. Templates is not completed yet. Look sandbox at Russian section. And you will understand everything. ← Alex Great talk 06:31, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Trying to render enemy health using the ingame health bar is a stylistic choice I've never agreed with the Minecraft Wiki on. They still have to clarify the amount of health or damage that the heart display is meant to represent in every instance it's used, and when dealing with enemies that have health exceeding the player's natural cap, the graphical representation breaks down into just another number next to an already stated quantity.
The reason why it's not workable for our wiki should be obvious in its test implementation- Terraria deals with much higher numbers than Minecraft, and they're much less uniform, very often lower than or not divisible by 20. Many cases where this is used would just result in another number in the infobox, adding more data without contributing any new information. Gearzein (talk) 08:06, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
I might see the appeal for damage values, to have a graphical representation of how much health a player can expect to lose when hit, but players' widely varying defense stats would make that similarly less than helpful. It was a good idea, though I think not practically useful here. Equazcion (talk) 08:16, 11 Aug 2015 (UTC)

35 ads?

My adblocker says it's blocking 35 ads on most pages on this site. (This particular one has 23.) I didn't think any website would get views with so many ads because of sheer loading times and complete cluttering of content with ads. So I disabled it just to see how bad it was, and counted only 4 ads. Now that is definitely a bunch of false positives, or some quirk involving multiple ads that rotate over time, increasing revenue without cluttering up the page (which in my opinion is a great idea, honestly). But even then 35 against 4 is a huge difference. What is this? Latias1290 (talk) 11:29, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

We tend to list all block types as separate pages. This would cross a line where things would be pretty inconsistent if other block types weren't also merged, and then possibly other item types. I'm not going to say our unwritten practice on whether or not to merge is altogether rock-solidly consistent, but this seems like a new can of worms. I'll let others comment, and maybe address the topic of possibly merging common block types in general, which I think would be prudent first. Equazcion (talk) 07:50, 21 Aug 2015 (UTC)

pickaxes to pickaxes/nl copy problem

ive tried to copy some tables from pickaxes to pickaxes/nl, but i got a long line of "dplPickaxes/nl/" repeating itself, does anyone know why and can someone solve it? User:superstrijder15 about 14:00 dutch time 22-8-15

The dpl template at Pickaxes uses a formatting template located at Pickaxes/dpl by default. If you copied the code to Pickaxes/nl, that would be looking for the formatting template at Pickaxes/nl/dpl -- which didn't exist yet. I've just created it.
FYI, another way to solve this would've been to specify the existing formatting template, |format = :Pickaxes/dpl, instead of letting the dpl template try to look for the default /dpl subpage. Equazcion (talk) 17:11, 22 Aug 2015 (UTC)

Alex Great talk 07:08, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
This is interesting. I think it'd have some use for item images, but the crafting recipe example above takes far too much control out of the reader's hands and overall just complicates navigation. I'm concerned that the same may be true for its use in images- someone who wanted to see the image itself in detail would have to look at the file page for a static image, which is generally not desirable. Overall it feels like the wiki is showing you what it wants you to see in order to achieve a "style" that feels more slick and streamlined, but is ultimately a reduction in usability. We can leave the variants with armor. Or used in some kind of lists, such as armor, where it is not necessary to show all kinds of one armor, and enough to make a slideshow (such as 3 sets of Adamantite Armor (male and female) that gives in totally 6 sets of this armor). Your case, I'm just trying to cooperate with your wiki. All of these ideas, I'll try to translate into Russian wiki. Because, on the Russian wiki I have nobody to discuss it. ← Alex Great talk 05:40, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Adding heart mini-biome to the wiki.

Hello, I would like for the heart "mini-biome" page to be added to the wiki. It is a structure generated upon world creation exclusive to mobile that is found in snow biomes. It generates near the surface and is a heart shaped hole with two heart crystals and a chest in it. The chest contains: Heart lantern, copper coins, silver coins, and heart arrows. I can personally confirm that this is real and screenshots will be provided if needed. If you are not sure, generate a world and look for it. The structure does not spawn on every world created and the hole will rarely not look like a heart. Thanks

Enough reports of this have come in that it's likely to be an intentional game mechanic. I'll put something up in a bit. Gearzein (talk) 22:37, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
I've created Heart Shrine for this purpose. More information or corrections are welcome. Gearzein (talk) 23:59, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Wiki Load Times

Has anyone else been experiencing a significant increase in wiki page load times? Especially over the past few days, I've encountered many pages that take upwards of 10 seconds to load (I'm on gigabit internet, and I haven't been having problems with any other site). I don't know where the wiki is hosted -- like if it's hosted by Curse/Gamepedia -- but I guess it could be the continued bump in popularity from the 1.3 release? Redirects for language projects

Hello, guyz. I know that we have a MediaWiki Commons system of unified storage of files. It means that In all Terraria Wiki language Projects we can link to all files, that upload in English Terraria Wiki (because it is Common Storage). For example I can add in Chinese article a file, that doesn't exist at Chinese Wiki, but exist at English. And in article (if name is correct). Administrators and bureaucrats understand me.

In Russian Wiki I delete all files, that duplicates with original files in English Terraria Wiki, and all item/NPC files work via Special Module that very useful for our Russian section. But we and rest of Terraria Wiki language Projects have some files that differ with uploaded in English Wiki, it may be old image or wrong version of file. And this is my idea:

We can add redirects of files (that works as file Common redirects perfectly) in local languages into English Wiki. What does it mean?

  1. For example, this file of Amethyst in Chinese Wiki is outdated. We can delete it and this file can still work at Chinese Wiki, because it'll be use common file (from English Wiki). And in Chinese Article this image will be autoupdated.
  2. Additional way, this file of Vortex Drill in French Wiki is duplicate of Common file in English Wiki. We can delete French file and create in English Wiki a page with the same name without uploading it, only add redirect to English File. And in French Wiki this file in all articles can still work, because from System side nothing is happened. And every time when we can update One file, this file Will be automatically updated in all our language Wikis. We do not upload a one file 8 times (at 8 Terraria Wikis). We also can add via HotCat a category for this redirect file (for example, Category:Redirect files that used in French Wiki). This is all. ← Alex Great talk 08:35, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Does English images will charge slower on other Wikis ? -- Dinoxel discussion 23:14, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
The response from the server will be as fast as if the files have been uploaded locally. Example Commons and Wikipedia. 3000, 5000, and even 1 million files or articles will not slow down servers even at one second. (of course, if the Gamepdia servers is good). For example, WOWpedia have 136K articles and 85K images. Eighty five thousands! And it perfectly works. We can run a script (I can't, I don't understand it), that can did this work (if it possible) or make it manually, that very boring. This is only my idea. Russian wiki works fine through the our file module. If you are really against this routine work. We can forget about this matter. ← Alex Great talk 07:00, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

[Weapon] is similar to [other weapon]

I often see entries on weapons and other equipment mentioning how later equipment is very similar to or an upgrade for the weapon in the article, but I feel these don't really contribute all that much information to the weapon page. It's also somewhat of an unnecessary spoiler for those who are just interested in looking at a specific weapon, and though I recognize the need for articles to be informative, I don't think it's important enough to put with the rest of the weapon information.

I propose moving upgrade information into the Trivia section. Currently, it's either mixed in with the main description or the notes section, but it offers little additional information for anyone encountering a weapon for the first time. The trivia section would be a better place for that kind of tangential information. ShinyMoogle (talk) 05:32, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

I disagree there. Someone who likes a particular item will often be looking for info on what the upgraded version is when they approach later game stages. There isn't really anywhere else where that sort of info is kept anyway, but even if we made one, the original item page is the most likely place a person would look. It's simplest to just put that info there. Much of any game wiki could be considered "spoilers", but this is the sort of info people kind of expect to be "spoiled" in a place like this. Also seems more like "note" material, since it's functional documentation, rather than trivial "this might be interesting to know" info. Equazcion (talk) 19:27, 5 Sep 2015 (UTC)
I can partly see the concern- some of them, like the claim that a Sniper Rifle is an upgrade to a Musket, can be pretty far reaches. That said, yeah, there's a sort of implicit acknowledgement that if you're using a wiki, you're going to be exposed to information you haven't encountered yet, so no effort is made to protect people from spoilers. This information does need to be standardized a bit better, but Trivia isn't generally used for in-game information, and it fits best in either Notes or See Also sections. Removal of Pre-Hardmode as both a page and concept

For almost a year now, I've been trying to rewrite the Pre-Hardmode page in a way that isn't just a series of lists of game entities. I've thrown away drafts that attempt to treat it as a stage of progression, a difficulty option similar to "cores" and a property of the world, but none of them have made for suitable articles. In attempting to write it as "what hardmode isn't" it dawned on me- pre-hardmode and Hardmode are not two sides of the same coin, but the presence or absence of a state.

Here's my case. Hardmode is set by a flag, so the game basically considers hardmode to be "on" or "off". While this flag is set, hardmode items and enemies are available, but they serve to supplement the existing content, not to override. Aside from minor points of contention such as the Viking Helmet- many of which are still disputed, even- there's no content unique to a world in which the Hardmode flag is not set, unless the absence of functionality like spreading biomes counts as notable content. Almost everything on this wiki that's listed as a pre-hardmode item can be acquired through the exact same means in Hardmode, and those that can't are certainly so few in number than they can be noted individually.

This might be a big step, but I believe that the "hardmode" qualifier denotes well enough that certain items can only be obtained in Hardmode, such that an exclusive-sounding distinction doesn't need to be made for items that can be obtained either before or after it starts. Pre-Hardmode is currently defined entirely by the absence of Hardmode anyway, so it's not too outlandish to assume that the absence of the "hardmode item" note means that it can be obtained without activating Hardmode. Gearzein (talk) 21:19, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

I wouldn't mind this. I don't see anyone benefiting from the page as it currently stands, nor is it used much for such a 'big' concept. I can't come up with any use for this page, other than a list of pre-hardmode items, another starter guide or a page listing how pre-hardmode differs from hardmode, which is already explained on the hardmode page. None of those uses feel worthy to keep this concept alive. --0icke0 (talk) 00:17, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
I actually use this page quite often when looking for a list of weapons obtainable before Hardmode. I find this a useful page and I don't see any reason to just thor away all the hard effort it's been put on it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.21.238.51 at 14:16, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
The Weapons page already has sections dedicated to weapons only available before hardmode, and at a glance the only difference between them is slight discrepancies in list order. As stated before, all information on this page is redundant with other pages, where it's usually better categorized. You may find it useful to have this information where you prefer it, but that's not justification enough to have it duplicated across the wiki. Neither is the hard work put into this page- if the effort put into something were factored into its usefulness, there would still be categories for fan fiction and player art. Gearzein (talk) 20:00, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
I just started playing Terraria and this page was exactly what I was looking for, please consider keeping this despite the items/boss information being able to be found elsewhere on this wiki. I found it to be straight to the point.
I see your point, unsigned person, but as mentioned above this article is already a huge messy duplicate list of items from other articles. My experience with wikis makes me wonder "hey, is this up to date?" because I don't know whether the info here is linked via scripts to the actual articles or simply hard duplicated. Personally, I agree the info is useful but I don't agree it should be presented like this. Instead I'd rather it be a signpost of links to the actual categories in question. "For weapons, click here (link to weapon article)". That way I can see what categories I should be concerned with ("there are pre-hardmode crafting stations? i didn't know that"), without having to scan multiple long lists. - Spinfx (talk) 01:54, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
They're handmade tables. Their format is also pretty outdated- few other articles use that style of three-column list now. Even if the page were kept, it'd need significant work; I've considered just replacing it with a guide that properly categorizes the items and content and uses more modern sortable tables. Based on some of the input here, the information on the page isn't entirely useless, and it's obvious that at least some people are still getting use out of it. Gearzein (talk) 02:17, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
So a dpl call for each category? Those would be tables that can be expanded/hidden as well as sorted, right? Yeah, that would work. Not to sure about the guide vs article thing though, maybe leave it as an article since Hardmode itself is also an article. - Spinfx (talk) 02:33, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Dpl can only add ALL pages from a category. As we don't have separate categories for pre-hardmode only items, so this wouldn't work. --0icke0 (talk) 19:45, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

OBJECTION! unless if merging counts as deletion i would prefer merging with the hardmode page --MC Criamond (talk) 22:24, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

The page answers the question we are looking for, what is available for me at the beginning? The page is complete and full of information that make sense towards the title everything that can appear or be made at the pre-hardmode state of the game, concept and information is just right.

OBJECTION! for a player with pretty much everything, this is a really useful tool on "what gear I can bring to friends servers" without having to look up the items individually, of course itrs not a perfect system, but it works well.

OBJECTION! For some beginning players it is really useful to have a single overview of all items and entities that are available to them before hardmode, if they get confused by all the articles that keep mentioning "hardmode item" and want to progress the game in a more controlled way than going straight for the wall of flesh to get them. Agreed some of the info might easily get outdated and duplicate, but for those people it just needs to be a categorized overview of the item/entity with the name and image. The links to the appropriate pages/categories would be there to easily get to the more detailed table that is also updated. The current individual descriptions of the armour, bosses and npcs are unnecessary here for that purpose, as long as the sorting remains the same. -Jack 89.98.217.183 01:56, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

OBJECTION! I agree with Jack, this page is really helpful if you want to know what is the BEST items you can get before you go into hardmode! I use it all the time to make sure: okay I got the *** and the ***, NOW I'm ready to start hardmode. In fact, the only reason I am here is because I was using the page to see what else I can get ready before I try to go into hardmode. We wouldn't benefit from deleting it either! So, why do we? Its just helpful, and I don't think we NEED it to be removed! Sure, its not SUPER informative, but I like the simplicity of it, where without a big wall of text you can just go in and see what items you can upgrade! Overall, I don't think that EVERYONE uses it, but it is VERY helpful (from a personal experience) when you need it! -Brian 71.83.28.158 22:39, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

I haven't really commented on this for a while, but needless to say several months have gone by with no significant change. I still think the concept needs to be reworked a bit, but a lot of points have come up to the contrary, so for the time being it'll stay largely as is. Gearzein (talk) 02:02, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Portugese or Brasil Portuguese Wiki?

All you know about our language project - Portuguese Terraria Wiki. When I visit it today I see that their change logo to "Terraria Brasil". Is it mean that this wiki is for Brasil Portuguese speaker? I always thouht that this wiki is for users from Portugal. It means that this wiki have wrong language code. Correct language code for Brasil Portuguese is "pt-br". ← Alex Great talk 05:29, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

This is a sort of complicated situation (or at least I see it as one; it may actually be simpler than I believe). This appears to be an action taken by a single user, who has become the sole maintainer of the Portuguese version of the wiki. I'd suggest taking this up with them, but it's possible that they're unaware of language codes or the greater network of wikis, and it's unknown if they even speak english- or any of the languages our current known contributors speak, for that matter.
At the risk of becoming overly philosophical in my interpretations of greater wiki policy, I'd argue that there's something to be said for a userbase defining its wiki, rather than the other way around. The English side of the wiki isn't anything like what it was when it started because of how drastically the guard has changed. If the entire administration and most of the userbase changed over the next year to users who spoke british english, we'd be in some regard obligated to respect that majority's consensus decisions. If the main users of the Portuguese wiki are Brazilian, I don't know if it'd be appropriate to change the URL on them just for the sake of consistency. This consistency, and the rules that help shape it, should exist in service of the userbase rather than the other way around. I realize, of course, that this is all essentially moot in light of the fact that /pt has a single named editor, but there is no /pt-br, so we'd basically just be kicking this user off a wiki that serves their purposes because it's "not theirs"- and subsequently either asking Curse to make a new wiki for one user, or more likely forcing the sole editor to come here and deal with being an understaffed subproject again. It may be possible to make such a move early on, but if /pt starts catching fire like /zh-cn (or /chs) did, it may be hard to funnel that userbase to a place we'd prefer them to be. If it doesn't, there's a likelihood that the project dies because of the "demotion" of the wiki's maintainer.
That said, whether the choice of region is correct notwithstanding, the decision to change the logo and essentially rebrand is certainly not. Honestly, it's kind of impressive that the wiki logo wasn't protected there in any way and managed to remain the same for four years, but even if an administrator here suggested such a change, it'd be met with staunch resistance. I'd suggest contacting them regarding these issues, but really, once language projects are split they become entirely autonomous, so we as users don't have any power over them, and the editor in question may soon be in position to become that wiki's guardian and chief administrator. The phrase "Curse intervention" sounds far too severe to be warranted, but it'd be necessary if anyone wanted to go further than politely worded letters.
I have accidentally written an essay on interwiki diplomacy. In short, though, I'd speak to the wiki's editor before anyone started making system-level changes. Gearzein (talk) 07:10, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Listing of Armor?

Note: I've never added anything to the gamepedia or edited anything, but I saw something in the gamepedia that i think should need fixing http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Armor, at the bottom, it has solar armor listed, then Vortrex armor, Then Nebula, then Stardust armour. why are those not listed by strength of defence points? are they listed by what the dev's think are better? well i just think that listing the armor's by defence points is more user friendly and easier for people like me who look at the pedia on there chromebook every chance they got. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.22.0.171 at 12:59, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

I believe armor is listed there by class, ie. game progression. Within each class (such as the Luminite armors you're mentioning) I don't think there is any consistent order. Probably not a pressing matter but ordering them by total defense seems fine, if someone wanted to do that. Equazcion (talk) 12:58, 28 Sep 2015 (UTC)

No value object

I've tweaked item infobox to do that when no buy/sell values are present. Equazcion (talk) 01:58, 29 Sep 2015 (UTC)
On second thought I undid that. Several merged pages have no sell value in their main infobox, but individual items within them do, so "no value" is inaccurate in those instances. Equazcion (talk) 04:07, 29 Sep 2015 (UTC)

I don't understand what is the problem--Lightg4 (talk) 17:56, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
With this change, a page like Paintings would display "no value" or "0", even though the items there have sell values. Equazcion (talk) 02:07, 30 Sep 2015 (UTC)
It's not a problem if we manually write "depending of the painting" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lightg4 (talk • contribs) at 16:00, 30 Sep 2015 (UTC)
If caveats like that have to be manually written in, it might just be best to not automate a system that specifies the value to be something it's not in a lot of cases. I for one always took it for granted that an item that had no listed sell value couldn't be sold for coins, but even if it's necessary to make these clarifications, they shouldn't be done through blanket changes to the infrastructure. Gearzein (talk) 19:22, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
Sometimes, it isn't clear. With the fishing Pool, I thinked there wasn't any information for the selling of these that don't have any value. So, do we put 0 CC to every object that don't have merchand value ?--Lightg4 (talk) 19:57, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Normal and Gold Critters

I propose that all these gold critters be placed on the same page as their normal counterparts. Gold critters are usually caught while the player is catching normal critters. They are both caught in the same manner, and have the same use and crafting options. The only differences between "normal" and "gold" are rate of spawn, bait power, selling price, and their golden color.

An example would be:
The Grasshopper is a harmless Critter. It can be caught using the Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later. It can be used as Bait for Fishing. It can also be caged via the crafting menu, but cannot be released once caged. Grasshoppers can be found when destroying grass on the surface.

The Gold Grasshopper has a 1/150 chance of spawning in place of the ordinary version. It can be sold for 10 Gold Coin. It has a bait power of 50%, the highest usable value among bait.

Ferretwings (talk) 21:13, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

We might not need separate pages for any Critters really... Equazcion (talk) 01:49, 29 Sep 2015 (UTC)
i agree completley, although mabey not merge all critters, most pages allow such similar mobs to be merged, [such as the mimics and biome mimics] i, for one, see no reason why they cannot be merged! they are simple counterparts of the others, and even use the the same formula to spawn! as far as the game is concerned, their the same critter! Sure they're all basically loot lists, but they're each pretty long lists, and all are different. I don't see much value in merging them. Rather I think they're more approachable as separate pages. Equazcion (talk) 23:43, 30 Sep 2015 (UTC)
Have you considered merging the thrown powders onto one page? Ferretwings (talk) 00:05, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Mobile Cursed/Shadow Hammer drops

I took a look at editing and didn't want to ruin anything on the page so I decided to let a seasoned person do it. I have noticed that the drops for the Cursed Hammer and Shadow Hammer differ in Android version 1.2.10333. They will drop one of 3 things guaranteed (so 33.3% for each). A stack of 2-4 Gold Chandeliers, a stack of 2-4 Silver Chandeliers, or a stack of 2-4 Nature's Gift. The last should actually be a bug as Nature's Gift cannot be stacked, but that's for dev to deal with. I have not seen it drop any Cobalt, Mythril, or Adamantite bars after killing approximately 75 Hammers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.63.60.58 at 15:54, 30 September 2015

Help

Hi so im a huge noob (I have played loads of Terraria on a small device) and im wondering if I could have some help on how to save and quit? I have lost all my progress on 2 worls now :P Thanks! Please just write the answer somewhere.

24.34.194.198 17:15, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Manual saving on the mobile version of Terraria (which I assume is what you mean by "small device") is simply done by opening the menu (the one with options like "Resume game" etc). Upon doing this you should briefly notice a spinning Thorn Chakram.png-symbol in the lower right, indicating that the game is being saved. The game should also automatically save at regular intervals, likewise indicated by that symbol. If your game still remains unsaved I suppose there is either a problem with your Terraria app or with your device. If you lose progress due to the game crashing then that is apparently a common problem with the mobile version of Terraria and has no proper fix besides the player regularly performing manual saving by opening the menu. If you lose progess due to a character or world file becoming unplayable, you may try this. NoseOfCthulhu (talk) 21:29, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Idea for a new format(ish)

I have an idea. What if every time we had a recipe or page we had to put a little icon that represented if it is exclusive to the crimson or the corruption? For example: Celestial Cuffs(Eater of souls hd by osmatar-d4uaob4.jpg)(of course something smaller). Should there be an icon or header representing the corruption and crimson independently? ZambeeZlayer (talk) 04:10, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

I'm wondering how useful this would be, but I don't think it's a terrible idea at face value. Of course, I'd recommend such an icon only be used in tables or other places where textual clarification isn't possible. There are only a few items that aren't obviously exclusive to one biome or the other- it's immediately apparent that Ichor can't be found in the Corruption, for example. If it could be made less obtrusive than the current version icons I'd say go for it. Gearzein (talk) 02:49, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
There aren't all that many items for which this is the case and, if you ask me, introducing a new format for a few pages isn't a good idea. It forces the reader to learn more of these 'shortcuts', which add little value to the wiki compared to just stating it in the text. --0icke0 (talk) 19:45, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

Collapsible sections

Hiya folks. Does anyone know of any other tags that works like collapse does? The mw-collapsible table does the job, but I find it annoying that the "Expand"/"Hide" link text moves; if the section is collapsed, the link "Expand" is on the left - if the section is expanded, the link "Hide" is way over on the right. But collapse straight up places the link in the middle of the screen, which isn't ideal either. I'd like to use them in longer articles, especially guides. - Spinfx (talk) 08:19, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

I've created a new template collapse top simple as an alternative for collapse top, which simply adds an "Expand"/"Collapse" link on the page (aligned to the left). Feel free to customize it a bit more if you want different formatting. --0icke0 (talk) 13:08, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! The closing collapse bottom tag seems to add a visible "" on the page though; sample at end of "World Creation" section. - Spinfx (talk) 16:00, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
Added collapse bottom simple for closing, should work now. --0icke0 (talk) 16:43, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Updating on platforms

I've noticed that the wiki has lots of information and is rather expansive, but it holds little content for console users such as myself and many of my friends (at least 30.) I've looked everywhere for when the update comes out but I haven't found by YouTube or the forums when or where it may come out. Before starting Terraria up on console (at least xbox) in the notifier of the saving icon and system, you can see a small piece of text in the lower right corner saying ADDI:20150511, which me and my friends assumed was the update time.

Sincerely YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND,

Mr Torgue- I mean Admiral Digi, yeah yeah, me not mr explosion over there.

All the content that is available for console can be found on the wiki. There is no release data on the wiki, because there is simply no known release date. --0icke0 (talk) 13:08, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
Correction- The release period for the 1.2.4 and remainder of 1.2.3 update is the fourth quarter of this year ZambeeZlayer (talk) 22:09, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Okay, it just looked like it doesn't have much console info because there's so much labeled for just computer it seems like there's less to console.

Yes! Now my Christmas plan can't fail? Does that mean all the 1.3 content or some updates to small things. Or both? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.238.29.184

All the 1.2.4 content and the missing 1.2.3 content. However the 1.3 content will NOT be included in next update. --0icke0 (talk) 12:01, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Aw, computer gets all the good stuff. Guess I'll settle with derp fishrone.

PvP guide rewrite

I've rewritten Guide:PvP over here. The idea behind this rewrite is simple: only put in the stuff relevant for PvP. Rather then listing all weapons/armor/etc only list those that for some reason work better or worse then during normal gameplay. Furthermore, I've removed all the classes. While they may be useful on a role playing server, they felt completely useless for competitive PvP gameplay. Last of all I've removed some traps that were either way too much work compared to what they did or just duplicates of other traps. However this is a significant change, the current guide is the 3rd largest page on this wiki, with 99,922 tokens. They new guide is a 'mere' 20,732 tokens. So I'm posting it here for feedback and anyone is free to make changes to the new rewrite. If there are no major problems I'll replace the guide with the new version and it can be improved from there. --0icke0 (talk) 18:00, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

I'll just voice my approval for this change, even though I'm not very active when it comes to most Terraria guides nor even Terraria PvP. Many of the guides are bloated and/or outdated and thus in bad need for a rewamp. I really don't see much benefit in keeping the PvP guide as it is. Sidebar redesign

I have a feeling the the Sidebar of our wiki could be more useful than it currently is. Mainly the link to Terraria Wiki:Projects doesn't seem particularly useful to me and I would rather see it replaced with a link to Help:Contents and/or Category:Things to do, which may bring more editors in. Furthermore, half of the guides links link to a page that is targeted for rewriting or deleting. Especially the link to Guide:Gardening doesn't feel right there, while a link to Guide:Making money sounds a lot more useful to me. Any other thoughts on this matter and what links do you like to see removed/added? --0icke0 (talk) 19:28, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

consider having a regex-based bot exchange most instances of "Demon Altar" for "Altar"

The Crimson has been around since 1.2 yet I'm still finding myself making edits like this one. I know it's a small matter to remove "Demon" from the link markup, but that makes it all the more surprising to me that it hasn't been dealt with by now. Surely a regex bot would be able to make the necessary edits? I can't really think of any complications to regexing it besides not editing The Corruption and Altar and maybe being careful not to replace "Demon Altar/Crimson Altar" (and vice versa) with "Altar/Crimson Altar" (rather replacing it with just "Altar"). What do you guys think?--Macks2008 (talk) 22:42, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Overall, thats actually not that bad of an idea. It would add clarification to the corruption/crimson exclusive pages and any to page that mentions altars. Along with my suggested edit, it would be a big clarification project, but it would be more clarifying and pleasing to the eye for all readers of the wiki. ZambeeZlayer (talk) 23:40, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

is there a "not finished" thing for the top of a page like there is for"this is candidate for deletion"?

well, the title says it, im wording on dutch wiki and sometimes have to leave thing onfinished so this would be nice. superstrijder15 19:45, 17-11-15 (UTC(i think, might be 2 hours wrong))

You can use stub or in case you plan on finishing it shortly construction. --0icke0 (talk) 22:00, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Allright. thx Superstrijder15 14:32, 21-11-15 (UTC)

Blood Moon

In my mobile game, it says the blood moon is rising. Do I need to be careful of something? 115.135.115.60 09:05, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

That would be the purpose of this wiki; the Blood Moon article has everything you need to know. Gearzein (talk) 09:43, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Defense

Hey guys i was recently looking at the article on defense in the wiki. the equations and examples provided don't match up. according to the equation (net damage=damage-(defense*(0.5 or 0.75 depending on if you're looking at expert or normal mode))) you would save the same amount of HP from every attack, but according to the examples, the amount of damage you take varies with the attack. Is the equation wrong, or are the examples? i would really appreciate any help i could get on this :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.226.149.108

Both are correct. You save the same amount of HP from every attack, but a higher damage attack has more damage remaining after that reduction. --0icke0 (talk) 11:40, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

New Update for Console 12/17/15

Hey so a few days ago my console updated terraria (Xbox 360) This update is the 1.2.4 PC equivalent (Fishing, Duke Fishron, minecarts, mounts, etc.) Can someone please review the change log and update the wiki (Or show me how so I can do it?)

It has been updated. --0icke0 (talk) 23:06, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi, everyone. Can anyone confirm if the Moon Lord will ever come up in the iOS version of Terraria?

Thanks!

Yeah, I would like to know that too. Rob4sian (talk) 00:31, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
