  • Internal Tile ID: 381, 534, 536, 539, 625, 627 (on Stone Blocks) / 517, 535, 537, 540, 626, 628 (on Gray Bricks)

Moss is a grass-like plant that grows on Stone Blocks. It comes in (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 11 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 5 different variants. Mossy stone requires one more hit to break than clean stone. Moss will be destroyed if the Stone Block it is on converts to Ebonstone, Crimstone, or Pearlstone. Moss sprouts fuzz that can be cut like grass weeds.

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, moss fuzz can be harvested using a Paint Scraper or Spectre Paint Scraper, which has a 1/9 (11.11%) chance of dropping as a plantable moss item when using either scraper, the rest will simply disappear as usual.[1] Collected moss can be placed on Stone Blocks and Gray Bricks, or used to craft mossy walls.

There are 5 types of regular moss: Green Moss, Brown Moss, Red Moss, Blue Moss, and Purple Moss. One of each regular moss can be found throughout each third of a given map (three variants per world). They can be found either randomly on cave surfaces or in moss chambers with a matching mossy wall.

Glowing mosses are special variants of moss that glow in vibrant colors. These include the Lava Moss, Krypton Moss, Xenon Moss, Argon Moss, Neon Moss, and Helium Moss. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Lava Moss can be found in patches around the lava layer of the Caverns. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Krypton, Xenon, Argon, and Neon moss grow in glowing moss biomes and in much larger areas than other mosses, and only one type among these can be found in each world. Up to two (small world) / three (medium world) / four (large world) glowing moss biomes will be generated in the Cavern layer, mostly above the lava layers, but not under the spawn point area. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Helium Moss does not spawn naturally and can instead be obtained by throwing any other Glowing Moss into Shimmer.

On Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, mosses that did not naturally spawn in a world can be obtained by putting any Glowing Moss in an Extractinator, which produces regular mosses; or a Chlorophyte Extractinator, which produces all variants of mosses.

Notes

  • On moss-covered stone blocks, Strange Plants are able to grow.
  • Moss slowly spreads across exposed Stone Blocks and (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Gray Bricks at any depth, once planted (including above ground). If the player does not have access to a Paint Scraper to collect moss with, they can grow extra moss by building "bridges" of stone for existing moss to grow across.
  • (Old-gen console version) The Staff of Regrowth can be used on Stone Blocks to grow moss at any depth. The type of moss will vary depending on the proximity to other types of moss. As such, one can spread the Lava Moss from the cavern's lava layers all the way up to the surface.
  • Moss clumps will remain on actuated blocks if not harvested.

Trivia

  • The tooltip of the glowing mosses, 'A sight to dwell upon and never forget', is a quote by Morris Travers, an English chemist who worked with Sir William Ramsay in the discovery of xenon, neon, and krypton.
  • The glowing mosses' colors do not accurately match the actual colors that such gases produce in real life when used in a gas-discharge lamp.
    • Argon can produce a pink-ish color, though the accuracy of the shade is debatable.
    • Helium often has a reddish-orange glow. However, the color(s) used in-game may be a reference to how the Sun (which helium is named after through Greek helios) emits a light covering the full visible light spectrum, and as such, the moss cycles through the spectrum as well.
    • The proper color that krypton produces is white. Instead, the green color that Krypton Moss has may be a reference to Kryptonite, a fictional material found in stories featuring the character Superman. In these stories, Kryptonite is a crystal-like material from the home planet of Superman, Krypton, and it can weaken (former) inhabitants of that planet. It is most commonly depicted as a vibrant and light green, similar to the moss.
    • Neon properly glows a reddish-orange color like helium, though other colors of gas-based lighting are often called "neon" regardless.
    • While xenon can produce a light blue color, the accuracy of the shade is, once again, debatable.

  • Can moss spread / grow harvestable clumps on actuated blocks, and does this differ between versions? Brief testing suggests not on Steam, at least
