Actuator
The Actuator is a mechanism item purchased from the Mechanic for 10 SC each, or harvested from sand traps, lava traps, or Dead Man's Chest traps. It has to be placed on a tile and connected with wiring to function. When activated, the tile it is on toggles between active and inactive state, effectively allowing any block to be toggled like Active or Inactive Stone Blocks. Like Wire, Actuators are normally invisible and only become visible when a mechanism item is held.
The following items interact with Actuators:
- They can be placed with The Grand Design (though they can also be placed by hand).
- They can be removed with the Wire Cutter or The Grand Design.
- The Presserator automatically places Actuators on objects when placing them, if the player has any.
- The Actuation Rod can toggle any Actuator within a limited range without requiring Wire.

Notes
- Actuators can toggle the active/inactive states of almost all blocks and platforms, as well as Teleporters, with the following exceptions:
- Golf Cups cannot be deactivated by Actuators.
- Living Fire Blocks (and variants) and Smoke Blocks cannot be deactivated either, since they are already background blocks.
- Bubbles cannot be deactivated if the Actuator is triggered by a pressure plate, Switch, or Lever. Other triggers, such as sensors or timers, do allow the Actuator to deactivate the Bubble.
- Lihzahrd Bricks below the surface cannot be deactivated until Plantera has been defeated.
- Most objects and furniture on top of a block/platform with an Actuator will be freed when the block/platform is deactivated with the Actuator.
- This includes most plants (such as herbs or Glowing Mushrooms), which will be destroyed as if a tool was swung at them. Moss fuzz will remain on the inactive block.
- Blocks and platforms cannot be deactivated with an Actuator if they directly support any of the following objects:[1]
- The storage items listed above always prevent the blocks they are placed on from being toggled, regardless of whether they contain any items or not.
- Liquids and falling blocks like sand, silt, and slush can pass through inactive blocks.
- Inactive blocks still count towards the biome existence requirements, including blocks from the evil biomes.
- NPCs can spawn on top of inactive blocks and will immediately fall through them.
- Inactive blocks cannot be used for the frame ("walls") of an NPC house, and deactivating a block in the frame will render the house invalid.
- The portals from the Portal Gun and Portal Gun Station will vanish if any of the blocks they are placed on is deactivated.
- An Actuator can be removed from a block after the block was changed to the inactive state; the block will remain inactive even after the Actuator is removed. To change it back to the active state, an Actuator must be placed on it and toggled again, or the block must be mined and placed down again.
- The player cannot see, place, or destroy any Actuators in front of unsafe Lihzahrd Brick Walls until Golem has been defeated.
Tips
- Using Actuators in place of doors creates entrances that can completely block off the enemies from a Blood Moon or other events.
- Traps can be deactivated by Actuators and will still fire when triggered, making it possible to place several traps in a row without blocking any of them.
- Actuators can be used to pass through Hellstone in the Underworld without generating lava, Chlorophyte without defeating the three mechanical bosses, and Hive blocks without generating honey or spawning Bees. The Actuation Rod helps with quickly toggling placed Actuators.
- If the player stands inside an inactive block and it becomes active, they can move inside the six blocks they are in, but will be stopped by other blocks. This may be used for protection.
- Like naturally generated Wires, naturally generated Actuators can be harvested, though they appear much more rarely, saving 10 SC per Actuator.
- Actuators are a good tool for terraforming or clearing the way for a plot, especially underground.
Trivia
- The Multicolor Wrench is not capable of removing Actuators, even though it is crafted using the Wire Cutter, which does remove Actuators.
- However, The Grand Design, crafted from the Multicolor Wrench, is capable of doing so.
