User:Crystallized/Blocks
The environments of Terraria are mostly made up of blocks such as dirt and stone.
As of 1.2, All blocks can be collected with a Pickaxe or Drill (Drills are not available until world enters Hardmode). Rare blocks may require higher-grade Tools to mine. Blocks can also be transformed into half-blocks and 45 Degree Right angled triangles with a Hammer.
The only blocks that can't be mined with a Pickaxe or Drill are any blocks with a Tree, Chest or Demon Altar/Crimson Altar on top, which need to be harvested using an Axe for the tree, Pickaxe or Drill for the Chest, and Pwnhammer, Drax, or The Axe for the altar first. Additionally, every Block with any kind of Grass growing on it can not be mined but instead the Grass on the block will be destroyed and only the Dirt or the Mud it grew on remains.
Nearly all blocks stack to 999 as of 1.2.3.
Naturally Occurring Blocks
These blocks are created when the world is spawned. Though few of them are renewable, more can always be found by generating new worlds.
Soils
Soils are the most accessible type of block in the game, and they make up the majority of the world. Many of them grow Plants naturally. All soils stack up to 999 and can be mined with a Copper Pickaxe or Tin Pickaxe (except for the Stone variants as noted below). All soils are destroyed by explosives.
Block | Description |
---|---|
Dirt |
Dirt is the most accessible soil on any map, making up most of the surface and the primary soil in the Underground. Grass spreads across bare Dirt when exposed, and the bulk of the Dirt found on the surface appears as Grass. Blinkroot will grow naturally on Dirt, Daybloom on Grass, and Deathweed on Corrupted and Crimson Grass. Bare Dirt is immune to the spread of Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow, but Dirt with Grass is not. |
Stone |
Stone is the second most accessible soil, found in surface deposits and the primary soil of the Cavern layer. It is a bit more durable than dirt, and is considered a “safe” material to build houses with, however, it is not immune to Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow, and will become Ebonstone, Crimstone, or Pearlstone when exposed. Unlike basic stone, Ebonstone, Crimstone, and Pearlstone can only be mined with a Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe or higher. Stone is a crafting material in all Brick blocks. Stone can also grow Moss. |
Sand |
Sand is the yellow terrain most commonly found in deserts. Sand is one of the soils affected by gravity - it will fall when the block underneath it is mined, and will damage any players or NPCs standing underneath it. Waterleaf and Cactus will grow naturally on Sand, and Sand is also used as ammunition in the Sandgun. Sand is not immune to Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow, and will be turned into Ebonsand, Crimsand, or Pearlsand if those biomes are allowed to spread to Sand. |
Clay | Clay deposits can be found underground, most commonly just below the surface in the Underground. Clay is currently used in crafting only. Clay will not grow vegetation. |
Mud |
Mud is found in the Underground, as well as Surface and most commonly in the Underground Jungle. Mud covered in Mushroom Grass will grow Glowing Mushrooms, while mud covered in Jungle Grass can grow Moonglow and bare mud can grow Blinkroot instead. If mud gets near Corruption or Crimson in hardmode, it will turn into dirt, however, dirt can be crafted back into mud at Water pools. |
Ash | This is found in The Underworld alongside Hellstone. Fireblossom grows naturally in Ash, and its seeds can be planted in it as well. |
Silt | Silt, like Sand, is affected by gravity and will fall when mined, dealing damage to the player if they are underneath. As of 1.2 using the Extractinator, Silt can be now made into various gem and ores. It is immune to Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow spread. |
Snow | Snow is the soil that makes up most of the surface of a Snow Biome. It is immune to Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow spread, and trees planted in Snow will drop regular Wood just like on Grass. |
Ice |
Ice makes up the bulk of the Ice biome and, unlike snow, is not immune to Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow. Ice will be turned into Purple Ice, Red Ice, or Pink Ice when exposed to those biomes. While wearing the Ice Skates, the player will move faster on Ice. |
Slush | Slush is fundamentally the same as Silt, but is found only in Snow Biomes and the Ice biome. It can be converted into gems, ores, and money with the Extractinator. |
Grown Blocks
These blocks drop when their respective plant is looted from the environment using an Axe or Chainsaw. Once in the player's inventory, they can be placed like other blocks and looted with a Pickaxe like all other blocks. All grown blocks stack up to 999 and, once placed, can be destroyed by explosives and mined with any Pickaxe or Drill.

Pearlwood | Hallowed Trees | The Hallow | Can be grown manually with Acorns on Hallowed Grass. |
Shadewood | Crimson Trees | The Crimson | Can be grown manually with Acorns on Crimson Grass as of 1.2.3. |
Glowing Mushroom | Glowing Mushrooms, Giant Glowing Mushrooms | Glowing Mushroom biome | Giant Glowing Mushrooms must be harvested with an Axe or Chainsaw, but regular ones can be looted like all other plants. All glowing mushrooms spawn naturally on Mushroom Grass. |
Cactus | Cactus | All Deserts | Though Cactus found in Corrupt, Crimson, and Hallowed Desert has a different appearance, they all drop the same block when harvested. |

Bricks
Bricks are a specific type of crafted block with a repeating rectangular pattern. Though many bricks are crafted from ores and soils, some can only be found by looting NPCs or the environment. All Bricks have the word 'Brick' in their name except for one: the Mudstone Block.
Bricks have no sell value. All crafted bricks are made using a Furnace.
Crafted Blocks
These blocks are crafted at a crafting station. They all stack to 999, are immune to Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow spread, and can be looted with a Pickaxe or Drill.
