The Gold Pickaxe is an early-game pickaxe. Its alternate ore counterpart is the Platinum Pickaxe.

The Gold Pickaxe is able to mine blocks and ores weaker than Ebonstone, Crimstone, Hellstone, and Pearlstone (which requires a pickaxe with at least 65% pickaxe power, e.g. a Nightmare Pickaxe). Most notably, it can mine Meteorite.

(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The Gold Pickaxe is able to mine Obsidian.

Its best modifier is Light for harvesting purposes and Legendary for combat purposes.

Notes

  • Compared to its alternate ore version, the Platinum Pickaxe, it has less pickaxe power, deals 1 less damage, and is slightly slower in terms of mining speed.
  • Its mining speed is 17, compared to Silver Pickaxe's 11 and Tungsten Pickaxe's 19. However, the Silver Pickaxe will require one more hit to destroy blocks with 100 HP (e.g. Stone Blocks), and therefore the Gold Pickaxe is a faster upgrade. Note that mining blocks with 100 HP will take 34 ticks[1] with Gold Pickaxe and 33 with Silver Pickaxe, where blocks with 50 HP (e.g. Dirt Blocks) will take 17 ticks with Gold Pickaxe and 22 with Silver Pickaxe.
  • Additionally, in worlds that generated with Silver Ore instead of Tungsten Ore, the Gold Pickaxe is the earliest pickaxe the player can obtain that can mine Meteorite as well, unless the player has obtained the Bone Pickaxe dropped by the Undead Miner.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.1: Gold Bars needed to craft decreased from 12 to 10.

Footnotes

  1. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
