Movement speed is one of the player's stat and affects how quickly they can travel around. Many features can affect movement speed, such as Movement Accessories, Wings, Mounts, Minecarts and Liquids, along with certain Buffs, Debuffs, Armor and other hazards such as Ice Blocks and Cobwebs. Movement speed can be broken down into horizontal movement, which is the most affected component by most sources, and vertical movement, which is mostly affected by Wings and Movement Accessories.

Vertical speed

Vertical speed is mostly affected by jump speed and gravity, which can be improved with the use of Wings, Mounts and certain Movement Accessories. When jumping, vertical speed matches the jump speed value subtracted by the gravity value (see Gravity) and remains constant for the duration of the jump. With wings and rocket boots, speed accelerates after the initial jump(s) towards a certain speed limit.

By default, a full jump causes a vertical speed of ~18.8 tiles/s against a gravity of 1.5 tiles/s and lasts for 0.25 seconds, giving a jump height of ~4.3 tiles.

Flight speed

During upwards flight, speed accelerates towards a maximum vertical flight speed which is directly proportional to the jump speed value after bonuses are applied.

Mph

See also: Stopwatch

Mph (miles per hour) is the unit of measurement of movement speed displayed by the Stopwatch. It takes into account both vertical and horizontal movement.

Mph conversion is hard coded as 216000/42240 which directly multiplies the pixel per tick velocities used by the game. This coincides with the number of ticks per hour (60 ticks per second and 3600 seconds per hour = 216000 ticks) and the number of pixels per mile (16 pixels per tile, 1/2 tile per foot and 5280 feet per mile = 42240 pixels).

Thus, 1 mph is equal to:

  • 11/15 tiles per second (tiles/s)
  • 44/225 pixels per tick (px/t)

Notes

  • Rather than increasing speed, extra jumps increase the jump duration, allowing for a longer sustained increased speed.
