The Trident is a pre-Hardmode spear that has a 9/40 (22.5%) chance of being found in Water Chests, Ocean Crates, and Seaside Crates. When held while submerged in water or lava, the player is granted increased movement speed and jump height. The player can decrease fall speed by holding ▲ Up. These effects do not work in honey or Shimmer.[1]

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

Notes

  • The Trident has a maximum range of approximately 5.73 tiles.[2]
    • Melee speed bonuses can slightly increase its range, in addition to increasing its attack speed.
  • The Trident emits light when used underwater.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Now generates light when swung underwater.
    • Chance of being contained in Water Chests and found in Ocean/Seaside Crates increased from 81/400 (20.25%) to 9/40 (22.5%).
  • Desktop 1.4.0.1:
    • Damage increased from 11 to 14.
    • Knockback increased from 5 to 6.
    • When held, gives unrestricted movement in water.
    • Chance of being contained in Water Chests reduced from 14/45 (31.11%) to 81/400 (20.25%).
  • Desktop 1.3.0.1:
    • Damage increased from 10 to 11.
    • Chance of being contained in Water Chests increased from 7/30 (23.33%) to 14/45 (31.11%).
