artikel ini membahas tentang seorang NPC yang dapat ditemukan di awal permainan apabila pemain memiliki 50 SC atau lebih. Untuk NPC yang datang secara tiba-tiba dengan menjual barang acak, lihat Traveling Merchant. Untuk NPC pedagang berwujud Skeleton yang ditemukan di Bawah Tanah, lihat Skeleton Merchant.

The Merchant adalah seorang NPC pedagang yang akan muncul apabila syarat ini telah terpenuhi:

• Tersedia rumah kosong.
• Semua pemain di dalam dunia memiliki total lebih dari 50 SC diantara pemain di inventory mereka. Koin yang tersimpan di Chest dan Penyimpanan item portable contohnya seperti Celengan Babi tidak di anggap memenuhi syarat ini.

pada  Versi Desktop,  Versi Konsol, dan  Versi Mobile, syarat ini hanya berlaku untuk memunculkan Pedagang untuk pertama kali. apabila Pedagang mati, dia akan automatis muncul kembali dalam beberapa waktu kedepan.

Pada  Versi konsol generasi lama dan Versi Nintendo 3DS, apabila Pedagang mati, dia akan muncul kembali apabila syarat diatas terpenuhi lagi.

Pada  Versi Desktop,  Versi Konsol, dan  Versi Mobile, Pedagang akan melempar Throwing Knives pada musuh terdekat untuk melindungi dirinya, dengan damage 12 / 18 / 21 seiring dengan jalannya permainan sebagian stat NPC akan bertambah bersamaan dengan pemain.

Catatan: Semua harga item bisa turun apabila pemain menggunakan Discount Card atau Greedy Ring(Versi Desktop, Konsol dan Mobile). Pada  Versi Desktop,  Versi Konsol, dan  Versi Mobile, harga juga bisa naik atau turun berdasarkan level kebahagiaan NPC.

Ketika ditenggelamkan ke Shimmer, Merchant akan berubah tampilan menjadi bentuk Shimmered-nya. ini tidak berpengaruh terhadap gameplay atau dialogue hanya perubaha visual saja. Dia bisa dibalikkan lagi ke bentuk semula dengan menenggelamkannya ke Shimmer lagi.

Tips

• The Merchant menjual item yang sangat berguna berupa Piggy Bank atau Bug Net yang lumayan sering digunakan sepanjang permainan.
• Percakapan The Merchant's "I feel like an evil presence is watching me." dapat memberitahu apabila syarat untuk memunculkan Eye of Ctulhu secara natural telah terpenuhi.

• Pedagang menjual Furnace di jungle dikarenakan disana tidak ditemukan Stone Block untuk membuat furnace di Not the Bees Seed.
• Pedagang tidak bisa mengucap "Cthulhu" ketika bulan merah adalah referensi dari sebuah fakta bahwa seorang Amerika H. P. Lovecraft, yang membuat Cthulhu, sengaja memberi nama tersebut agar susah untuk di sebutkan. tapi, Pedagang bisa mengucapkan nama tersebut secara lancar di percakapan lainnya ("I hope a scrawny kid like you isn't all that is standing between us and Cthulhu's Eye.")
• Pada saat awal malam, Pedagang kadang mengatakan "Kosh, kapleck Mog. Oh sorry, that's klingon for 'Buy something or die.'", meskipun Buy something or die itu sebenarnya diartikan sebagai vay' Daje'be'chugh vaj bIHegh di Bahasa Klingon. • dia beberapa kali membuat percakapan mereferensikan barang-barang yang tidak ia jual, seperti armor dan payung. Sebagi tambahan, walaupun ia mengaku telah banyak menjualnya di luar negeri, dia tidak memberi harga untuk Blok Tanah.
