The Wither Beast is a Hardmode enemy that spawns during the Old One's Army event. It spawns during Tier 2 during waves 6–7, and Tier 3 during waves 5–7.

When a Wither Beast is within 25 tiles of a player, it will briefly dig its way into the ground for approximately three seconds before burying itself and emitting a 50×50-tile aura of purple crystals, visually similar to the Dryad's Blessing. This aura inflicts the Withered Armor debuff, which halves the player's defense for as long as the player is within the aura's radius, and disappears immediately when the player leaves the zone. While buried, the Wither Beast will also regenerate its health when damaged, healing at a rate of 25 / 50 / 63 (in Tier 2) or 70 / 140 / 178 (in Tier 3) health every second.

It is one of only two enemies from the Old One's Army that requires the usual 50 kills to obtain its corresponding banner, the other being the Etherian Lightning Bug.

Notes

• Having the Broken Armor debuff and the Withered Armor debuff applied at the same time does reduce defense to 0, due to the fact that the two debuffs' defense-reducing capabilities stack multiplicatively, leading to a 75% defense reduction instead of the expected 100%.

Trivia

• The Wither Beast is the only enemy in Terraria capable of healing itself.
• The Wither Beast is very similar in color and stature to the Evolution Beast from the Lunar Events.

• The Bestiary entry for the Wither Beast: "Wither beasts emit a defense-sapping aura from the crystals on their back. While rooted in place, they heal rapidly."
