The Nail Gun attacking Target Dummies.

The Nail Gun is a Hardmode, post-Plantera launcher that consumes Nails as ammunition. Upon enemy hit, a Nail deals 15% damage (17 base damage) and sticks to the enemy before exploding after 1.5 seconds, dealing 135% damage (155 base damage).[1] The explosions do not damage the user, and Nails can stick to blocks and explode in the same manner. Nails are unaffected by gravity until they have traveled roughly 30 tiles, after which they move with an arc similar to that of arrows.

The Nail Gun has a 1/25 (4%) / 49/625 (7.84%) chance of being dropped by Nailheads during the Solar Eclipse event. The Nail Gun is always dropped alongside 100–200 Nails. Additional Nails are also sold by both the Merchant and the Arms Dealer for 1 SC each when the player has the Nail Gun in their inventory.

Its best modifier is Demonic, as it does not have any knockback and thus cannot get modifiers that affect it.

Notes

  • If used in PvP, the Nails will not stick to players and will instead deal normal damage (115 base damage).
  • The Nail explosion covers a 7×7-tile rectangular area centered on the point of impact.[2]
  • If an enemy dies while Nails are still stuck on it, these Nails will pop out in random directions, sticking to other surfaces or enemies and exploding like usual.
  • The Nails stay stuck to enemies even after they teleport or become invulnerable.

Trivia

  • In real life, a nail gun is a type of hammer used to drive nails into a surface by firing it using compressed air, electromagnetism, flammable gas, or explosive charges in some cases.
