“You want apples? You want carrots? You want pineapples? We got torches.
— The Merchant
Torches are furniture items that produce light when placed, held, or dropped (via the Throw key), and are crucial at all stages of gameplay as primary light sources. Torches provide light permanently, and are never extinguished. Regular torches can be found randomly in chests and Pots, as a bonus drop(Desktop, Console, Mobile and 3DS versions) from slimes, or purchased from the Merchant or Skeleton Merchant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) for 50 CC each.
Torches can be placed on the sides or tops of most blocks, on background walls, and on the sides of trees and Wooden Beams. They can also be placed on any type of platform. A placed torch can be retrieved by pressing the ⚷ Open / Activate key on it or by freeing it with a pickaxe or drill. When the block a torch is attached to is broken, the torch will attach itself to any other block or wall directly adjacent to it. If all adjacent blocks surrounding a torch are removed (left, right, and bottom), and no wall exists behind it, it drops like any other item.
Torches are also mechanisms that can be toggled on and off via Wire.
On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, placing at least 101 torches in close proximity below the surface layer in any biome will start the Torch God mini-event. Completing the event will grant the Torch God's Favor, which will allow the player to automatically convert ordinary torches to one of the biome types.
Types
Standard Torch
Standard Torches produce an orange flame, and cannot be placed in liquids. They are crafted with Wood and Gel, but can also be purchased from the Merchant (always) or the Skeleton Merchant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) (during the second half of every in-game minute (real life second)) for 50 CC each. Besides being used to craft various other light sources, they are also used to craft Flaming Arrow, Molotov Cocktails(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions), and the Flaming Mace(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Colored Torch
Purple, Yellow, Blue, Green, Red, White and Orange Torches can be made by combining standard Torches with gems. There are nine available colors, one for each of the seven gem colors, plus the Pink Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) crafted with Pink Gel(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and the Rainbow Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) crafted with Rainbow Brick. With the exception of their colors and light levels, these function identically to a standard Torch. The Rainbow Torch cycles through various colors. The Pink Torch is used to craft the Peace Candle(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and the Rainbow Torch is used to craft the Rainbow Campfire(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Ice Torch
Ice Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Ice Blocks or, in Desktop, Console, and Mobile, with Pink Ice Blocks, Purple Ice Blocks, or Red Ice Blocks. They give off a pale blue light. The Ice Torch has a slightly different graphic to the rest of the colored torches. Besides being used to craft the Frozen Campfire(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and various Frozen(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) and Boreal(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) light sources, they are also used to craft Frostburn Arrows and the Wand of Frosting.
Bone Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Bone Torches are sold by the Skeleton Merchant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) for 1 SC each during the first half of every in-game minute (a real-world second). They are used to craft Bone Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). Bone Torches regularly produce long-lasting sparks which can map out a fair distance below them.
Another way of acquiring Bone Torches is placing and immediately breaking Torches in the Dungeon with the Torch God's Favor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Ultrabright Torch(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
Ultrabright Torches cannot be crafted, but are sometimes sold by the Traveling Merchant(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) for 3 SC each. They shine brighter than normal torches when held. They are used to craft Ultra Bright Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Living Ultrabright Fire Blocks(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Demon Torch
Demon Torches can be taken from the Ruined Houses in the Underworld, where they occur naturally. On Desktop, Console, and Mobile, they can also be crafted by combining standard torches with Obsidian. They function identically to standard, colored and Ice Torches, except that they cycle smoothly between red, purple, and blue flame colors. They are used to craft Demon Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Living Demon Fire Blocks(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Cursed and Ichor Torch
These torches become available in Hardmode, and emit a bright green or yellow light, respectively. They are nearly unique in that they can be held or placed in liquids and still function normally there. They are crafted by combining standard Torches with Cursed Flames (Cursed Torches) or Ichor (Ichor Torches). They are used to craft Cursed Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Ichor Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), respectively.
Desert Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Desert Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Hardened Sand Blocks, Hardened Crimsand Blocks, Hardened Ebonsand Blocks or Hardened Pearlsand Blocks. They are used to craft Desert Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Coral Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Coral Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Coral. The Coral Torch has a slightly different graphic to the rest of the colored torches. They can be placed in Water and still function normally there. They are used to craft Coral Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Corrupt Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Corrupt Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Ebonstone Blocks, Hardened Ebonsand Blocks or Purple Ice Blocks. They are used to craft Corrupt Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Crimson Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Crimson Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Crimstone Blocks, Hardened Crimsand Blocks or Red Ice Blocks. They are used to craft Crimson Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Hallowed Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
These torches become available in Hardmode. Hallowed Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Pearlstone Blocks, Hardened Pearlsand Blocks or Pink Ice Blocks. They are used to craft Hallowed Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Jungle Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Jungle Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Jungle Spores. They are used to craft Jungle Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Mushroom Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Mushroom Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Glowing Mushrooms. They are used to craft Mushroom Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Aether Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Aether Torches are crafted by throwing any non-Aether Torches in the Shimmer. They are used to craft Aether Campfires(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

Notes
- With the exception of the Coral Torch(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Cursed Torch, and Ichor Torch, torches do not function under water. A torch thrown into water will not emit light once it submerges, and if a player enters water with a torch selected in the hotbar, the torch will not be visible and will emit no light. Placed torches are freed when water touches them, and drop as items.
- Holding the Auto Select key with the cursor over empty space will automatically prepare the torches in the player's inventory, allowing for quick placement or easy access to light.
- White Torches appear to produce the most light of any light source in the game.
- Torches provide more light when placed than they do when held or dropped, with the exception of the Ultrabright.
- Torches are the only item where it is possible to throw (via the Throw key) just one of the item. For all other items, the entire stack gets thrown.
- Throwing a torch will cause it to only go a few tiles forwards before falling straight down. For a light source that can be tossed farther, Glowsticks or Flares should be used (though note that Glowsticks are thrown by selecting them and then pressing the ⚒ Use / Attack button, not by pressing Throw).
- Despite appearing dim, Blue Torches can reach a respectable distance with the "Trippy" lighting mode selected, which is extended even farther under the effects of a Night Owl Potion.
- While in Smart Cursor mode, the player can only place torches in dark places.
Trivia
- Orange Torches were apparently added because of a "really persistent nagging brit" in reference to the YouTuber ChippyGaming (James Bennett).[4]
- Torch flame animations continue to play while the game is paused.
- If a block is placed above a torch, the torch will lower. If there is no block above it, the torch gets higher. This can be seen best using a Trap Door and opening/closing it.
- The Torch is the most used ingredient, with 245 recipes needing it, followed by Wood that is needed in 157 recipes.
- In Constant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Worlds, torches and Campfires exposed to the sky will "turn off" during Rain.

. There may be inaccuracies, as the current Desktop version is 1.4.4.9. - ↑ This column represents the color alteration of the torch if it was applied to a completely lit, white tile. Note that this is merely a theoretical attempt at visualizing said color alteration; in-game colors are nearly always much darker and dimmer and less shiny.
