This article is about the enemy. For the summon weapon, see Stardust Cell Staff.

The Star Cell is a Hardmode, post-Lunatic Cultist enemy that spawns in the area of the Stardust Pillar during the Lunar Events. It floats slowly towards the player but can move at a faster rate if the player begins moving away from it.

Upon death, it splits into multiple Mini Star Cells. If these Mini Star Cells are not dealt with, they will grow into a full-sized Star Cell, that can also split into more Mini Star Cells. Mini Star Cells do not contribute to the kill count required to break the Stardust Pillar's shield, though after growing back, they do.

Notes

  • The amount of Mini Star Cells spawned upon death is based on the total number of Star Cells and Mini Star Cells already alive in the world:[1]
# alive # spawned
0–3 4
4-6 3
7-9 2
≥ 10 1

Tips

  • It may be to the player's advantage to leave the Mini Star Cells alive. This allows them to gain banners and demolish the Stardust Pillar's shield faster.
  • Since they tend to appear in clusters, using weapons with a large area of effect allows the player to hit them all at once.
    • The Solar Eruption can kill a Star Cell and all the mini cells it spawns in a single strike.
    • The Vampire Knives are a very effective weapon against Star Cells, hitting multiple copies of the enemy while healing the player for each hit.
    • The Flairon can also be very effective. Due to the fact that it can summon lots of homing bubbles in a short amount of time, it can easily take out the Mini Star Cells that the Star Cell splits into.
    • The Inferno Fork, Nebula Arcanum, and Celebration perform outstandingly well against these enemies. The beam spread attack from the Last Prism also works.
    • The Aerial Bane can be good for taking out the Star Cells as it will kill the cells and then the arrow clusters from the bow will kill the Mini Star Cells.
    • The Life Drain deals a reasonable amount of damage to them at a high rate, can target any number of them at once, and additionally increases the player's health regeneration.
  • As the Stardust Pillar itself spawns Star Cells, staying away from it will greatly reduce their spawn rate.
  • Intentionally leaving mini cells alive and using a room to keep them out, a weapon that fires through walls can easily destroy them, and thus breaking the shield with even more ease.

Trivia

  • The tooltip of the Stardust Cell Staff saying: 'Cultivate the most beautiful cellular infection', hints that Star Cells may be disease-causing somehow.
  • In real life, living cells divide into two identical copies of themselves via mitosis. Each of these copies can then grow and divide again, similar to the Star Cells. However, real cells split normally and are killed completely, while Star Cells only split when the player attacks them.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Star Cell: "A biological single-celled organism that divides and multiplies rapidly with the limitless power of celestial energy."

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Knockback resistance increased from 50% to 70% and are now faster when chasing the player.
    • The Mini Star Cell now has a unique display name and drops its own respective banner.
