King Slime is an optional Pre-Hardmode boss. Due to its low stats and predictable attacks, it is considered the easiest boss in the game by most players.

Spawn Condition

King Slime can be spawned by fulfilling any of these conditions:

  • Rarely in the outer lateral sixths of the map, during daytime, and only on grass, replacing a normal Slime's spawning;
  • At the end of a Natural-occurring Slime Rain.
  • Using Slime CrownSlime Crown.

As with almost all bosses, it despawns if every player involved are dead.

Battle

King Slime is very similar to a normal Slime: it moves by hopping to the player and attempts to make contact, which deals damage. Unlike other Slimes, however, it has a large amount of health, it can teleport, and it's much larger than a standard Slime. This makes King Slime easy to hit, but he jumps far and unpredictably; the height varies depending on the distance between him and the player. Failing to predict his jump destination can result in the player getting damaged.

Getting too far away from King Slime will make it teleport to the player, meaning that the player cannot escape by simply running offscreen. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) However, this can be taken advantage of, as it can get stuck in enclosed spaces.

King Slime becomes smaller and faster the lower his health is, which makes him harder to hit. He will also summon Blue SlimeBlue Slimes as he gets damaged to harass the player. These can draw the player's attention towards the Blue Slimes and waste ammo and time on them instead of King Slime, so the use of piercing weapons or ammo is important.

Old-gen console version Old-gen console and 3DSNintendo 3DS version

The main difference between these versions with Desktop version Desktop, Console version Console, and Mobile version Mobile is that it does not teleport; it can be eternally stuck in small to medium-sized enclosures if it spawns there. Aside from this, it's mostly the same.

Expert mode

There are not many changes to the King Slime itself besides its higher Damage and Health. However, when damaged it will spawn Spiked SlimeSpiked Slimes(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) in addition to regular Blue Slimes. Those can throw volleys of spikes at a short distance, so having a weapon that can pierce multiple targets and attack from a range will be necessary to avoid being bombarded to death.

General Strategies

Terrain Preparation

King Slime is one of the few bosses in the game that lack the ability to go through blocks. This can be exploited as follows:

  • Make one or two platforms above the ground; King Slime will eventually teleport to ground level and the player can easily hit him from the platforms. If he moves to the upper platforms, falling down for a brief time before jumping back up will cause him to fall down as well.

It is possible to exploit the King Slime's large size in Old-gen console version Old-gen console and 3DSNintendo 3DS version versions by making him stuck in-between blocks.

CampfireCampfires are easy to obtain and provide a regeneration boost. Heart LanternHeart Lanterns can also be used, but are much harder to craft. SunflowerSunflower and Bast StatueBast Statue(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) increase movement speed and defense respectively, and should be used if obtained. A Star in a BottleStar in a Bottle greatly increases mana regeneration, which is useful for mages without Mana Regeneration PotionMana Regeneration Potions.

Since King Slime spawns Blue SlimeBlue Slimes, a Blue Slime BannerBlue Slime Banner(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is a good idea to provide offensive and defensive buffs.

Defense: Gearing Up

Armor

Armor is not very important in this fight; however, some suggestions are below.

  • Cactus HelmetCactus Armor is a cheap option, as it is easy to obtain and provides a useful thorns effect (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) dealing damage to any slimes that run into the player. In Expert or Master Mode, better armor is recommended due to King Slime's buffed HP and attack power.
  • Pumpkin HelmetPumpkin Armor is also cheap and more powerful than Cactus armor due to its set bonus. However, it is only available after defeating another boss or during Halloween.
  • For all classes, Silver HelmetSilver Armor or Tungsten HelmetTungsten Armor can increase survivability significantly in Expert or Master Mode. Gold HelmetGold Armor or Platinum HelmetPlatinum Armor are even better but are made from rarer ores.

If the player has difficulty using lower-tier armors, one of these more advanced armors can be obtained:

  • Gladiator HelmetGladiator Armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is extremely powerful for melee users due to its set bonus, but are rare drops from HopliteHoplites(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). Ancient Shadow HelmetAncient Shadow Armor is similarly powerful, but are also very rare drops from Eater of Souls and thus are Corruption only.
  • Fossil HelmetFossil Armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) with a GiGi(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) optimizes for Ranged damage, and is fairly easy to obtain.
  • Wizard HatWizard set or Jungle HatJungle armor is best for Mages.
  • Flinx Fur CoatFlinx Fur Coat(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are good for Summoner paired with any high-defense helmet and leggings, ideally Jungle HatJungle armor.

Weapons

Most weapons can be used to fight this boss without difficulties, except for weak, close-ranged melee weapons like the Umbrella. Piercing weapons may be preferred, to hit both the Blue Slimes and the King Slime himself.

Melee
  • Projectile Swords like the Enchanted SwordEnchanted Sword, Ice BladeIce Blade, Blade of GrassBlade of Grass or StarfuryStarfury should be used if obtained. Basic metal swords are a bad idea due to the amount of Slimes the King will spawn and the high contact damage in higher difficulty levels.
  • The TerragrimTerragrim(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) deals a lot of damage, at the cost of very low range.
  • An Enchanted BoomerangEnchanted or Ice BoomerangIce Boomerang is great at attacking him from a distance. The Flaming MaceFlaming Mace(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Chain KnifeChain Knife are similar options.
  • The The Rotted ForkThe Rotted Fork and Storm SpearStorm Spear(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are both powerful options, especially the latter with its long-ranged projectile attack.
  • MalaiseMalaise(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or ArteryArtery(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are also helpful. If the player is willing to adventure into the Underground Jungle, the AmazonAmazon(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is a great choice.
Ranged
  • A cheap and powerful option is a Bow, such as the Gold BowGold, Platinum BowPlatinum, or even Tendon BowTendon, Demon BowDemon Bow
  • The Blood Rain BowBlood Rain Bow(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is the strongest bow available, however it can be tiresome to obtain.
  • The Snowball CannonSnowball Cannon is another strong ranged weapon.
  • If the player has done some fishing, Frost DaggerfishFrost Daggerfish(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are strong and can pierce.
  • If the player has explored the underground desert, Bone JavelinBone Javelins(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are very effective on the boss itself. Similarly, Bone Throwing KnifeBone Throwing Knives(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are good for clearing the slime minions.
  • All guns are very effective against King Slime, although they are harder to obtain than the other ranged weapons.
Magic
Summoning
  • Summoners should bring either a Vampire Frog StaffVampire Frog Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or a Flinx StaffFlinx Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
  • The Leather WhipLeather Whip(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can be easily purchased and will increase damage significantly.
    • The SnapthornSnapthorn(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is a much more powerful alternative. However, getting it requires Underground Jungle materials.
  • The Slime StaffSlime Staff, although hard to obtain, or a Finch StaffFinch Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are decent choices if there are no other summon weapons available.
  • Due to minion unique immunity frames, it is best to mix minions like so (prioritizing the leftmost minions if only some are available/not enough minion slots):
    • Vampire Frog -> Flinx Staff (x2) -> Slime Staff -> Finch Staff

Accessories

Like weapons, most accessories can help, but accessories obtained in chests are usually enough to defeat King Slime. It is unlikely that players will have access to the Tinkerer's Workshop at this stage of the game, so combined accessories are not listed below.

  • Sailfish BootsSailfish Boots(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Hermes BootsHermes Boots, Flurry BootsFlurry Boots, Dunerider BootsDunerider Boots(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or a Panic NecklacePanic Necklace can assist with avoiding damage or running away in bad situations.
  • If obtained, Fledgling WingsFledgling Wings(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are amazing for extra mobility in the air.
  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) The Flying CarpetFlying Carpet is also a very good accessory since its ability to hover can make the King Slime unable to reach the player.
  • Any double jump accessories such as the Cloud in a BottleCloud in a Bottle greatly increases vertical mobility.
  • A Band of RegenerationBand of Regeneration boosts health regeneration, increasing survivability.
  • While usually not useful in combat, the White StringWhite String(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is cheap enough to craft that it can be crafted over and over again to get a Warding or Menacing Modifier. Similarly, Zombies can be farmed for ShackleShackles with good modifiers.

Potions

Specific Strategies

Platform/Minecart strategy

Create one or two rows of platform about 18-20 blocks off the ground and at least 35-50 blocks long. Walk back and forth along the platform, firing at King Slime. If he or his slimes reach the platform, drop down temporarily and use hooks or double-jumps to return; this will cause King Slime and his minions to drop down as well, following you.

While it takes more work, making a minecart track instead of platforms can give you an even greater speed advantage, and can be useful for further fights in the game. If you can't make a very long track, put bumpers on the end. King Slime will have a hard time trying to teleport to the player because of the speed attained on a Minecart.

Lava Pit Strategy

Because King Slime can be harmed by Lava, a good strategy is to use a Lava BucketLava Bucket to make a long strip of land with a small amount of lava (shallow enough so items don't burn) and then make some widely placed platforms. The player can jump, use Rocket Boots, or employ a Grappling Hook to move between platforms. Just be careful to not jump in the lava if you don't plan to use Obsidian Skin PotionObsidian Skin Potions. This strategy works with his teleports, and the minions will all die from falling in the lava. The player doesn't have to focus on fighting, because the lava will dish out major damage. The player can also skip the platforms and use a Obsidian Skin Potion, and just evade by running under King Slime, or use Rocket BootsRocket Boots to fly over.

Death Box Strategy

In Old-gen console version Old-gen console and 3DSNintendo 3DS version, upon the player's death, the King Slime will attempt to travel off-screen in order to despawn. However, the King Slime cannot travel through solid blocks, so he can easily be trapped in a small area until death.

  • A solid box must be constructed. The box should be large enough to hold the King Slime, yet not so large that he can still wander off-screen.
  • A bed should be placed within the box. In order to make the bed usable, it may be easiest to build a small cubicle within the box to hold the bed.

Before the King Slime spawns, the player should be inside the box with his spawn set on the bed. Once the King Slime awakens, he will teleport within the box to attack the player. The player should deal any damage he can to the King Slime at this time. The King Slime should inevitably kill the player and attempt to hop off screen. However, he will find himself trapped in the box and will not be able to leave. The player will respawn at the bed and is free to deal any additional damage to the King Slime before his next death. Repeat this process until the King Slime is defeated.

Weapons and traps that can deal damage to the King Slime during a player's death will greatly speed up the battle, such as the Crimson RodCrimson Rod, Dart TrapDart Traps, or a thin layer of lava.

Since this strategy revolves around the player's death, hardcore players should avoid implementing this strategy.
