This article is about the miscellaneous tools. For the consumable fishing item obtained during Blood Moons, see Chum Bucket.
A Water Bucket being used to deposit and collect water.

Buckets are tools used to carry water, lava, or honey, allowing them to be removed or placed. With an Empty Bucket, pressing the Use / Attack button on any sufficient body of liquid collects it, which replaces the Empty Bucket with the respective Water Bucket, Lava Bucket, or Honey Bucket. Pressing the Use / Attack button again will deposit the liquid at the location of the cursor, wherein the filled bucket is again replaced with an Empty Bucket. Each bucket holds one tile of liquid. Shimmer cannot be collected with standard buckets.

When an Empty Bucket is dropped as an item into the world while it is raining with the Throw button, and there are no background walls behind the dropped item, it will turn into a Water Bucket after some time has passed. Empty Buckets will not fill under Rain Clouds or Magic Droppers.

The Bottomless Water Bucket, Bottomless Lava Bucket and Bottomless Honey Bucket act as infinite water, lava, and honey placing buckets, whereas the Super Absorbant Sponge, Lava Absorbant Sponge, and Honey Absorbant Sponge are essentially infinite Empty Buckets that accept only water, lava or honey, respectively. They also add and remove liquids at a slightly faster speed than their normal bucket counterparts (especially when moving the cursor around while filling/draining).

Notes

Two buckets (equipped).png Two buckets (equipped) female.png
Two Empty Buckets equipped.
  • When using Empty Buckets on a liquid, the game checks a 3×3-tile square around that tile for more liquid of the same type. If it finds at least half a tile of liquid in that area, each Empty Bucket collects up to a full tile of that liquid. Regardless of whether it collected less than a full tile, an Empty Bucket is always filled completely and is able to pour out a full tile.
  • An Empty Bucket can also be placed in the armor's helmet slot, where it provides +1 defense.
  • Putting an Empty Bucket in the vanity slot and another Empty Bucket in the armor slot will stack the buckets on top of each other. Only two other items can stack this way, Badger's Hat and the Rabbit Perch.

Tips

Using a Bucket to duplicate liquids.
  • Buckets may be utilised when duplicating liquids. When they are placed in a location that causes the liquid to begin flowing, this separates the liquid tile into multiple portions. This combines with the fact that each bucket collected is always full and will place a whole tile of liquid, even when a half tile portion is removed from the world. In other words, a half bucketful portion can be collected which will still place a whole tile and restart the cycle, while the remaining portion accumulates somewhere else. Overall because of this "rounding up" effect more liquid is now present than before. In practice this can be accomplished by either repeatedly using a full bucket on a single tile to place and remove the liquid, or instead splitting the fluid into two separate half tiles and collecting one of them.
    • This is ideally done with one bucket in the inventory, which will switch states immediately as it is used. With a stack of buckets present, the player will have to reselect the appropriate stack of items after each "use" action. Therefore it is best to store extra buckets during the actual duplication process and retrieve them afterwards when all of them can be filled at once.
  • The Empty Bucket "helmet" is of little practical use. While it is much cheaper than a proper Iron Helmet, it is also no more effective than a Wood Helmet, which is far more accessible than the Empty Bucket.
  • While falling, a Water or Honey Bucket can be used as an emergency method to prevent potentially fatal fall damage, although this may require some practice to perform effectively. Water Walking Boots or any of their upgrades prove useful. With protection against lava, e.g. via an Obsidian Skin Potion or Lava Charm (or any of its upgrades), a Lava Bucket can also be used.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.5.0:
    • Honey Buckets can now be crafted from Honey Blocks and Empty Buckets.
    • Empty Buckets left out in the rain will now fill up.
  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Empty Bucket Iron/Lead Bar cost reduced from 3 to 2.
    • Sprites updated. Old sprites were Empty Bucket (pre-1.4.4).png Water Bucket (pre-1.4.4).png Lava Bucket (pre-1.4.4).png Honey Bucket (pre-1.4.4).png.
    • Filled buckets are now used to craft each other via shimmer.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.1:
    • Now displays hair underneath when equipped, changing their equipped appearance from Empty Bucket (equipped) (old).png Two buckets (equipped) (old).png Empty Bucket (equipped) female (old).png Two buckets (equipped) female (old).png to Empty Bucket (equipped).png Two buckets (equipped).png Empty Bucket (equipped) female.png Two buckets (equipped) female.png.
    • Now used to craft the Spider, Lesion, Sandstone, Bamboo, Nebula, Solar, Stardust, and Vortex Sinks.
  • Desktop 1.2.4:
    • Fixed bug where the last bucket of a stack would not go into an available stack when used.
    • Fixed bug where buckets do not stack together by themselves when dropped in the world.
    • Fixed exploit where one could duplicate Empty Buckets on Mannequins.
  • Desktop 1.2.3.1: Fixed an issue where placing an Empty Bucket on a Mannequin would eat it whole.
  • Desktop 1.0.5: Filled buckets may no longer be emptied into solid ground.
  • Desktop 1.0.4: Empty Buckets now offer 1 defense to their wearer.
