Guide:Surviving in the Jungle Temple
The Jungle Temple, also known as the Lihzahrd Temple, is a big structure that is located in the Underground Jungle, with no surface entrance. It can only be accessed after defeating Plantera in the hardmode Underground Jungle, and exploring it is mandatory to progress to the Lunar Events.
The place is usually explored to obtain the materials needed for Solar Tablets(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and to obtain the drops from the boss of the area, the Golem. Even with post-Plantera gear, surviving in the place can be challenging, due to the very strong enemies and the considerably high amount of traps.
Recommended Gear
Armor
- Hallowed has great defensive abilities from its set bonus, and works with all four classes.
- Chlorophyte armor is the best for Melee players. Turtle armor has more defense, but smaller offensive bonuses.
- Shroomite armor is the best choice for Ranged users.
- Spectre armor is the strongest armor available for Mage characters.
- Spooky armor is the best for summoners. Tiki armor is a comparable alternative.
Weapons
For Melee users:
- Terra Blade or Seedler(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are the best Swords available.
- The Eye of Cthulhu(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is the strongest Yoyo.
- Vampire Knives are a good choice because of their high DPS and lifesteal.
- Paladin's Hammer is a strong weapon, especially against crowds.
- Using a Death Sickle is recommended due to it being able to shoot through walls.
- The Scourge of the Corruptor is useful due to the tiny eaters being able to chase enemies.
- Shadowflame Knife(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Light Discs are still decent weapons.
- If used correctly, the Fetid Baghnakhs(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can deal an extreme amount of damage to all enemies.
For Ranged users:
- The Megashark or Sniper Rifle with Crystal Bullets are two of the best guns available.
- The Tactical Shotgun with Chlorophyte Bullets is also a solid choice.
- The Tsunami is the strongest bow available.
- The Chlorophyte Shotbow and the Pulse Bow(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) are also powerful bows to be obtained without defeating other bosses.
- Holy Arrows, Chlorophyte Arrows, and Venom Arrows are excellent arrows to use with diverse abilities. Venom Arrows are the best for the Pulse Bow, as said bow negates any special effects from custom arrows.
- The Dart Rifle(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Pistol(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) with Cursed Darts(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Crystal Darts(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are good for crowds.
- The Nail Gun(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is decent as well.
For Magic users:
- The Nightglow(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Stellar Tune(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Razorblade Typhoon, and Bubble Gun are the best weapons for raiding the temple, capable of easily destroying the crowds. However, they are often difficult to obtain.
- The Inferno Fork is good for both crowds and single targets.
- The Spirit Flame(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Crystal Serpent(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are still solid weapons.
- The Shadowbeam Staff and Magical Harp make full use of their bouncing, piercing projectiles due to the enclosed nature of the Temple.
- Several secondary items can massively help with the horde of enemies in the Jungle Temple:
- The Magnet Sphere synergies well with most other weapons.
- Using Rainbow Gun can easily lock down tight hallways with its lingering projectile.
- Using a Nimbus Rod to cover a vertical drop from layer to layer allows for a good crowd control of enemies.
- A Clinger Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can keep almost all enemies at bay with its wall of Cursed Flames, however, the Lihzahrds' second phase can sometimes push through it with its speed.
- A Golden Shower helps applying Ichor to enemies, making other weapons more effective against them.
For Summoners:
- The Raven Staff are the best for crowd control, while the Desert Tiger Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is better for single targets.
- The Sanguine Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and the Blade Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are still decent, despite being obtained much earlier in the game. The latter may need specialized optimizations, though.
- The Tempest Staff is great against the slower enemies in the temple.
- In terms of whips, the best few are the Dark Harvest(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Morning Star(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Kaleidoscope(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). The Morning Star and even a Durendal(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) might be preferred due to the difficulty of obtaining the others.
- The Firecracker(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) specially synergizes with the Desert Tiger Staff.
- The Staff of the Frost Hydra or any of the Tavernkeep's Sentries are also good to have.
Accessories
- Wings are almost mandatory at this point.
- Mobility accessories such as the Shield of Cthulhu(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Tabi are always good. The Master Ninja Gear is a helpful upgrade of the Tabi.
- Good damage increasing accessories include:
- The Class Emblems
- The Fire Gauntlet (In Nintendo version, the Mechanical Gloves) for melee users
- The Stalker's Quiver(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Molten Quiver(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Magic Quiver for bows, the Sniper Scope and Recon Scope(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) for firearms
- The Celestial Emblem(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) for mages
- The Papyrus Scarab and Necromantic Scroll for summoners
- An upgrade of the Mana Flower, such as the Magnet Flower(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or the Mana Cloak(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is very helpful for sustained usage of magic weapons.
- The Magic Cuffs or Celestial Cuffs(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) are pretty good for quickly regaining mana as a mage.
- The Frozen Shield(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) greatly increases survivability and grants knockback resistance. The Charm of Myths also increases survivability by allowing quicker healing.
Potions
- Hunter Potion is useful for detecting enemies in the next room or layers.
- A Dangersense Potion(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) is extremely useful as it will highlight the traps all over the temple.
- Any items that grant Exquisitely Stuffed(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is useful in most situations, including in the Jungle Temple.
Other
- A Grappling Hook is useful to stand out of the Lihzahrds' reach.
- Having an abundance of lightings is greatly recommended for exploring the temple.
- It's also good to use the bonuses of a Sharpening Station(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Ammo Box(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions), Crystal Ball, War Table(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Bewitching Table(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), depending on class.
- A Slice of Cake(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) grants a general mobility buff, which is useful for all classes.
Exploration
There are two main enemies in the Jungle Temple:
- Lihzahrds have two forms: they'll first walk on two legs, and then when they get to half Health, they'll become quadrupeds, becoming much faster and immune to knockback. Lihzahrds do about 40 (80) damage in their first form, and about 60 (120) in their second.
- Flying Snakes possess the ability to fly and do considerably higher damage, however they are significantly more vulnerable to knockback and have less health.
- Additionally, Mimics occasionally spawns in the Jungle Temple. All Golden Chests in the temple are to be treated as such.
The enemies are not the only threat found, the Jungle Temple is notorious for its large amount of Traps, such as:
- Super Dart Traps, which will launch high-speed poisonous darts;
- Flame Traps, which will deal very large amounts of damage with a short range;
- Spiky Ball Traps, which drops spiky balls that bounce and linger around for a long time;
- Spear Traps, that jab you from above with high-speed spears;
- Wooden Spikes, which will deal damage to you when touched.
One should move slowly and carefully, and pay attention to the floor. If you can't seem to spot pressure plates very well, you can stick to traversing across the ceiling or you can hold (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Wire Cutter to enable you to see the wires leading to some of the traps. Cutting them will disable the traps and allow you to pass safely. (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Additionally, traps can also be mined with a Pickaxe. Explosives can also be used to easily remove Wooden Spikes.
At the end of the Temple lies a wide, expansive area where a single Lihzahrd Altar can be found. The Lihzahrd Power Cells found in chests and dropped by local enemies can be used to activate it and summon the boss of the area, the Golem.
