The Storm Spear being used on Target Dummies.
The Storm Spear is a pre-Hardmode spear that fires a Storm Spear Shot when thrust, a small, non-piercing bolt of electricity that deals 150% of the spear's damage (21 base damage) and inflicts half its knockback (base knockback of 3 (Very weak)).[1] The Storm Spear can be found in Sandstone Chests in the lower 3/7ths of the Underground Desert and in Oasis Crates and Mirage Crates obtained from fishing in the Oasis.
Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.
Tips
- Due to its high attack rate when direct contact is made with the spear, it proves to be quite an effective early-game weapon.
- It is also one of the first projectile melee weapons one can get access to, on par with the Ice Blade.
- Being able to attack in any direction and extending into walls makes it an effective weapon against Tomb Crawlers and Man Eaters.
- The Storm Spear Shot projectile gives it a greater reach than other early-game spears, making it especially useful in Master Mode where keeping a distance from enemies and early bosses like the Eye of Cthulhu and King Slime is more important due to increased contact damage. It can also light up spaces through walls.
- When standing close a one-tile thick wall, the Storm Spear Shot can sometimes be shot through the wall.
- The more melee speed a player has, the further distance they can shoot through walls, even being able to reach up to 3-block thick walls with enough melee speed.
- In Don't dig up worlds, the Storm Spear can be obtained from the lower Chests that spawn below the Underground Desert walls with much less risk.
- If a Sandstone Chest contains a Thunder Zapper or Bast Statue as its primary item, the player is low enough to obtain the Storm Spear. Otherwise, they need to dig lower before they have a chance of finding one.
Trivia
- It bears an obvious resemblance to the Thunder Zapper, a pre-Hardmode magic weapon which can also be found in Sandstone Chests in the Underground Desert.
