A Fallen Log in a Forest.

Fallen Logs are naturally-generated background objects that appear on the Surface in Forest biomes. At night, fairies will occasionally spawn at a Fallen Log. Fairies can also spawn underground, but only as long as there is at least one Fallen Log is present at the surface layer in the world (see exact area below). Thus, destroying all Fallen Logs in a world will permanently stop Fairies from spawning naturally, and shaking Hallowed trees will be the only way to obtain them.

Unlike most background items, Fallen Logs can only be destroyed with an axe. They will be destroyed when the grass beneath them is converted to Corrupt grass or Crimson grass, but Hallowed grass conversion does not destroy them. They drop 10–20 Wood upon destruction. The blocks beneath them cannot be mined until the log is destroyed, similarly to trees.

Notes

  • The game will scan a set area for Fallen Logs. As long as at least one Fallen Log is located in this area, fairies can spawn naturally. The exact borders of the area are listed below:[1]
    • In normal worlds, the horizontal borders of the area is 100 tiles from both sides of world. The vertical borders of the area is 10 tiles below the Surface layer (i.e. 10 tiles below the border between Surface and Underground layers), to 100 tiles below the top edge of the world.
    • In Don't dig up worlds, the horizontal borders of the area remain the same, while the vertical borders of the area changed to 350 tiles above the bottom of the world, to the border between Underground and Cavern layers.
  • Normally, all naturally spawned Fallen Logs should be located in said area.
