The Portal Gun Station is a Hardmode, post-Moon Lord furniture item and mechanism that can fire portals, similar to the Portal Gun. The Portal Gun Station can be purchased from the Cyborg for 10 GC if the player has a Portal Gun in their inventory.

Once placed, pressing Open / Activate key on different spots on the Portal Gun Station triggers different effects: pressing at the top toggles between orange and blue portal colors; pressing at the base fires a portal; pressing at the left or right side rotates its shooting direction. There are 9 possible orientations and it cannot fire downward, each rotation tilts it by one step (22.5°).

Green wire: Aim right
Blue wire: Toggle color
Yellow wire: Fire portal

The Portal Gun Station can also be triggered by wire. Depending on where the wire is connected, it will either change portal color, shoot portal (with a cooldown of 0.5 seconds[1]), or rotate toward the side the wire is on.

In multiplayer, if the source of activation is not directly a player, then the Portal Gun Station will not fire nor swap colors, though any signal can rotate it. For example, flipping a Switch that fires a Dart Trap at a Teal Pressure Pad connected to the Station will not result in the Station firing, as it cannot find a player to bind its portals to. Note that other, player-based projectiles like arrows or minions will cause the Teal Pressure Pad to activate the Station. Timers and Sensors (except Player Above Sensors) also cannot fire the Station.

Only a pair of portals can exist at a time for each player that has the Portal Gun or Portal Gun Station, whether created by the former or the latter. Portal shots have a maximum range of 673 tiles.

Notes

  • Activating the Station with a Player Above Sensor in multiplayer will shoot portals, but will instead shoot green portals that do not disappear when a player gets too far away.

Tips

  • Portal Gun Stations can be useful for adventure maps, as they can create portals for players.
  • It remains functional while the player is under the Creative Shock debuff, meaning it can be used in the Old One's Army event.
  • Painting a Portal Gun Station will not affect the colors of the portal it shoots.

Trivia

  • The Portal Gun Station is a direct reference to the 2007 puzzle-platforming game Portal, and the way the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device is first obtained. The device is initially placed in a stand that periodically rotates and shoots a portal.
