Chests
“I hear there's a secret treasure... oh never mind.
—
The Merchant
Chests are a type of furniture functioning as storage items. They are accessed using ⚷ Open / Activate and can store up to 40 item stacks in rows of
10×4 /
8×5. In addition to being craftable, a number of Chests are placed in random locations during world generation. The loot contained in these Chests is determined during world generation, and will not change if the world enters Hardmode.
Chests cannot be broken with items inside (the blocks a filled Chest is placed on would also have this trait). However, the Block Swap feature allows the player to change the type of a Chest without having to destroy it. Some types of Chests can be locked by the player using a Chest Lock. When doing so, they will require a key to open again.
When a chest receives a signal from Wire, it will attempt to pick up dropped items within a 12×12-tile rectangle centered on the chest. Upon successfully picking up an item, an animation of the item flying into the chest will be played, and items in that chest will be sorted (as if the Sort Items function is used on it).[1]
There are 22 varieties of naturally-occurring Chests (6 of which cannot be crafted), 48 craftable ones and 1 purchasable Chest, plus the Barrel and Trash Can, for a total of 55 Chest types and 57 placed storage items overall (besides Dressers and portable storage items).

Note:
- A Chest can only contain one type of bar, and only the types of which the ore is generated naturally in the world.
- The column Chance is the probability of the items to be contained in the chest. The quantity of some specific items is not uniformly distributed.
- Secondary items are generated in the order shown in the table, so their relative order in the chest is the same as in the table above.
Underground loot
This content is transcluded from Gold Chest § Loot. The loot for any given chest is determined by the location in which it is found. Each chest contains a single primary item and an assortment of randomly chosen common items. The primary item is first placed in the chest, then each "set" of common items is checked to see whether or not it will be added. If a set is chosen to be added, a single item from the list is added to the chest.
Sets are displayed in the list below divided by horizontal borders. For example, the Wooden Arrow and the Shuriken both reside in the same set, so they will never both appear in the same chest.

Cavern
- Gold Chests that are generated within 250 tiles of the bottom of the world contain the same common items as Shadow Chests.
- The Lava Charm can only be found in Gold Chests that are in the "lava layer", i.e. the lower parts of the Caverns where lava pools appear.
- This condition affects the rest of the loot pool, slightly reducing the chances of the other items.
