The Enchanted Sundial skipping a day. Note the clouds and sun speeding across the top of the screen.

The Enchanted Sundial is a Hardmode furniture item that can be placed. It can be triggered by the Open / Activate key or wires, doing so will advance time to sunrise (4:30 AM) the following day. It has a 7-day cooldown period, so once used, it will not be usable again until 7 in-game days have passed (see Notes for details). When the Enchanted Sundial is ready to be used, the dial at the top of its sprite and the sun in the middle will both glow bright yellow. The Enchanted Sundial is obtained from fished Pearlwood (1/200 (0.5%) chance), Mythril (1/60 (1.67%) chance), and Titanium Crates (1/20 (5%) chance).

The Enchanted Sundial does not turn the time to the next day immediately. It instead "fast-forwards" time, causing it to pass 60 times faster than usual (1 hour of in-game time, which would usually take 1 minute of real-life time, takes only 1 second while the Enchanted Sundial is active). When the Enchanted Sundial is taking effect, the effect of other time-accelerating methods (bed and Journey Mode Time Menu) will be ignored. However, unlike these methods, the Enchanted Sundial does not increase tile update rate in world, meaning that things like plant growth and biome spread is unaffected when it is active.[1]

The Enchanted Moondial is its night counterpart, allowing the player to advance time to dusk (7:30 PM) of the current or following day.

Notes

  • Technically, the Enchanted Sundial's cooldown is set to 8 days right after activation, and is reduced by 1 day at 4:30 AM each day.[2] This means that:
    • Since the Enchanted Sundial accelerates time to 4:30 AM the following day, this cooldown is reduced to 7 days after its effect ends.
    • The cooldown can be sped up by time-accelerating methods.
Additionally:
  • The cooldown will be instantly reset if a Blood Moon or Solar Eclipse occurs naturally.
  • The Enchanted Sundial's 7-day cooldown is shared between all Enchanted Sundials in the current world, so a second Enchanted Sundial cannot be used to circumvent it.
  • The Enchanted Sundial's cooldown timer is separate from the Enchanted Moondial's cooldown timer, so using one does not affect the other.
  • In multiplayer, the Enchanted Sundial will only count a cooldown day passing if there are players online at 4:30 AM.
  • Since the Enchanted Sundial accelerates the time, the following time-dependent things are also affected:
  • The following things will not happen during Enchanted Sundial's time acceleration:[3]
  • The glowing effect when the Enchanted Sundial is ready to be used gives off faint yellow light, but it does not count as a light source for housing.
  • The Enchanted Sundial and Enchanted Moondial ends the time acceleration effect after reaching dawn (4:30 AM) and dusk (7:30 PM), respectively. With this in mind, one can know how the time will be advanced if these items are both activated. For example:
    • Activate both at 11:00 AM, time will be advanced to 4:30 AM the following day.
    • Activate both at 11:00 PM, time will be advanced to 7:30 PM the following day.
    • Activate Enchanted Sundial at 11:00 AM, then activate Enchanted Moondial after 7:30 PM (9:30 PM for exmaple), time will be advanced to 7:30 PM the following day.

Tips

Trivia

  • The Enchanted Sundial shares its color palette and architectural theme with much of the Skyware furniture set, though there is no direct correlation between the two.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.0.4: Fixed an issue where Enchanted Sundial would cause heavy FPS drops.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.3: Fixed a bug where speeding time up with an Enchanted Sundial would make some unusual visual effects.
