The Rod of Discord is a Hardmode tool that instantly teleports the player to the mouse cursor. Using the Rod of Discord costs no mana or ammunition; however, each use inflicts the Chaos State debuff on the player for (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 6 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 9 seconds. Using the Rod while this debuff is active causes the player to lose health equal to (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/7 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/6 of their maximum health. On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, the Rod of Discord's teleport range is limited to 960 pixels (60 tiles) horizontally and 600 pixels (37.5 tiles) vertically from the player's center. The Rod of Discord has a 1/500 (0.2%) / 1/400 (0.25%) chance of being dropped by Chaos Elementals.
It can be upgraded into the Rod of Harmony(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) by throwing it into Shimmer after the Moon Lord has been defeated.

Notes
- The target location must be at least 3 tiles high and 2 tiles wide. Pressing the ⚒ Use / Attack button will always place the player's feet at the cursor position. Thus, in order to teleport into a 3-tile-high opening, the player must aim at the floor. Unsuccessful teleports play the same sound, but do not inflict the debuff.
- While riding a mount, the target location must usually be higher, depending on the mount's height. For instance, while riding the Unicorn Mount, the location must be 5 tiles high.
- The Rod of Discord will not teleport the player before Plantera is defeated if the background wall at cursor location is an unsafe Lihzahrd Brick Wall, and the cursor location is lower than surface. In Don't dig up(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Get fixed boi(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, this effect is always applied, regardless of depth.[1] This effectively prevents the player from entering the Jungle Temple pre-Plantera.
- While teleporting cancels fall damage, it does not reset the wing flight timer.
- Despite causing no damage to enemies, the Rod of Discord can be placed on a Weapon Rack.
- Using the Rod of Discord when moving maintains the player's movement speed.
- Using it does not cancel the Shroomite armor's stealth.
- If the player simply taps the ⚒ Use / Attack button with the Rod of Discord on the Mobile version, they will be teleported slightly right of the spot where they were standing (and above if blocks are in the way or furniture is to the right). Using the thumbpad can see mixed results if the aim mode is set to "Aim & Use" rather than "Aim Only".
- The damage incurred by Chaos State cannot be dodged with a Black Belt/Master Ninja Gear, Holy Protection or Brain of Confusion(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
- It bypasses and does not trigger invincibility frames.
- It is always negated in Godmode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), like all other damage.
- In Celebrationmk10(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, the drop rate of the Rod of Discord is increased to 1/100 (1%).
Tips
- If this item is used correctly, it has the potential to become one of the best items for maneuvering the map. For instance, it is very useful for capturing Truffle Worms because they can be caught almost immediately upon materializing. It is also useful for maintaining high movement speed, e.g. on fast mounts, by surpassing obstacles that would otherwise require slowing down.
- This item is valuable for dodging high-damage attacks, such as the Moon Lord's(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Phantasmal Deathray, contact damage from the Dungeon Guardian, or the Empress of Light's(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Ethereal Lance, Everlasting Rainbow, and Prismatic Bolts during her daytime "enraged" state.
- While it is one of the rarest items in the game, it can be obtained immediately after the start of Hardmode without requiring defeating any additional bosses.
- Since this item is one of the few ways to deal self-damage on command, it can be used with the Shrimpy Truffle or the Panic Necklace to activate the speed boost. Furthermore, it allows easily getting the Frequent Flyer achievement.
- (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Using other items to increase the player's view, then quickly switching to the Rod of Discord and using it, allows teleporting larger distances. This can be done by using items like the Binoculars, Rifle Scope, or any of its upgrades.
Trivia
- Dying from teleporting during the Chaos State will display unique death messages:
- "<Player name> didn't materialize"
- "<Player name>'s legs appeared where their head should be."
- On the Old-gen console version and Nintendo version, this is the only death message that changes based on the character's gender. The game uses the pronouns "his" and "her".
- On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, there are still separate death messages but they are exactly the same.
- The Chaos State debuff was introduced to combat the problem of being able to use the Rod of Discord repeatedly, which would grant the user an arguably overpowered method of transportation or evasion.
- On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, however, this can be remedied post-Moon Lord by using the Rod of Harmony.
- The abbreviation of the Rod of Discord, RoD, is the same as the first word, rod.
- This is one of the only ways in the game the player can have negative health. Verify
- In earlier mobile versions, using the Rod of Discord would instantly kill its user, and the death message would read "Structures".
