The Rod of Discord is a Hardmode tool that has a 1/500 (0.2%) / 1/400 (0.25%) chance of being dropped by Chaos Elementals. When used, it instantly teleports the player to the location of the cursor, and inflicts the Chaos State debuff on the player for 6 seconds. Using the Rod of Discord while this debuff is active causes the player to lose health equal to 1/7 (14.29%) of their maximum health.

It can be upgraded into the Rod of Harmony by throwing it into Shimmer after the Moon Lord has been defeated.

Notes

  • In Celebrationmk10 and Get fixed boi worlds, the drop rate of the Rod of Discord is increased to 1/100 (1%) regardless of world difficulty.
  • The Rod of Discord cannot be used to teleport into the Jungle Temple prior to defeating Plantera.
  • The health loss inflicted by Chaos State cannot be reduced in any way or negated through dodge effects. It also bypasses and does not trigger invincibility frames. It does not bypass invincibility from Godmode, however.
  • The Rod of Discord's teleport range is limited to 60 tiles horizontally and 37.5 tiles vertically from the player's center.
  • The target location must be at least 3 tiles high and 2 tiles wide. Pressing the ⚒ Use / Attack button will always place the player's feet at the cursor position. Thus, in order to teleport into a 3-tile-high opening, the player must aim at the floor. Unsuccessful teleports play the same sound, but do not inflict the debuff.
    • While riding a mount, the target location must usually be higher, depending on the mount's height. For instance, while riding the Unicorn Mount, the location must be 5 tiles high.
  • Teleporting resets fall damage to begin at the height at which the player teleported to.
  • Using the Rod of Discord when moving maintains the player's momentum.
  • Using it does not cancel Shroomite armor's stealth.
  • If the player only taps the ⚒ Use / Attack button with the Rod of Discord on the Mobile version Mobile version, they will be teleported slightly to the right (and above if blocks or furniture are obstructing the path). Using the thumbpad can yield mixed results if the aim mode is set to "Aim & Use" rather than "Aim Only".

Tips

  • The Rod of Discord is arguably the most powerful movement tool in the game; besides being an obvious boon to traversing terrain, it allows the player to dodge high-damage or difficult to avoid attacks, including the Moon Lord's Phantasmal Deathray, contact damage from the Dungeon Guardian, and several of the Empress of Light's attacks. It is also very useful in helping to catch Truffle Worms.
  • While it is one of the rarest items in the game, it can be obtained immediately after the start of Hardmode.
  • Since this item is one of the few ways to deal self-damage on command, it can be used with the Shrimpy Truffle or the Panic Necklace to activate the speed boost. Furthermore, it allows easy obtainment of the The Frequent Flyer achievement.

Trivia

  • Dying from teleporting during the Chaos State will display unique death messages:
    • "<Player name> didn't materialize"
    • "<Player name>'s legs appeared where their head should be."
  • The abbreviation of the Rod of Discord, RoD, is the same as the first word, rod.
  • In earlier mobile versions, using the Rod of Discord would instantly kill its user, and the death message would read "Structures".
  • Despite not being a weapon, the Rod of Discord can be placed on a Weapon Rack.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.1: Teleport range is now limited to 960 pixels (60 tiles) horizontally and 600 pixels (37.5 tiles) vertically from the player's center.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.1:
    • Now has an increased drop rate of 1/400 (0.25%) in Expert Mode.
    • Now leaves a trail when teleporting.
  • Desktop 1.3.0.4: Teleporting now quickly shifts the viewpoint instead of instantly setting it to the destination point.
  • Desktop 1.3.0.1: Chaos State damage reduced from one sixth to one seventh of user's total health, and duration decreased from 8 to 6 seconds.
  • Desktop 1.2.3:
    • Chaos State damage reduced from one fifth to one sixth of user's total health, and duration decreased from 10 to 8 seconds.
    • Now works properly in reverse gravity.
    • Using a Rod of Discord releases all hooks.
  • Desktop 1.2.1.2:
    • Inflicts Chaos State upon use to deter teleport spamming.
    • Can no longer be used to enter a Jungle Temple (unless the Lihzahrd Walls at target location are removed).
    • Using Rod of Discord near the edge of world will no longer cause the game to crash.
