Axes

For other tools that can cut down trees and cacti, see Chainsaws and Hamaxes.

Axes are tools used to remove trees and cacti, including their variants. They also double as basic melee weapons, and certain axes additionally function as pickaxes or hammers (known as hamaxes). Some of the higher-tier axes have chainsaw counterparts, which cut faster than their axe counterparts but have lower range. Newly created characters spawn with a Copper Axe; in Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) with an Iron Axe instead.

When evaluating the practical efficiency of an axe, two stats should be taken into consideration: Axe power and chopping speed. Higher axe power causes an axe to deal more "damage" to trees and cacti per hit, and lower chopping speed values mean that the axe hits trees and cacti more frequently. The use time attribute can safely be disregarded, because it reflects the weapon swing/animation and is not related to the hits for cutting.

The best modifier is Light for pre-Hardmode axes and Legendary for Hardmode axes. Exceptions are the Meteor Hamaxe, which has the same speed with the Legendary modifier as with the Light modifier, and the Shroomite Digging Claw, which will cut down faster when reforged to Light.

Types

There are 31 different types of axes, 17 of which are Hardmode-exclusive.

Axe power

Axe power dictates how many hits it takes for an axe or chainsaw to destroy a tree or cactus.[1]

All tree and cactus tiles have 100 hit points each. A tree or cactus tile is destroyed (along with the rest of the plant that is above it) when its hit points are reduced to 0 or below. Hitting a tree or cactus tile with an axe or chainsaw reduces its hit points as follows:

  • For trees: Axe power multiplied by 24, rounded down.
  • For cacti: Axe power multiplied by 72, rounded down.
  • In For the worthy and Get fixed boi worlds, the amount of damage dealt to both trees and cacti is further multiplied by 1.3 and then rounded down again.

Examples:

Chop down a tree. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Category: Collector Collector

Tips

  • Axes can be reforged to increase speed of cutting down trees, while chainsaws cannot.

History

  • Desktop 1.2: Axes no longer destroy placed wood blocks, as pickaxes do now. Waraxes added as an alternative option to chainsaws for hardmode ores
