Planter Boxes are special gardening objects purchased from the Dryad for 1 SC each in which herb or flower seeds can be planted. If left empty, wild grass plants will randomly grow out of them, provided the box is placed on the surface or in Space.[1] The plant in a Planter Box cannot be cut in the regular manner, e.g. via nearby swinging tools. Instead, it needs to be removed with a pickaxe or drill, or the Staff of Regrowth or Axe of Regrowth.

Planter Boxes are placed and act like platforms: They do not require support beneath them and they can be walked on, but pressing ▼ Down will let a player fall through them.

Although the various Planter Boxes have different seed names and appearances, the differences are purely cosmetic: Any herb seeds can grow in any Planter Box, and planting seeds in their respective Planter Boxes will not provide any extra benefit. Depending on the evil biome of the world, the Dryad will sell a Deathweed Planter Box showing either Corrupt grass or Crimson grass.

Notes

  • Planter Boxes have a similar function to Clay Pots and placed Rock Golem Heads. However, herb seeds cannot be planted in Rock Golem Heads.
  • When using a Staff of Regrowth or Axe of Regrowth on a herb in a Planter Box, the herb cannot be harvested unless it is blooming. It can still be harvested at any time by using a pickaxe or drill.
  • Torches can be placed directly on top of a Planter Box.
  • Tombstones can land on Planter Boxes if there is an open space of 2×2 tiles. This will break any plants occupying that space.

Tips

  • Although Planter Boxes act like platforms, they cannot be hammered into stairs or placed diagonally using Smart Cursor. When placed using Smart Cursor, they will always be placed in a straight horizontal line. This may prove useful if placing normal platforms becomes difficult due to random bumps and dips.
  • Lava can pass through Planter Boxes without destroying them, making them useful in Wall of Flesh arenas in Expert Mode as Lava Slimes spawn lava when killed in Expert Mode.

Trivia

  • The Corrupt and Crimson Deathweed Planter Boxes is one of the three pairs of items that share the same name. The other pairs of items are: the Princess Dress from Goodie Bags and the Princess Dress from the Clothier; the Seaweed junk and the Seaweed pet-summoning item.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.5.0:
    • All Planter Boxes are now sold at any time, regardless of game progression. Previously, the Dryad would only sell the Daybloom Planter Box after King Slime was defeated, the Blinkroot Planter Box after the Eye of Cthulhu was defeated, the Deathweed Planter Box after the Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu was defeated, the Moonglow Planter Box after Queen Bee was defeated, the Waterleaf and Shiverthorn Planter Boxes after Skeletron was defeated, and the Fireblossom Planter Box after the Wall of Flesh was defeated.
    • Improved tooltip.
  • Desktop 1.4.1.2: Skeletron Prime's bombs will now explode on contact with Planter Boxes.
